Some good news for Holland haters

Ya really think that franchise lasts in AZ? Why would anyone ever want to play for a team that shows loyalty to its players? Holland must be an idiot if he thinks that would ever work.

Is the right hockey move to trade Jonathan Toews?

I was, so it was. As much as people hate Abby's, Nielsen's, and Helm's contracts, I would rather be stuck with any one of those than be stuck with a 10 mil+ per year Toews contract with a NMC.

    Rumors Thread

I'm confused. Why do we need to trade everyone away now? The only guys where there is a sense of urgency to trade now is Green (pending UFA) and Mrazek (upcoming RFA who wasn't going to be re-signed). Every other player besides Booth (no trade value) has term left. When it comes to the TDL, term = less value. Tatar has 3 years left. Nyquist, Howard, and Ouellet all have one more year left. They'll be easier to trade this summer or next season and will get more in return. If this team is rebuilding, shouldn't we try to get the most back even if it means waiting a little longer? Why the urgency? As long as these guys aren't being re-signed or let go w/o any return, what's the big deal? I would rather wait and get a good prospect than trade now and get an average one. A 2nd rounder next year is better than a 3rd rounder this year and so on. Let's be patient and wait to see what happens before we climb aboard the annual "Holland is the worst" train. Holland would be a bigger idiot for trading players when their stock is lower, especially when he can be patient and get a better return. That is his job isn't it? Now, if the TDL passes and Green is still here, then flame away. If guys like Nyquist, Howard, etc aren't traded eventually and we lose them for nothing when they become UFAs, I'll be right there with you calling for Holland's head. But if and until that happens:

Don't worry. Things will pick up after the TDL when everyone chimes in about how much Holland sucks because they didn't get what they wanted. Then they'll disappear until July 1st and sign in just to whine and then leave again.

Mrazek traded to Philly for Conditional 3rd and 4th Picks

Its sounds like a weak excuse to me. If we are going to blame Mrazek's failure on how he was treated and Holland not trading Howard, then how do we explain Osgood's success? He was the Wings future goalie at the beginning of his career, and yet the Wings still went out and traded for Mike Vernon. Did he throw a temper tantrum? No. He learned from the veteran and grew as a goalie until he was finally given the starting job for good. All despite the fact that they still kept Vernon around afterwards even going with him in the playoffs instead of Ozzie. And even then he didn't cry about it, he toughed it out until Vernon was finally traded after the Cup victory. His perseverance finally paid off in 98 when he won the cup as a starter. Then 3 years later, he was left exposed in the waiver draft after the Wings chose to bring in Hasek to replace him. Was he bitter about it even then? No. He re-signed with the team again in 2005 and 2006 and led them to another Stanley Cup in 2008. That's the mental fortitude that Mrazek clearly doesn't have, and I don't see him having any lasting success in this league as long as he is that mentally frail. He should have seen Howard as an asset, a veteran goalie with tons of playoff experience that he could learn from and become a better goalie. Instead, he felt threatened and wanted to dictate roster moves in order to satisfy his own fragile ego. So, we can try to blame Holland all we want, but in the end, Mrazek was his own worst enemy. He lost the starting job to Howard, who himself lost the starting job, but didn't give up and had the mental strength to fight and win the job back. Mrazek needs to own up to his own mistakes instead of blaming everyone else for his failure, and so do the rest of us.

Mrazek traded to Philly for Conditional 3rd and 4th Picks

    The term "better" is somewhat subjective, I prefer to look at actual stats and numbers: https://www.nhl.com/player/jimmy-howard-8470657 Season GP GS W L T OT SA GA GAA Sv% SO MIN 2017-2018 44 42 16 19 0 7 1,274 115 2.84 .910 0 2,430 NHL Career 445 429 215 143 -- 61 12,291 1,046 2.47 .915 23 25,392 https://www.nhl.com/player/petr-mrazek-8475852 Season GP GS W L T OT SA GA GAA Sv% SO MIN 2017-2018 24 20 10 7 0 3 678 61 2.81 .910 3 1,303 NHL Career 168 147 74 58 -- 20 4,585 401 2.59 .913 13 9,274 Also, Howard's win percentage is 48% vs. 44% for Mrazek. So what I see is that Howard is the "better" goalie. Holland didn't trade the "better" goalie.

Is the right hockey move to trade Jonathan Toews?

Absolutely, '94-2000 was fun if you were a Wings fan. I remember the Hawks being pretty good for most of the nineties tho. I was just saying that it WAS fun even when they were bottom feeders.

What was Smith? Ericsson is better now, than Smith was then. I think ur undervaluing him with the year he's having. I think most GMs would see him as 4/5.

Mrazek traded to Philly for Conditional 3rd and 4th Picks

I don't see them doing this on purpose. If they did, Hextall would have difficulty making trades in the future that are conditional, other GMs wouldn't bother. It'd be like signing an RFA to an offer sheet, He won't handcuff himself like that. I think this guy changed my oil last week. Stupid reason to be disgruntled. If you've won the starting job, and you're playing well enough to keep it, what difference does it make who the other goalie is?

