"TANK IT" /sarcasm The Wings had a minor letdown there for a bit, but they came back. A 5th come from behind victory this season so far. A little too many for my tastes to be honest, but a win is a win.

I decided to look and see how Calle Jarnkrok was doing in Nashville. As many people here remember, we traded Jarnkrok for Legwand and Jarnkrok had a great ending to the season playing for Nashville. It was starting to look like Holland gave up a gem. Seems that Jarnkrok had a problem cracking the lineup a few times this season and he has gone pointless so far. Not saying that Holland made the right or wrong move last season. Just that so far, he has started slowly. The surprise so far is Fillip Forsberg who is leading the team in scoring. The Preds got him from the Caps last year for Erat. That trade is looking more like a steal.

GDT:11/4 Detroit Red Wings vs. Ottawa Senators 7:30p.m

That Jimmy Howard guy sucks pretty bad. /sarcasm Incredible save. -
The "month of death" is almost in the books. 5-2-2 record so far. Big game against LA on Friday, but so far the Wings are on the right track. Happy with the results so far. Glad we didn't chose to tank it this year.

Babcock "I don't think it will be my final year here"
Nightfall replied to trule23's topic in General
I do agree with you on this point. I really don't see the need to make a change unless we have someone better. Is Blashill better? Keep in mind before he went to the minors and coached the Griffins to a Calder Cup, he was viewed as a weak assistant coach with the Wings. People even saw it as a demotion to coach the Griffins after he spent one year with the Wings. I am not saying he is doomed to failure in the NHL. Just that he is untested in the NHL coaching ranks. -
Just based on the quality of threads in the offseason, this team was pretty much given up and left for dead. With every loss, these naysayers get stronger, with every win, they get weaker. The "Tank it!" thread is all you need to read in order to get an idea of just how bad it got. The Wings have played solid considering their first 10 games were considered to be the "Month of Death". They are to be commended for sure. Howard has turned his game around. The kids are fun to watch. Tonight was a real gut check victory and the team is going to be stronger because of it.

Good teams fight through adversity and win. Bad teams blame losses on adversity. That really is the difference in a game, season, and/or the playoffs. The Wings have played remarkable hockey so far this year. Howard is off to a great start. The kids are playing well, despite not scoring a lot. I am very eager to see how this team does as the kids get older. We knew that we are going to have a period of inconsistency.

When Dats comes back, I bet you will see Jurco move back down to Grand Rapids.

Man, Franzen is lazy and he sucks! /sarcasm Mule x2!
-
I may as well say it.... Franzen is lazy and he sucks. /sarcasm He now leads the Wings in total points.
-
This right here. While I am disappointed in the non-call, you can't blame the refs entirely. The Wings had a ton of chances to win this game and just couldn't bury their opportunities. Good teams don't rely on the refs or bounces to win games for them. I am not disappointed in their effort at all.
-
I am normally a very big supporter of the referees. In this situation though, I can't defend them. That was a turnover that resulted in a goal and that should be called all the time.
-
I am still trying to figure out how the ref can only take Glendenning in that situation. Just seems to me that he should have taken Kessler as well.

After reading for months on these forums about how members wanted the team to tank it and how the team was going to suck balls this year, I think most people have relaxed a bit. This team is not horrible. Boston was coming off a tough game last night, and the Wings really did play like they had the fresher legs. Still, I was happy with the result. Smith really did look good. Franzen's play was much improved. I really enjoy watching the kids out there. They are gaining confidence and that is going to serve them well. Can't wait to see them play on Saturday.

Injured Datsyuk 2nd degree separated shoulder injury - out approx 4 weeks
Nightfall replied to Hockeytown0001's topic in General
Every team is dealing with injuries on their rosters right now. http://www.cbssports.com/nhl/injuries I know everyone here is concerned or upset about the hit, but I look at teams like Carolina that lost Staal for a much longer period and acknowledge that injuries are part of the game. The hit was clean, and there should be no suspension or fine. Every team is going to deal with injuries, and the Wings are going to be no different. Dats could be back in as early as 2 weeks which would make him a go for the start of the season. -

If they can't find a deal, they're likely to use their final compliance buyout on Tootoo, who has one year remaining on his contract at $1.9 million.

