...and it has begun! Now trade Tarasenko and let's use the cap space to make us better!

2025 Trade Deadline March 7 - Playoffs? Buy or Sell or Build?

Ok, lets entertain this idea: Most hockey insiders agree that Yzerman needs to be a buyer (conservative) this TDL. There's been a few names kicked around out there as Detroit being linked to, most recently Cozens, Zegras, and Pettersson. After thinking about these three for a while, I am not sure I'd want to give away the assets (prospect-wise) to acquire any of these. I am fine with dealing picks (even a 1st) but I really don't want to give up on Danielson, MBN, ASP or Kasper. I'm even hesitant on trading away Wallinder, but I do understand that you have to give to get. Again, draft picks don't bother me at this point considering I think our pool is pretty deep right now. That being said, I wouldn't mind a couple of VETS being acquired to help a playoff run, but also a youngster to help solidify the future. I am thinking three guys, the two vets are on teams looking to continue or start the rebuild, I am talking about The Hawks Ryan Donato and Pitt's Erik Karlsson. The youngster I'd like is Bowen Byrum. There is a good chance that we trade Tarasenko, so that will be trimming some cap off the roster. I am also ok with trading Berggren, Veleno, Rasmussen, a 1st, 2nd or 3rd, B level prospect like Viro, Hanas, or either of the Dower brothers, for example. I know Karlsson is 34, and he is not the 24 year old version of himself any longer, but with Pittsburgh looking to get out of the larger contracts, if we assumed the entire amount, it might not cost too much in assets to acquire him. I also wouldn't mind upping a deal and trying to acquire Cody Glass along with him. Ryan Donato is only 28 and could be a nice middle six player with a fair amount of playoff experience. He could also be extended as he is still young enough to be a core player. I don't see him costing more than a 3rd really, and that might even be a bit high. They could let the likes of Fischer walk and Donato would be a definte upgrade over him. Who knows, Motte might not even re-sign here. I'm hoping Kane does, but that's always a crapshoot too. Byrum is gonna cost some assets to acquire, and to re-sign him is going to be pricey, but the cap will be $95M next season. I can see him getting about $7M. Copp was placed on IR today, and Dries has been called up from GR. I think this puts a emphasis on acquiring a legit NHL center. The wrong injury and we're doomed. BTW, Rasmussen is listed day to day. I think Zegras should get a suspension for his hit. The head was the principle point of contact.

He has 2 more season's at $5M. What's he worth? How about a package of him and Lukas Dragicevic? (since we dealt Andrew Gibson away)

2025 Trade Deadline March 7 - Playoffs? Buy or Sell or Build?

Last season, Florida paid a 2024 4th (which was converted to a 2026 3rd) and a 2025 3rd ( two 3rd's) for Tarasenko, if we offer to retain 50% salary, they should be ok with a 2026 2nd. I see on the watch list that Detroit is connected to Cozens and Pettersson. No D? I am not sure we could afford the $11.6M Pettersson contract. They'd have to take some salary back. If we were getting one of Pettersson or Cozens, who would you think would be the better choice for our team? Could Cozens get back to 70 points? Pettersson 100? They are both risks. Rumor has it that Detroit and Calgary are both in hot pursuit for Cozens. Maybe Pettersson is too expensive to acquire. Detroit should definitely be perusing a Byram trade though. We need the upgrade on D. I'd still be good with a Lindgren trade as well. (or just try to sign him in July.)

Or we get embarrassed by giving up 6 goals on 18 shots.

Depending on where he finishes this season, he damn well might get to 1000 next season!

Yep! It's unfortunate that we have to allow Tampa to leapfrog us, but we need them to stop Ottawa. Then we just need to take care of business against them and we will indeed be in 3rd place in the division, 3 points behind Toronto. If we can get some help from Seattle and the NEW Canucks, we can stay within 3 points of Toronto for second as well. I still think if we go ahead and acquire a D and a top 6 forward, there will be no stopping us from getting into the playoffs. We could use picks and prospects and players that may need a fresh start. Veleno, Tarasenko, Gustafsson as an example. Montreal is looking for a young C, a playoff team out there would love to have some depth scoring in Tarasenko, and Gustafsson could help another Cup favorite solidify there 2nd or 3rd pairing. Maybe?

I'd be ok with the Byram deal, but not the condition of one playoff round. Make it to the Eastern Conference Finals (win TWO playoff rounds), yes, then I'll do the condition. I'd still look to shore up the top 6 forwards too, in case of injury. Boeser fits that mold. If nobody gets injured, then we have a helluva top 9. I'd send them the same draft pick condition, obviously a 2026 one though, along with Veleno and a prospect, like one of the Nilsson bros. preferably the older one. There'd have to be a 3 year extension in place for Boeser though. Also Buffalo and Vancouver will retain some salary on the expiring contracts.

