Not really a rumor, but I noticed that the top 4 defensemen in scoring are all righties. Also, 6 out of the top 10 are RH which is weird considering that 2/3 of the league are lefties. Anyone have any idea why this might be?

Guess Woo was "Jett-ed" from the first round. I think I was on to something. The only guy listed in the top 10 I am not crazy about is Wahlstrom. I would pick Kupari before him. Other than that, I can honestly say that I would be happy with any of those other guys listed in the top 10. Holland can't really mess it up this year.

    Wings Interested In Resigning Green

I think some of you guys are lowballing Green on his next contract. Just to do some comparables, I picked out 5 guys currently under contract who are near Green's point totals and age. Mike Green: 29 points, age 32, 6.0 AAV Alex Goligoski: 30 points, age 32, $5.475 mil AAV Marc-Edouard Vlasic: 29 points, age 30, $4.25 AAV Justin Braun: 27 points. age 30, $3.8 mil AAV Jeff Petry: 31 points, age 30, $5.5 mil AAV Duncan Keith: 28 points, age 34, $5.538 AAV Average AAV among the 5 players I listed is $4.91 mil. Considering all of them signed their contracts before last season, and with the overpayment last summer of dmen, I wouldn't be surprised to see Green get a fair 3 year deal at $5 mil AAV. He'll be 35 when the contract is up, and probably still one of our best defenseman.

Mrazek traded to Philly for Conditional 3rd and 4th Picks

I agree with you that an 82 game schedule seems too long, but I don't think shortening the season would have the intended consequences. First: Neither the owners, nor the players would agree to it. The owners wouldn't because you're cutting out 25% of their ticket sales, and 25% of their advertising revenue and 25% of their tv contractual agreements. The players would oppose it because their salaries would have to go down to compensate for it. Second: If the number of games drops by a 1/4, the ticket prices will actually go up to compensate for the lost revenue. Third: You would only be able to see star players on teams in the other conference at your team's home games every other year at best. That would also hurt ticket sales. People actually buy tickets to see guys like Crosby and McDavid come to town. https://www.statista.com/statistics/261588/average-ticket-price-major-us-sports-leagues/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_attendance_figures_at_domestic_professional_sports_leagues The average ticket price in the NHL was roughly $62 in 2015. It was $93 for the NFL, $56 for the NBA, and $31 for MLB. The reason that MLB has the lowest ticket prices despite having the highest salary cap is because they have the double the number of games of the NHL and double the seating capacity. So basically quadruple the number of ticket sales. The NFL has the fewest number of games, but almost 4 times the seating capacity for one game. Where was I going with this? Oh, yeah. The NHL already has the 2nd highest ticket prices among the 4 major leagues. That's because they have the fewest opportunities to sell tickets based on number of seats and number of games. They also get the least amount of revenue from advertisers and tv contracts. This makes the prices what they already are. If you do anything to lessen that revenue then payroll gets cut (have fun with a lower salary cap Ken), and ticket prices go up. Season ticket prices don't go down, and fewer people go to see games resulting in even less revenue. Not good. If there was a way to shorten the season while avoiding any of those problems, I think it would be a welcomed change. "Happy Days" theme song playing in my head.

True, but I think Thornton re-signs. With Couture and Pavelski already on the team, where would Tavares fit in? I suspect that was the reason that they let Marleau go last year.

I don't know the cap situations for all the teams, but I would imagine that the only teams that could afford him are probably not contenders. That actually increases the odds for the Wings to sign him.

Some good news for Holland haters

Loyalty is a trait. You either have it or you don't. Holland seems to have it and it shows in some of his business dealings. Some GMs don't have it at all. It's all business to them. When he uses it or who he shows it to is debatable. It's based on one's judgment. You can't just say that when he trades a player you like or he takes a guy you like to arbitration that he is being disloyal. You also can't say that he's being too loyal whenever he re-signs someone you don't like to terms that you don't like. Those are not facts, they are opinions. That was kinda my point. There are some in here that do that. I personally do not believe that trading Mrazek was disloyal. I don't think taking AA to arbitration was disloyal. I don't think keeping Howard results from any kind of "loyalty". It was business. Any perceived "loyalty" that KH shows is to players who have shown commitment and loyalty to the team, which makes sense. Those guys are usually veterans. Guys on entry level deals haven't proven anything yet. When they put in their time, they'll probably get the loyalty treatment too. That's kinda how it works. Loyalty is like respect, its not given, its earned. Does he seem to show it moreso to veterans? Yes, but those are the guys who are the free agents. Those are exactly the guys you want to see Holland as loyal, particularly to guys who have put in their dues. Here's an analogy: I have 2 guys that work for me. One has been with me a long time. I hired him, trained him, and paid him well. He has a good work ethic, is reliable, and has experience and other intangibles that I value. He could work somewhere else doing the same job for the same money or more. Then I would lose all that I have invested in him. Instead, he chooses to work for me. The 2nd guy is much younger and has been with me only a short time. He shows good qualities, which is why I hired him. He is being trained, but I have invested much less in him. He works for me because he has no other options, and may leave when he has the chance. Which guy do you think I will be more loyal to? I would rather Holland be seen as too "loyal" than not. That perception will only increase the interest of players for this team, especially the older players who are free agents. His perceived "loyalty" may hurt the team at times, for sure. But I think it would hurt the team more if players saw Holland as being without loyalty, a suit who would throw his own Mother under the bus. I'll take the occasional overpayment if it means giving us a better chance at landing a player who can make a difference.

Green is not below average. Indications are he wants to stay. If that's so then he's probably willing to sign a more than fair contract. That would mean he's not overpaid either.

