There's an ugly stripper in the draft this year? Boy, that Hockey is for Everyone initiative is paying off. -

Neomaxizoomdweebie replied to chaps80's topic in General
As was said before, hockey is a team sport. You can't argue that Osgood is superior to Howard because he won 2 cups (not counting Vernon's) and Howard hasn't won any. The teams playing in front of them are at 2 totally different skill levels. As I said before, you put Howard in goal in 98 or 08 and they still win those cups. You put Ozzie in goal from 2009 on and he has 0 cups. Osgood has also scored more goals than Howard, so I guess that makes him better too. Lest we forget that it was Howard who took the starting job from Ozzie in 2009. And Howard was a Calder finalist his rookie year (which he should have won, but too many voters held his age against him). Osgood was never a serious candidate, he finished 5th. Neither has ever won a Vezina either, although in 96 Ozzie finished 2nd (although so have guys like Turek and Cechmanek, so take the Vezina as you wish). Anyway, my point is not to trash Ozzie, loved the guy, never got all the props he deserved. There is nothing wrong with believing that Osgood was/is better than Howard, too each his own. But to argue that he is inferior to Osgood based on team performance just isn't fair. -

Green is double edged sword. The better he plays the more you get back in trading him. The better he plays the more he will cost to re-sign in both term and dollars. It's like when ur dating the hottest girl in the neighborhood...but you live in a trailer park. P.S. I don't live in a trailer park. -

In some ways, Howard is the new Osgood. He's not elite, but no matter what kind of numbers he has, or what he accomplishes, he'll always be "just not good enough". At least Osgood had a good blueline corp and defensively responsible forwards in front of him. I think he gets more respect because of it. Howard doesn't, and put him in to backstop those Osgood teams and he would be just as successful. When Howard's numbers do decline its because he's coming back from injuries not because he's "streaky" or disinterested or a prima donna (all of which Mrazek is IMO). Howard is one of those goalies that you can win a cup with as long as you have a good team in front of him. He is not going to stand on his head and steal games for you. But at the same time, he's not going to lose you games either. Just like Osgood used to be. -

This would actually be more entertaining to watch than what I have witnessed the last 2 games. If AA doesn't play defense, give him the Bowman-Federov treatment and put him in as a defensemen. It certainly couldn't get any worse. Isn't it ironic that Frk's jersey looks like a tombstone? RIP buddy. -

Not saying this to be smart, really don't know. Do they still call it Canadian bacon up there? Dickie you seem to get around western Michigan. Have you tried Slabtown Burgers in TC? Had their cherry burger cuz "when in Rome"...Of course if I was really in Rome I would have had pizza at Little Caesar's cuz the name is purely italian right? -
Turnaround is fairplay. I think it only fair that we start poaching from the Lightning....and Chicago....and Toronto....and Dallas...and....

I should be irritated by this, but I can't stop laughing. I noticed there's a guy at 6 who's last name seems similar to a guy the Wings didn't pick last year, and who some of you have already mentioned. If he's there when the Wings pick this year and they don't take him, will there be pitchforks outside the LCA? Thanks for all the hard work Leftwinger. Don't know enough about the players yet. Be back after I've done some research. Yep, Dahlin is going first no matter who wins that pick. Cornerstone dman are just too good to pass up. -

I was thinking the exact same thing. It was ridiculous. It wasn't even justifiable icing, it was "I couldn't even hit Anders Ericsson's big 'ol bubble butt with my passes" icing. Even if the rules didn't require it, I would have made them stay out there for the faceoff anyway if I was Blashill. http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/2017/10/red_wings_skip_practice_hold_t.html I know most of you were probably already aware of this article, but it got me thinking if this debacle is all on Blashill. I feel like a traitor for even thinking it, but might there be a team leadership problem as well? Z's been my favorite player since his rookie season, but I have to wonder if the "Speak softly and carry a big stick" approach that worked for Yzerman and Lids just isn't anymore. Maybe they need someone with a more confrontational "in your face" style. Z is clearly leading by example, but it just doesn't seem to be working. The team as a whole has no compete level. I don't mind losing if guys are working their arses off, but I'm not seeing that. Z deserves to wear the "C" until he retires, but I think it might be time for some new "A"s? -

I have to be fair. Living somewhat between both cities, I have visited both. I have to admit, I do find more to do in Chicago than Detroit personally. Definitely not critical of Detroit though. It has its own "charm"? I guess it just depends on what ur looking to do. Either way, disrespecting your former community is bad form. Guess he forgot about the murder epidemic in Chitown? -
I was right the first time. She looks like an Olsen twin. Not good. Naa. Shannon Elizabeth was the true beauty of that movie.