Signed Holland signs 4 year extension with wings **MOD Warning Post 130**
Nightfall replied to amato's topic in General
Point taken. We are going to have to rebuild eventually. The question is, do the Wings do that now or later. From the way management has been moving, it looks like they are going to be looking to make the playoffs again. I was not a fan of the Jarnkrok move at all. -

The point is that there are no guarantees that your strategy will work. Look at Edmonton. They have had a number of #1 picks, but haven't had a sniff at the playoffs since they went to the finals back in 2006. They have had some great young players drafted, but why the heck are they losing still? Don't get me wrong, what you suggest is what happens to every team eventually. There is a natural ebb and flow in hockey. Every team is going to have down seasons, draft high, and then find themselves back in the cup hunt. The Wings are going to have a down season or two here soon. -

So far, he has made some good moves, but I don't know if what he did is going to work or not. Last season, they finished 8th in the conference and got bounced in the first round. If Dallas can put something together this year, then I will agree. Oh, and Dallas is going to spend to the cap limit. They aren't on a tight budget or anything because they aren't spending much. -

This is true to some extent. However, lets look at some of the people whom some fans wanted as GM of the Wings instead of Holland. Yzerman - So far, he has done well at Tampa Bay. Their roster this year looks better than last year. Except since he took over, they made the playoffs their first year, missed the second year and third year, and then made it last year only to get swept in the first round. Better than Holland? That remains to be seen. Ray Shero would be the only guy I would even consider being GM of the Wings. If his job is to ensure that we have a competitive team that competes for a championship every season, he has achieved his goal. If you are measuring accountability by championship or nothing, then there are 29 other GMs who are also failing. -

Best post in this thread. I agree 100%. Yes, I am not happy with Holland's lack of success when it comes to luring free agents. At the same time though, he has kept us competitive. We continue to make the playoffs, and people forget that a year ago, we took the cup champs to 7 games and had them on the ropes up 3 games to 1. The cup champions last season were #6 in the western conference. Making the playoffs, being healthy, and getting some puck luck is really all it takes to win the cup these days. For those of you who want to see Holland gone, I would challenge you to find a GM that is better on the market right now. I see no reason to ditch Holland now in exchange for someone unknown or unproven. I know I am happy with the work he has done in the past, and even though the Wings haven't won the cup or been to the cup finals since 2009, I am good with this signing. -
Best post I have read today. Thanks!

Rule Changes in the AHL (what the NHL has considered)
Nightfall replied to drumnj's topic in General
Personally, I love the OT rules. The other two rules I am not a big fan of. -
Dallas, a team that was the last place team in the Western Conference to secure a playoff spot and hasn't been relevant since they lost to the Wings back in 2008. Tampa Bay, a team that actually did pretty well last year and then got swept by Montreal. The past two seasons before that they didn't even make the playoffs. This is with Yzerman at the helm who was considered to be better than Holland. Sure, these teams seemed to address their teams needs, but we will see how the product on the ice looks and how they do in playoffs. Same here man. I guess I am not a butthurt fan. Sure, I wanted to see a high priced free agent come into play. At the same time though, I am ok with the moves that Holland has made so far. Giving the kids a chance is what he needed to do and he is going to do it. Cleary is just an insurance policy. He won't be beating out someone for a roster spot if they are better. Being objective would be looking at the entire situation. Suter and Parise wanted to play in Minnesota. They have ties to the area. Same with Vanek. Boyle has family in New York and requested to play there for less since the Rangers were against the cap. Players will do what it takes to go somewhere they want to go. When Dekeyser chose to come to Detroit, and the contracts were the same no matter where he went, did you give credit to Holland for this?
-
And both teams saw first round exits last year, same as us. In fact, Tampa Bay made the playoffs in Yzerman's first season as GM, and then missed the playoffs the next two seasons. Yea, we really "blew it with Yzerman". If anything Yzerman is a good GM, but I wouldn't say he was a guy we missed on. Holland and Yzerman are probably close to being the same than we think. The point is that neither of these teams with the moves they made have resulted in success beyond making the playoffs like us.