7 or 8 year deals are for guys at the elite level. Larkin isnt. Even if he was signed to that kind of deal, you would have to pay a steep price initially in order to get value later on. I don't know if I am comfortable yet with signing him to that kind of contract. I wouldn't go more than 5 years.

I am not that high on Woo. If he doesn't do anything particularly well now, whats he going to do at the NHL level. I would rather draft a guy who has good skills in at least one part of his game who you can develop into a more rounded player.

This is what I've been saying, and exactly the reason why I was having doubts about him being traded.

Its a push at this point. If Green re-signs, no harm, no foul. If Green isn't resigned , than its a failure IMO.

Mrazek traded to Philly for Conditional 3rd and 4th Picks

Holland doesn't do business that way. He's management, its a business. If anything, his fault is that he let's loyalty factor into his business dealings. Funny how people complain (not you necessarily) about Holland being too loyal to his players ( Clearly, Franzen, Howard, etc) and then also complain that he treats his players poorly (Mrazek, AA). Which is it?

Next contracts for the young guns

Holland overpays for pending UFAs because he has no leverage and he overvalues his own guys. Larkin, Mantua, and AA are all RFAs. He actually does well with contracts he controls. I wouldn't worry about those contracts.

Welcome to LGW. Unless of course, you're a retread, than shame on you. I voted yes, and I think its likely he's re-signed. He wants to be here, he just started a family, he didn't seem all that enthusiastic about being traded to a contender. I believe the reason he wasn't traded is because the return wasn't good enough. I think there were teams interested, I would be shocked if someone wasn't willing to throw at least a lower draft pick out there for him, despite his injury. I think it was more of Holland not wanting to sour his relationship with Green by accepting a lowball offer for him. The only reason he would do that is if he is interested in bringing Green back. I also think that if Holland got anything from Green that he wasn't serious about re-signing, he would have traded him for the best offer, even if it was lower. (Like Mrazek). Seems like both of them are on the same page. That said, I am thinking a 3 year/15 million dollar deal. 6.0 year 1, 5.0 year 2, 4.0 year 3. Makes it a 5 mil cap hit.

I said B. If he had done nothing at all on Monday, I would have given him a D, since he did trade a goalie. The Tatar trade bumped it up to a B. Would have been an A with a solid return for Green.
  20. Really like what the Rags did this TDL. Traded Nash, Grabner, Holden, Miller and McDonagh and getting back Namestnikov, Spooner, 5 prospects, 3 1st round picks, 2 2nd rounders, a 3rd and a 7th. That's how you rebuild.

    Tatar traded to Golden Knights for 2018 1st, 2019 2nd & 2021 3rd

Quite a haul for an "offensive" guy with a 5.3 mil cap hit for the next 3 years who's on pace for only around 40 points this season. Hoping Nyquist steps it up next season and earns a new contract, but if not hopefully we can expect a similar return.

    Rumors Thread

http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/2018/02/red_wings_mike_greens_injury_p.html Some excerpts: "Green suffered a neck injury on a hit from Tampa Bay's Adam Erne on Feb. 15. He hasn't played since, and it affected his trade value. That's why Green remains a Red Wing past Monday's deadline, general manager Ken Holland said." "He was open to being traded. He would have loved to have the opportunity to go to a team that had a real chance to win the Stanley Cup," Holland said. "Two teams wanted to know specifically what was going on with his injury and that had a real bearing on their decision. I think between the defensemen possibly available and the uncertainly of the injury, it all impacted it." "Green, 32, agreed to waive his no-trade clause to go to Tampa Bay or Washington. Holland said Green did not exercise the clause to block a deal with any team." https://www.wingingitinmotown.com/2018/2/26/17055216/green-still-wears-red-how-much-of-a-market-was-there From Wiim: "The last obstacle working towards a Green trade today was the holdup over Erik Karlsson and Ryan McDonagh. A team wanting to really bolster their blue line would have these two in their sights, and would view Green as a Option C. With Tampa trading for McDonagh very late in the process and other teams spending much of deadline day negotiating with Ottawa based on reports, I think that really hurt the ability to trade Green." "My guess, and we’ll see as more information comes out, is that there just wasn’t much of a market today for Mike Green." http://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/22588311/nhl-trade-deadline-winners-losers-include-rangers-capitals-flyers-rick-nash-evander-kane Winner: Ken Holland The GM should have been selling low on Tatar. The winger's production is down significantly in points per 60 minutes at 5-on-5 from last season to this season (1.85 to 1.01) with essentially the same ice time. His deal ($5.3 million, three more years) is too much for most teams to take on. Not only did Holland find a willing partner in the Golden Knights, but Holland made out like a bandit with a first-rounder, a second-rounder and a third-rounder. Yes, the first-round pick in 2018 will be low considering the Golden Knights' record this season, but we were impressed he mustered this much. Loser: Ken Holland The Detroit Red Wings had one of the few decent defensemen available in Mike Green. Several teams (Boston, Tampa Bay, Toronto and Washington, to name a few) were in a strong need of defensemen at the deadline. And somehow, Holland couldn't find a taker. Now Green will likely walk away in free agency, and Detroit -- in the process of a long rebuild -- will recoup nothing. Part of this is circumstance; Green hasn't played since he suffered a neck injury on Feb. 15 against Tampa Bay. Even still, it's an unfortunate turn for a team that is straddled by big contracts and needs to be collecting assets.
  23. They're horrible at trades. When they're not trading away franchise players, they're overpaying for journeyman. It was. No. Lol. Move him to forward.
