Athanasiou Signed 1 year $1.4 mil

This, this and more this! It's sad that there are fans that are so blinded by their confirmation bias for Holland that they are incapable of viewing each of his moves on their individual merit. Is there a substantive argument in there somewhere that I am missing?

Ryan Sproul traded for Matt Puempel

This from Wikipedia: Eager for the chance to select Puempel, Ottawa traded a pair of second-round picks (35th and 48th overall) to Detroit in order to obtain the 24th overall spot in the 2011 draft.

    Sheahan and a 5th for Wilson and a 3rd

It's Holland so it must be a bad deal. Seriously though, I found this article that speaks well of him. Seems like he is the kind of guy that will fit in well and will be liked by the fans. http://www.post-gazette.com/sports/penguins/2017/05/19/Scott-Wilson-Penguins-Ottawa-Senators-Stanley-Cup-playoffs-NHL/stories/201705190083

If you want to argue that Holland should have signed him sooner because AA was worth what he was asking, that's a legit argument. But if you are saying that Kenny should just give in to AA's demands so that he doesn't hurt his feelings, I disagree. I would rather "piss off" a young kid than overpay him. Vet or kid, UFA or RFA, there is no excuse for Holland to overpay anyone. I am not defending him for overpaying vets, neither Abby or Helm are worth those deals. Its a negotiation, Holland does better when he has more leverage. Not going to criticize someone for getting the best deal for their side, agent or GM. If a cashier screws up and gives me back 10 dollars more in change than they're supposed to, does that mean that everyone in line behind me should expect the same?

I'd love to have him, and I hate to say it, but I think its more likely to see Ulf Dahlen in a Wings jersey next year.

So if you're wondering why KH plays hardball with guys like AA, but seems to "bend over" for guys like Abby or Helm; that's easy, because he can! AA was an RFA. Holland risks nothing by not signing him quickly. AA is not an UFA, he cannot sign somewhere else. Holland doesn't have to pay AA's asking price if he feels its too high. He doesn't risk losing him for nothing by not signing him, therefore there was no urgency to get it done. Guys like Helm were set to become UFAs when their contract was up. If Holland didn't sign them, he risks them signing somewhere else and losing them for nothing. That gives pending UFAs more leverage. More leverage = more money. So even if AA points to guys like Abby or Helm and says "look what they're making!", its irrelevant. Holland can just point back at them and say "UFA leverage." And if you want to criticize the money, remember that if Abby or Helm were allowed to reach unrestricted free agency, someone other than Holland would have "overpaid" them. And he would have lost them for nothing. Therefore the urgency to "get it done" was much higher and the increased leverage on the part of the players led to Holland paying more. Hindsight is 20/20 and its easy to say "then Holland should have let them walk and let someone else overpay." And I would agree with you. Both Abby and Helm's deals were a gamble. And Holland lost on both of those deals. It happens. Let's just say I wouldn't give Kenny any of my money to take to Firekeepers. Its fair to criticize KH for those deals, but he played the AA deal perfectly.

    2017-18 Lines Thread

I really like those lines. You have 3 lines that can score. You have size and speed spread throughout all 4 lines. Who are you keeping as 13/14th forwards? Wit and Sheahan and send down Booth since he's on a 2 way? (assuming you can fit 14 under the cap) I am always concerned with seeing Helm at center. I know he was a really good 3C earlier in his career, but he was always having injuries back then. Always wondered if it was because of greater wear and tear playing center. It seems like he became much more durable when he was moved to wing. Maybe switch Glendening and Helm? Not that it changes much, but is Kronwall your 7th D or are you figuring an injury? As long as he can skate, I think he's a better option with Green than Ericsson.

Nope, the year the Wings actually land a lottery pick, it'll be Stefan or Daigle. Did Sheahan Score? @DidSheahanScore No Did Ericsson turnover?

Maybe AA is some sort of sneaky genius. He is getting more headlines as a holdout now than he would have ever gotten if he had just signed. People outside of Detroit actually know how to pronounce his name now. His name is all over the hockey internet sites. So is he really, really dumb or just really, really, smart?