Rather than copy multiple posts, I'll just respond all at once. First, the only UFA forward I am interested in going after July 1st is JT. If he signs somewhere else, move on. Maybe bring back Vanek on a 1 year deal to replace Booth, but that's it. Second, don't start just trading away players for anything to open up cap space. If you do and you don't get Tavares, than you may have to overpay more guys just to replace everyone you've already traded for peanuts. If you sign Tavares, then you trade away contracts for cap space. You will get less in return at that point because everyone knows u need to shed salary, but at that point-who cares?....You have friggin' John Tavares. Third, I'm still on board with bringing back Green. Kronwall probably plays only one more year, trade or waive Ouellet next season. Green won't be holding anyone down next season. I don't think anyone in GR is ready for full time NHL duty yet. By the time anyone is, there will be roster space available for them. After next season, Ericsson and Daley are on the last year of their deals. They could be traded to make more room if need be. The only way I would say don't bring back Green is if somehow KH gets JT and there is no cap room left after RFAs are signed.

Until Green is traded, there is always the possibility that he isn't. I'm not saying that he shouldn't be, or that he won't be. I would trade him if he agrees to be. But since he makes the final decision on it, it's possible that the team he goes to isn't the team that offers the best return, if he agrees to be traded at all. Common sense says that Green should waive it to go to a contender and have a chance at a cup. Common sense says Holland should trade him and get a good return. Common sense does not always become reality tho. Follow this team long enough, and you're in for a few surprises now and then. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst. I do believe that in the end, Green gets traded. I would not be surprised however if he is not. Different people are motivated by different things. From the articles I have read about Green, its just an impression that I get. I don't know anymore about what motivates him than anyone else here, and I certainly don't have any insider information. But I do believe that he will be back next year, and i think its the right thing to do. I also don't think he'll get the return that some are hoping for. It's entirely possible that neither a 1st round pick nor a high end prospect come back. I would not be surprised if the return is a 2nd rounder this year and a 2nd next year. Obviously, I would like to see more, but I am not getting my hopes up. Hopefully, Holland surprises me.

Some good news for Holland haters

I agree. I think the belief that Yzerman is a pipe dream is overly pessimistic. People have to remember that Stevie captained this team into a dynasty. I would imagine that seeing this team fall into shambles weighs heavily on him. How would you feel if you built a successful business only to see it fail when you left? I do believe there is a chance that he would want to return to Detroit to rebuild this franchise to its former glory. Only this time as a GM, not as a player.
  18. Neomaxizoomdweebie

If Draper is the next GM, I don't think I mind it

I think a lot of it has to do with the idea that players are more likely to trust other players. Then they dont see GMs as a suit which makes it easier to build rapport with current players, free agents, draft picks, etc when the guy theyre dealing with has been there before. Gives a guy like Yzerman a huge advantage. Just my two cents.

Mrazek traded to Philly for Conditional 3rd and 4th Picks

Actually, I think he let his early success go to his head. And as the opposition started figuring him out, he wasn't as willing as he should have been to improve and make changes. He wasn't able to adapt because of it. From what I remember reading, he did finally address his his issues over the summer and worked hard at getting better. Unfortunately, I think it was too little, too late for him. And that's on Mrazek, not Holland.

In the end, its very possible that people will be very disappointed in how the Green situation turns out. If a deal can't be made with a team that Green is willing to go to, or if he's not willing to waive his NTC for others, you may just see #25 on the ice come Feb 27th. Green seems keen on staying in Detroit. He has a wife and young child, and he may just decide that he doesn't want to leave his family for a few months, even if it means a shot at a cup. If that's the way things work out, I won't hold it against him, as he has to ultimately do what he believes is best for his family, not what's best for the team. Now, if he doesn't get traded and he ends up signing somewhere else in free agency, that would be different. I think its very likely he resigns before free agency if he isn't traded at the TDL. 3 years/15 mil may seem high, but I think its fair. Anything less than that I would consider a good deal on Hollands part. I wouldnt be surprised if Green retires a Wing and ends up with an office job in the organization afterwards.

Mrazek traded to Philly for Conditional 3rd and 4th Picks

Picking players in that draft wasn't just about filling their roster with positions of need tho. They were picking far more players than they had roster spots, so some of their picks were just about acquiring assets to move later on. They did that with defenseman. The reason Vegas didn't take Mrazek wasn't just because they didn't NEED another goalie, its also because they didn't see any value in him (even for free) in order to trade him later. Think about it, they picked Nosek- a 24 year old bottom 6 forward who couldn't crack the NHL lineup... on a bad team. Nosek was a mediocre prospect with an average ceiling, and low trade value. And they still picked him over Mrazek! Let's not downplay that.
  23. Wait, Who am I missing? Before Daley, we had Kronwall, Ericsson, DeKeyser, Green, Ouellet, Jensen. That's 6. I guess you could have counted Sproul as ur 7th which would fill out your roster, but he was more suited to be a call up depth defenseman IMO, so i wasn't counting him, McIlrrath, or Lashoff, because I expected them all to be sent down to GR. Considering Kronwall's injury history (groin, back, and knee all within the last year), and only 5 other NHL caliber dmen (I use the term loosely) on the roster, i think adding Daley was the right thing to do. I am assuming that ur counting Wit as the 8th? I could be wrong, but I was under the impression that Wit was signed to provide muscle and take Miller's F spot on the roster. Although I guess he could be an extra D if needed, every website I checked has him listed as a forward, and I don't think he was brought in to be an everyday player though. As a roster addition, that would be the signing I would say was unnecessary more so than Daley. That makes the defense. Kronner, DD, E, Green, XO, Jensen, and Daley = 7. That's where I was getting that from.