I agree, but he did nothing to add last year and after the deadline was over, Larkin got hurt. If they were to acquire a 27 year old pending UFA or two, Lindgren, Boeser as examples, they'd be important to the team for 3 or more years. But I'm fine with going forward and maybe signing 2 in July. We need an upgrade to LHD and a replacement for Kane over the summer.

A lot of deals going down recently, I wonder if Yzerman joins the fray, or stands pat again? that could be a bad decision to stand pat.

GDT: 2/2/25 Red Wings @ Canucks

I am not sure if it is a coincidence, but when I see the sight is down, I message Matt on facebook and then it goes back up. (the message never shows "read" so it just might be a coincidence, but I will keep doing it each time either way! Boys look good! what are they under McClellan, 14-4-1, so that is actually better than good! If they can continue winning 14 out of every 19 or so games, they should be solidly in the playoffs. That would project another 21 wins in the final 29 games. 48 win season? I'll take it. BTW, my 17 year old is having all four wisdom teeth removed tomorrow morning! Routine, I know, but I am a bit nervous. Keep us in your thoughts!

2025 Trade Deadline March 7 - Playoffs? Buy or Sell or Build?

Right now Detroit sits in the last playoff spot. 17th from the bottom, just out of the lottery picture. If this trend continues, I am more than ok trading a #1 pick for a top 6 forward or D upgrade. If they finish in the range of 17 to 20 and still retain the pick, the player I am particularly interested in is Ivan Ryabkin, a 17-year-old center from Russia who is currently competing in Muskegon. He is on track to achieve a points-per-game average in the USHL and has previously played for MHK Dynamo, where he accumulated 58 points in 44 games. Additionally, he served as captain of the under-17 World Junior team, recording 11 points in 6 games. Currently, he holds the 19th position on McKenzie's January rankings list.

2025 Trade Deadline March 7 - Playoffs? Buy or Sell or Build?

If they are solidly in by deadline, I wouldn't mind a deal involving a expiring UFA Defenseman or top 6 forward. I kind of think it's a must at that point. We learned last season, one injury and it all comes crashing down. I still wouldn't mind a defenseman like Lindgren either. Could Boeser be an option at RW?

  23. Los Angeles Kings (26-14-6) vs. Detroit Red Wings (23-21-5) When: Monday, January 27 Time: 7 p.m. ET Where: Little Caesars Arena (Detroit, Mich.) Channel: FanDuel Sports Network Detroit Extra, NHL Network DETROIT -- As the curtain rises on the final act of their brief three-game homestand, game #50 of the season has the Detroit Red Wings preparing for a formidable challenge as they host the Los Angeles Kings on Monday night. Although the Red Wings faced a daunting struggle during their recent road trip, managing to secure only one victory out of four matches, they have undeniably rebounded since their return home. After a significant triumph over the Montreal Canadiens, Detroit, led by a spectacular 28-save shutout from Cam Talbot, took down the Tampa Bay Lightning—merely a week after succumbing to the Bolts in Florida. With another pivotal road swing looming on the horizon, securing victories at home is imperative for a Red Wings team still striving to claw their way back into the playoff race. Heading into Monday night, the Wings currently occupy the seventh position in the Atlantic Division, remaining four points adrift of the final Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference. On the other hand, the Kings find themselves in a considerably more advantageous position than Detroit. Thanks to the team’s solid defensive structure and stellar performances from key players like goaltender Darcy Kuemper and Anze Kopitar, Los Angeles has managed to hover near the top of the Pacific Division. The Kings currently stand third in the Pacific, trailing the first-place Edmonton Oilers by seven points. This encounter marks the second and final meeting this season between the Wings and Kings, with L.A. victorious in their initial clash in Hollywood back in November. Will the Red Wings seize the moment? The stage is set for an exhilarating showdown! DETROIT RED WINGS TOP 10 LA KINGS TOP 10 RED WINGS 50th (and 51st) GAME(s) HISTORY The 50th game of the 1987-1988 regular season had the Red Wings playing the Toronto Maple Leafs in a Norris Division matchup of bitter rivals! The game ended in a 3-3 tie, but the fisticuffs ran wild in this classic "Fight Night at The Joe!" In a fashion that resembles more recent versions of The Red Wings, they held a 2-0 lead going into the 3rd period, only to be outscored 3-1, with Eddie Olczyk netting the tying goal with 3 seconds left to play in regulation! This was the first game of a classic Norris division Home and Home series on consecutive nights. The following night at Maple Leaf Garden in Toronto, the teams battled to a 5-5 tie. The Red Wings scratched their way to a 3-3 tie when John Chabot "Cha-boom" scored 2 goals in 2 minutes sending the teams into the 2 period break. Then after 2 goals in just over 3 minutes by Steve Chiasson and Steve Yzerman, again, with the Wings were holding a seemingly safe 5-3 lead only to give up 2 unanswered goals by (former Red Wing) Mark Osborne and (future yet brief Red Wing) Wendell Clark. I sure do miss these consecutive night Home and Home series'
