Here's a thought experiment for you: Country A pays their workers on average 60K per year. Country B pays their workers on average 15K per year. What should country A do to compete with country B? A. Force workers to accept 25% of their current wages B. Tariff the goods from country B to offeset their labor advantage C. Do nothing and allow work to move to country B ?

In all seriousness, I've enjoyed watching the new media narrative of "tAriFfS JUsT mAKe THiNgs moRe eXPeNsiVE" That would be true... if you only think in 1 dimension. Sure the chinese made widget becomes 25% more expensive for the consumer today. But the residual effect is that an American made good now takes that widgets market share (+jobs +earnings +manufacturing +growth). I worked in importing/exporting Asian and Europen goods from 2015 to 2022. I saw it first hand. The day import tariffs took place in 2016 we had an executive meeting that resulted in my former employer ceasing all importing and distributing of chinese goods in our product line. And on our Euro goods we were forced to eat the cost and increase our prices. Do you know what the result of this was? Our US based competitor killed us, and basically captured the American market on all the goods being tariffed. Do you know what we did to compete? We refocused all our capitol into expanding our production in the USA. Funniest part is: Our flagship product wasn't even cheaper than the American version before the tariffs lol. But after the tariffs we could no longer land the product in the US at a competitive offering for the customer. So price did not rise for the American consumer... the tariff just killed foreign competition in the market. USA's economic power rests on being the largest consumer market in the world by far. An import tariff is a major flex of that power. The same cannot be said of Canada. I do think Canada and Mexico would be wise to also impose more import tariffs, but they have to be more strategic, as both don't have the market flex the USA does that can kill a companies bottom line. Especially Canada. Mexico on the otherhand is quickly becoming a manufacturing powerhouse. And trade between the US Mexico is likely to increase despite any tariffs on Mexican goods, thanks to the tariffs on the Chinese. Despite Mexico's "issues" IMO they are on the doorstep of a major economic boom. I'm seriously considering buying land down there so I can ex-pat down there in retirement. Anyway tariffs work and are good. There's a reason Biden and Harris didn't end the ones trump imposed in his first term! Regard awayyyyyyyyyyyy!