So Draper is listed as "Special Assistant 'to the' General Manager". Where is that in the hierarchy of the front office? Is he Assisstant GM? What exactly does he do? Was that just something they made up to give him a front office job? Wasn't that Dwight Schroot's title on "The Office"? Doesn't Jiri Fischer hold the same position (Director of Player Development) that Holland had before he was Assistant GM? Don't think he is a serious candidate yet, but could promotion to Assistant GM a possibility? I have so many questions, I need answers!

    2017-18 Lines Thread

I can't speak for anyone else, but I have visited this site as a guest for years before I actually signed up. Started coming here when the Wings forum at Detroit news online went away. I remember seeing BlueAdams, The Axe, Number9, Banned for Life, Frankgrimes and many others (Crymson too) that pop up from time to time when CRL resurrects old threads. Always assumed they were still here using other aliases. I always loved FlashyG's work here. The one with Holland, Babcock and I think Quincey and Cleary? in the car is pure genious. Some I still see listed as being signed in, but they don't post anymore, which is sad cuz this site is so much better the more variety of members there is. If any of you are reading this, please come back.

    Tatar Re-Signs 4 Years $21.2M ($5.3M AAV)

LOL, with all the Tara Reid talk in the other thread, I at first thought it said "Tara Reid signs 4 years $21.2M"!!!

Yep, Stevie could crap an octopus on center ice during the national anthem while in a drunken stupor and wearing a Patrick Roy jersey and Wings fans would still love him. He would really be in a no lose situation if he came here. Just curious, does anyone think he would be as loathed as Holland if he had made the exact same moves as GM? I don't. Sorry, Tara Reid was never hot.

Didn't realize Nill was extended, sorry about that. Definitely a "no" then. I hadn't thought about Lamoriello because I thought he was Vice President with the Leafs, but now I see he's GM. So it wouldn't be a demotion then. I always liked what he did with the Devils (aside from the Kovalchuk deal), would love to have him here, but according to Leafs fans, Toronto is the place everyone wants to go and noone wants to leave so... Just hoping Yzerman isn't signed by his choice, and he is just waiting to see what happens with Holland.

I had to look this up for myself, not because I don't trust you, but because it just seemed too pathetic. Kronwall was drafted in 2000. At first I thought Fischer? He was a legit top 4 and would possibly still be playing in Detroit if not for the heart issues. But he was drafted the year before. Then I remembered Bykov who was drafted the year after Kronwall. I don't remember that much about him, he only played in the NHL for the one year before going back to Russia. But I think he played in the top 4, with Lids maybe? But so did Dandenault, Lids made everyone look better. Would he have been a top 4? Not sure. Then there's Quincey in 2003. A borderline 2nd pair defensemen? Not trying to nitpick here. Regardless, its really sad. Has any other team been so bad at drafting Dmen since 2000? Can you imagine what it would have been like to have Lids, Kronner, Fischer, Stuart and Bykov all manning the blueline at the same time? Instead we had the likes of Quincey, Smith, Kindl, Meech and Lebda.

So that makes Hartford the perfect candidate for a $400 million taxpayer funded stadium, right?

Pretty sure its just Ericsson. He's been very "generous" this year.

You missed the "what do I know?" part. He was the Wings Assistant GM before he went to Dallas? He was groomed here, he still has ties to the team and I am assuming his stay in Detroit was a positive one. Wings ownership and upper management has always been admired and well thought of around the league. Good team or bad, I think there would be a lot of interest in the job, including Nill. Its not like the cupboard is bare either. Plus you can spend to the cap, and no more "streak". In a couple years the Ericsson, Helm, Abby, Kronwall, Weiss contracts are off the books. You'll have Larkin, Svech, and Rass to build around, and other pieces to trade for dmen. Assuming that Holland doesn't add anymore bad contracts that is. I guess its like asking would you rather GM a good Astros team or a bad Yankees team?

That solves the horn dilemma too. So is it supposed to be like a fog horn? I mean its Michigan, its surrounded by lakes full of boats. Wouldn't a fog horn make sense?