Agreed. He's really good when he's healthy and gets regular starts. http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/2017/08/red_wings_outlook_jimmy_howard_2.html -
I don't think he was completely useless. He was just poorly used. I thought he was a decent 3C, but Blashill kept slotting him in on the wing and on the 4th line. So he struggled mightily. It became obvious once AA was signed that he was a goner. Would have preferred to keep both on a 23 man roster, but the cap didn't allow for it, and no one was taking Helm, Glenny, or Abby's contracts. Holland got a decent return considering his value at the time, but didn't really get as much back as I would have liked to considering the investment.

There is nothing wrong with trying to build thru the draft. In the salary cap era it's a necessity. And of course it shouldn't be the only strategy, and as krsmith said you supplement it with trades and free agent signings. But the question is this: Is Holland succeeding on any of these fronts? CRL pointed out that there hasn't been a meaningful dman drafted since Kronwall (unless you count Smith or Quincey). That is an area of deficiency that Holland has addressed thru free agency (Green, Daley). But those guys are older and aren't building blocks. If we want good, young defensemen we can either wait a few more years and hope that Hronek, Saarajarvi, Cholowski pan out (Holland's track record isn't encouraging) or we can trade for one with an area that Holland has done reasonably well at: drafting forwards. Which one is best is up for debate. I don't think fans are complaining about the "draft first" mentality, just that (a.) he seems to be relying on it too much (b.) he isn't doing a good enough job at it (c.) he isn't doing well enough in the supplementary areas (d.) he seems to contradict himself by trading away the players he's drafting to rebuild with (credit Jonas).

My first response was a reply to Kliq's post about the blind hatred for Holland that exists here (although it seems to have lessened lately) and other sites (Hockeybuzz is rife with it). That wasn't directed at you, but since Kliq quoted you I can see why you might think that. My apologies. I was however responding to the part about me thinking Holland's model was "flawless." I have never said that, nor does anything I have said in here reflect that. I would invite you to take your own advice and look at MY previous posts. I have more than once stated that Holland has made some bad deals. I hated the Helm and Abby deals. I will also say that I hate the Ericsson deal. I hate overpaying for UFAs and veterans just as you do. They make it harder to sign the kids. How is that flawless management on my part? Would it surprise you to know that I actually agree with you on Smith, Sheahan, Sproul, and Tatar. The only ones you posted that we disagree on are AA and Daley. Does my differing opinion on those 2 deals mean that I live in 2008? I also hate overpaying for RFAs, which I believe AA's asking price was. 500K may not seem like a lot of money now, but with all of the bad contracts on this team that will still be here for years to come (on Holland), that 500K could interfere with Holland's ability to resign guys like Mantha, Larkin, or Svech, who are all more important to the rebuild than AA, IMO. And if AA can't understand that this is a business and he lets it affect him personally, than maybe he's too emotionally/mentally weak to be here. -
LOL, did the Robitaille, Holmstrom, Larionov line even make that much?
-
Why couldn't they have just moved the troughs into the visiting team's locker room?
-
A lot of the "trades are hard" is just sarcasm. I know I've joked about it. High end trades like Shanny, Chelios, Hasek are a thing of the past. Wings were a contender then, picks and prospects were expendable. Now that a rebuild is on (hopefully) they just can't afford to make a lot of those kinds of deals anymore. I don't think those are the kinds of deals people are expecting (or at least they shouldn't be). That doesn't mean that they should hoard all of their picks/prospects either. Most of them won't pan out anyway. I do think they have the assets to acquire a young 2nd pairing defenseman with 1st pairing potential. That's the kind of trade l think most are looking for. Not easy, but I think there is the belief that Holland is too gunshy to pull the trigger on a deal like that even if one was on the table. Therefore...Trades are hard.

Yeah I agree, but it'll be Booth cuz he's on the 2 way contract and he already passed waivers so no risk of losing him. Don't expect Wit to get much ice time once AA is ready.
