There's only two acceptable outcomes to this situation: 1. Pav stays and plays his contract out. B. Pav leaves and Holland trades the contract to relive $5.5M of it. ....there is no other way to look at it. NOT trading the contract is suicide and Holland will just prove he is not only as bad as some of us think, but he would then move in to the "one of the worst GM's" category...any GM that would purposely handcuff his team with a $7.5M cap hit on a dead contract has no business running a team and should be FIRED. There is going to be at least 5 teams out there that could use the dead $5.5M to get above the cap floor.

Here's my issue, and I understand the market, BUT I hate that the market dictates to salary and not performance. Just because he is a #2 here, he could be only a #4 on most others, so we have to base his salary on the fact that 29 other #2 guys make $6-$7M. That is why I said I miss when you actually had to earn your contract... anyhow, if Holland gives DD $6M that would give you two $6M guys and two others making a combined $9M. So just becuase the market dictates it, we should pay 4 D-Men $21M? What are you going to have to pay Yandle to be your #1? $8M? I'm fine with giving DD $4.5M but no more. He can ave a 2 year bridge deal, then after that he can get his 8 years. I only wish that things can be written in contracts that if you don't play to your market value deal, then you give up salary to the market value of how you are playing... I have no ill will for DD, for pete's sake I was one of if not the 1st person to mention him possibly signing here and hold him very high on the totem pole. I have him being one of your future "A's" after Pav and Kronwall....hell, he may get it as soon as next season with all the Pav drama happening...

I hope he comes back and scores 4 for the same reason....remember everytime Pulk went back to GR last season, he scored at will, but couldn't/can't do it here...I hope Mantha isn't the same.

I don't see it. I really don't. $4.5M tops. If he gets more, OMG, we;re doomed for any sort of upgrade up front or on D... This mess gets a boost by (if Pav leaves) trading Pav (contract,) Howard, Smith...and along with Franzen on LTIR. Trade Pulk and Jurco for picks (they aren't being played, might as well.) Go HARD for Stamkos and Yandle.....re-sign Mrazek ($3.5M) DD ($4.5M) Sheahan ($2M) Marchy ($1.5M) Helm ($3.5M) Go from there. If those players are traded (you don't even need to trade both Pulk and Jurco, just one will do) and the cap is $74M, we are sitting pretty to offer Stamkos $8.5M-$10M and Yandle $6M....it can be done, if Holland is seriously wanting to upgrade his team for the better. If he keeps the contract, doesn't trade Jimmy and Smith, this team is doomed to the same result year after year. Just imagine, by trading the contract, Howard, Smith, one of Jurco/Pulk and Franzen on LTIR, we will have $36M+ in cap space.

I agree....hey when Steve Yzerman was 35, he was 2nd, 3rd line all the time, he finished that year with 52 points and played four more years all with still being an effective leader. Hank had 50 points this year (he is 35 as well) he could easily move down to that 3rd line center and still get 30-40 points a year and be the effective leader he needs to be for the next 4 years or so. Hank played in all 82 games this year, Steve only played in 54 games that year, but given the fact that the game has changed so much since then, its no wonder Hank scored less per game. I am not saying Hank is Steve, but I am saying that Steve was "demoted" to a lessor role on the ice in scoring and prolonged his career and was still a very effective Captain and actually lead his team better from that position...Hank could do the same. We have two very good, very high end prospects that could become 1st and 2nd line centers in Larkin and AA and allow Z to ease it out now, if we were to acquire Stamkos, it would take even more pressure off Z to score and he could lead better.

If Holland doesn't trade that contract PLUS gives DD $5.5M, he really needs to be fired!

According to Capfriendly.com ( https://www.capfriendly.com/teams/redwings ) they already have a projected $17.1M WITH Pav's $7.5M on the books, if they could shed it, they will have $22.6M (with the $2M penalty) available. Trade Smith and Howard, we're talking $8M more...not sure if Franzen's LTIR is reflected in the original $17.1M, but if not, obviously that's $3.9M more! Even if they don't trade Smith and Howard, $22.6M is plenty to re-sign our RFA's and still pursue (hard) a scorer and top D.

I get it. My point is you can't have all your D making that much money. Unless Holland deals Ericsson there isn't room for a raise for KFQ...unless Holland doesn't upgrade his D at all. Swedish Meatballs - $9M DD - $4.5M (?) Green - $6M Q - $5M? Smith - $2.75 Marchy - $1.5M(? re-signed) that's $28M in 7 D BEFORE you try to upgrade...Unless you trim the fat, you cannot give Q a raise AND sign a #1 guy. We all agree E is overpaid, but so will Q at any kind of raise or to stay the same. UNfortunately if he wants $5M, he has to go. You sign Yandle, trade Smith, let Q walk and bring up XO.

Well, we need a top D man...I guess if Holland trades Smith then that would open up two spots, one that can be filled by KFQ. But he is already overpaid, does he take a paycut? He is not worth $5M+ a year, I don't care how he played the last 10 days. We need a Yandle type player, DD is getting at least KFQ money, Green is at $6M, The Swedish Meatballs are at $9M combined. You just cannot give KFQ a raise or even keep him the same and expect to have money to upgrade.
