If you're scenario turned out that way, I would totally be on board. It's not bad or wrong, it's just too risky for my blood. It could blow up. What if Karlsson doesn't re-sign? What if we don't get Tavares? Then we've given up the pieces we need for a rebuild and no Karlsson or JT. Have to start over. I tend to play it safe.

    Seattle

Seattle is the largest North American city without a winter sports team (NBA or NHL). They've been trying to remedy that for some time, and just spent tons of money to upgrade the Key arena to be more suitable for the NHL. It would seem they are more interested in hockey right now then basketball, and that the NHL is more interested than the NBA. Also, a recent poll showed that Seattle has the highest number of hockey fans among US cities without a NHL team. (Can't find the link now) The Coyotes almost moved there in 2013: https://deadspin.com/the-coyotes-were-damned-close-to-moving-to-seattle-1643791488 The NHL is coming to Seattle by 2020. Book it.

Which I don't get because the entire world acknowledges that they ARE a "superpower". They are one of the 5 permanent members of the UN Security Council for crying out loud, and one of the most powerful countries on the globe. They are rivaled by only the US, UK, and China on the world stage. So why the need to prove something? Why the need to go to such great lengths to convince everyone else of something we already know? Why tarnish your national reputation on a global level? I don't get it.

Which proves that the NHL can fail or succeed (or in some cases both) just about anywhere. Every successful NHL city started without a team. I'm sure there were traditionalists who scoffed at the first wave of expansion in '67. Nobody cares about hockey in LA or St Louis or Pittsburgh or Oakland! And yet here we are 50 years later and only one of those teams failed (California). And when given a 2nd chance, the Bay area has proven to be a successful NHL market with the Sharks. And the one that everyone thought was a "hockey market" (Minnesota) ended up relocating. You just never know. Kansas City metro area is over 2 million people, similar population to Denver, Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill metro area. You would need less than 1% of the population to show up for games to sell out. St Louis is proof that the NHL could succeed there. Fun fact: Atlanta isn't the only city to lose 2 NHL teams. Both Montreal and Quebec City have as well. Believe it, or not.

    Rumors Thread

No. Larkin and Mantha are part of the rebuild. Karlsson wouldn't be. He'll be 28 come playoff time. By the time the Wings are legit contenders again, Larkin or Mantha will be hitting their prime in Ottawa and Karlsson would be on the wrong side of 30 and trending down significantly. If this team was already stacked with talent and was on the way up, then yes, I make that deal. I just don't think he makes sense for this team at this time. Plus Karlsson is going to be WAY to expensive. He will get max contract for max years for sure. I can totally see him hitting 35 and still making over 10 mil a year. BTW, there may be a flaw in my trade scenario. Can Karlsson be traded after the season is over but before the draft? If he is traded this summer, it would be kind of hard to include a 2017 1st when the draft will have already happened.

Has Blashill finally lost the team?

No. They aren't tanking. I don't think there is an effort on the part of the players to get Blashill fired. I also don't think they have much interest in playing hard for him in order to keep him around either. Hence, the "on and off" effort.

    Rumors Thread

I know this was already mentioned in another thread, but I can't find it now, so I am posting it here. https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/nhl/the-ottawa-senators-have-reportedly-asked-for-all-no-trade-lists-including-erik-karlsson’s/ar-BBGuCfo https://www.sbnation.com/nhl/2017/12/10/16757548/erik-karlsson-trade-rumors-ottawa-senators-no-trade-lists I thought for sure he was staying put. But he may be too expensive for a lower cap team like the Senators to re-sign. If they trade him this summer, the return will be huge. Expect to give up a 1st round pick in this year's draft, a future star, a solid roster player, and more to get him. Personally, I wouldn't. He's an elite D yes. But giving up a 1st, one of Larkin or Mantha, one of Tatar or Nyquist, and more is too much for a guy who will be declining when the kids hit their primes. It will still be fun to watch tho. Someone will pay BIG TIME!

Salary Cap to Rise at least 3 Million

Isn't that what he usually does? There are a lot of Holland type guys available this summer. Correct. It's not that they don't want to be traded ever, it's just that they want some control over when and where they are traded. Totally understandable. The NTC/NMC uproar by fans is WAY overblown. It's not those clauses that make them difficult to trade anyway, its their albatross contracts. Agree. I actually think he WANTS to be in Detroit. He only had the full NMC on the first 2 years to avoid being exposed in the expansion draft. Starting next season, he can only submit a list of 10 teams he won't except trades to, and I can see him refusing if Holland tries to trade him to one of those 10.

Olympic Hockey just got more interesting - Russia Banned

It's bigger than sports for the Russian government. They seem to believe that dominating something athletic on the world stage (the Olympics in this case) convinces the rest of the world that their way of governing is superior, and their country is mightier than it really is. And they are willing to go to such great lengths to accomplish that facade. No one buys into it, everyone knows they're cheating now just like they knew it during the Cold War. Their orchestrated doping effort actually has the opposite effect. I don't understand what the point is in putting so much effort into propaganda that no one buys into. The irony is that if the NHL had allowed players to participate in the these Olympics, the Russians in the NHL would be allowed to compete (as independents?) because they would have passed all of the drug testing thanks to the NHL's anti-doping efforts.

[TRADE] Scott Wilson to the Buffalo Sabres

Wilson finally got his first point of the season 2 nights ago (an assist). Where was the "Did Wilson Score?" crowd when he was 0 for 17(?) games as a Red Wing? As much flak as Sheahan got for not scoring goals when he was here, at least he got assists.

That's what the "traditionalists" say every time a team moves to or an expansion team is granted to a "non-traditional" market. Truth is, it works more often than it doesn't. There have been just as many failures in "traditional" markets as in "non-traditional" ones. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_defunct_and_relocated_National_Hockey_League_teams I would rather see the bottom feeding, league supported teams move to new markets for a chance to turn things around, then stay where they are and continue to leech off of the profitable teams. The NHL will expand to 32 teams. It's inevitable. I think there is a good chance that the Islanders become the KC Scouts within 10 years. I would rather see her "not" wearing a Wings jersey if you know what I mean.

Two Tendies Enter. One Tendy Lives.

I'll take Howard's "BAD" over Mrazek's "BAD" any day. I can't believe the voting is that close. Would rather keep one more year of Howard than qualify and re-sign Mrazek at a minimum of 3+mil for more years.

Wouldn't PBR be too macro for hipsters? Or their taps will just pour out Starbuck's coffee. If they don't show up, it's because they expect the team to be publicly owned and tickets to be free.

I know. It's a hockey forum, so I assumed maybe you played that position or something. Never thought politics had anything to do with it. I've never seen you post anything that would ever lead me to believe otherwise. I meant no offense. Just pointing out the irony of someone named Left Winger opposing the snowflake crowd.

    Seattle

Update on the NHL in Seattle: https://www.sbnation.com/nhl/2017/12/4/16736568/nhl-expansion-seattle-relocation-keyarena-renovation-city-council-vote The question now is, who gets expansion and who gets relocation? The league can get as much as 600 million dollars as an expansion fee. So I think that happens first. My guess is that Seattle gets expansion to even out the conferences and Quebec City and Houston are favorites for relocation.
