Well this will be interesting. Whoever signs here next will know he has Holland by the balls. Time for things to get a little ugly and to see who sticks around. I don't see why people are upset at these guys for going to the Wild. It's better than them selling out and going to a perennial competitor like the Penguins to win. Sounds like they want to win on their own terms and do it for the region they grew up in, which happens to be one of the greatest American hockey hot beds. They essentially want to bring the cup home. Makes perfect sense to me and I find it to be a respectable decision.

Could Wings still make a move on Weber this year?
Seraph replied to turbowhistle86's topic in General
Prying an RFA out of the hands of another team is too costly. If we want to continue being a successful team and avoid a rebuilding era, we rely on those picks. Getting a player of Weber's caliber could cost us multiple first round picks. And I don't see why our division rivals would trade us his rights unless we pay out our noses. -
Suter Watch: Decision today, down to Wings/Wild

Bravo, LGW for reaching unimaginable levels of hilarity and creepiness. Just got off the evening shift and I found myself cracking up at this anxiety ball, aviation stalker thread. On to another day or two of madness!- 487 replies

List of why Zach Parise and Ryan Suter should choose the Red Wings...
Seraph replied to MrBest7's topic in General
Red already looks good on one of them and mustard yellow doesn't on another. -
I mean, what happens if they don't find a sucker to give up astronomical assets? They are going to have to cave in and take the best offer. Otherwise they're going to have a captain who hates playing for his team.

Oh I don't know, because maybe it's potentially a $100+ million dollar decision. When was the last time you made one of those? Also, they're choosing where they will be playing their prime years and maybe the rest of their careers. They are also gambling with their chances of winning a Stanley Cup and deciding which team mates they want to try and do it with. Oh yeah, you might need a couple of days to decide what city you want to be contractually obligated to live in for the next decade of your life. I mean, I would even need some time to think that over and I'm getting paid way less than league minimum, haha.

signed Red Wings Sign Mikael Samuelsson to 2-yr, $6m deal (w/full NTC)
Seraph replied to Matt's topic in General
Wrong. Ken Holland will send him off to a Canadian team and then resign him in a year or two for a tad more than he deserves. You know, kind of like what we did with Sammy and are in the process of doing with Hudler. -
Parise Watch [update x2]: Red Wings OUT of Running
Seraph replied to Dominator2005's topic in General
Parise was always the icing on the cake, people. Don't get your hopes up. I'm pretty sure if Holland is in his office checking twitter for updates, we're not being as heavily considered. I'm sure the teams he's considering are in active communication with him and his agent. -

signed Red Wings Sign Jordin Tootoo to 3-yr deal, $1.9M/yr
Seraph replied to Tim.D's topic in General
Not thrilled and I don't know the crap he has gone through in the past until he got here, but I'm willing to watch and see how he does wearing our jersey. Throwing a fit won't do anything now. Hopefully his upside will shine through. -
I have a feeling Suter is feeling the Wings and Parise is leaning toward the Pens. Now it's just a matter of deciding if they want to play together or not.

These reports out of Pittsburgh are so infuriating. It feels like some dude is making a move on a girl you are into. Not cool.

Suter will be in Detroit. Too much is riding on that signing for Holland to let it slip away. He'll get good money to play for an original six team where he'll be stepping into a pivotal role with the potential of developing into a leader. Isn't that what these guys dream about? Weren't we one of the top if not number one on the list of teams NHL players wanted to play for? We've got the money now so let's hope we have a good week. Merry July 1st eve everyone.

I don't have a problem with his contract as much. I think what annoys people is that we've all seen how much potential he has and he doesn't always fulfill it. I mean if I had the dude's size, I'd be running around like a wrecking ball out there. Instead we haven't seen much growth and his production has remained streaky.

i hope we dont panic if suter and parise signs elsewhere
Seraph replied to nyqvististhefuture's topic in General
This board? Panic? No! -
If we replace him with a more complete, multi-dimensional player then I'm all for it. I don't think he'll get amazing offers on the market so I think we have some time to play with. People know he's a small player with a one dimensional role on a talented roster. If I were a GM I would not expect his point production to keep up on a non-puck possession style team without amazing centers.

]I think CBA was designed for this. They wanted to create hometown heroes and then spread the rest of the talent across the league. It's working pretty well in my opinion. Each team has its core where it invests most of its money, and the rest are either developing players or career bottom six. In my opinion, it's not a good idea to include a goalie in the highly-paid core of your franchise. It hasn't panned out well in most situations, notable mentions being the disaster contracts of Bryz and DiPietro. Obviously you can't let a guy like Quick walk, so I suppose it's worth the risk. Though if I were a GM, I would try to sign goalies I like to well-paying, short contracts. It seems they play better when they're hungry and out to prove something when a contract year is coming up. Of course, I have no idea what goes into contract negotiations so maybe that's not a feasible thing.

It's not a Kenny Holland move to take a cap hit of 6.66 million for a player that will eventually be in his 40s. That's just stupid. We paid that much for Nick Lidstrom when he was still a Norris trophy contender. The only way he'd take that kind of a contract would be if it were an offer he could not refuse. Franzen for Kovy straight up. Wings get his crappy contract, Devils get a decent player with a history of being a big playoff performer. Plus they get an extra $3 million or so to put into Parise's pocket. Otherwise I don't think Holland would bite.

Howson probably got creeped out by it, a "what does he know that I don't" type situation. Haha. Idiots.

Agreed. This off-season is probably one where the impact of his work will be the biggest we have seen in years. His usual "we're happy with what we have" mentality won't apply because there are glaring holes and a ton of cap space to fill it up with. Just looking at his record, he seems very careful about overspending. Some examples include Bertuzzi (after first stint) or Hossa. It'll be interesting to see if he passes on a big name because he's worried about overpaying. He has always said that his philosophy is to have a dedicated nucleus of players and this is the first time we've seen a spot open up in that core with Lidstrom leaving. That makes me think he'll be more willing to go to the bank on at least one player that he thinks will be a good long-term investment.

Dats, Hank, Helm, Kronwall, Howard. Dats because of his magic. Hank and Kronner because of their leadership, plus how special is it to see a player do this. Helm because he finishes every check, , and decided he was just going to play his heart out to make up for any lack of talent. And Howard because you have to always love your home grown goalies, especially when they're .

Top Swiss-leaguer Brunner to sign with Wings, Babcock has big plans
Seraph replied to evilzyme's topic in General
Agreed. With the cap space that we have right now, a classic Holland "we're happy with our team" off-season would be a failure. A good GM would use the money to make improvements. Having said that, the low risk move on this Brunner kid doesn't exclude big moves to come. If he's a bust, we can always send him to the AHL. Time will tell.- 139 replies

Jordan Staal traded to Carolina, signs 10-yr, $60m extension
Seraph replied to Salviaman's topic in General
I don't know what the rush is to go play with his brother. If I were Carolina, I'd wait it out another year until he is a UFA instead of throwing all those players at a contract that is going to expire in a year. I mean it's a given that he'll probably resign, but what's the incentive of trading for him now? All the players Pittsburgh acquired have multiple years left on their contracts.
