I feel like we could add Shattenkirk and Trouba for free and this team would still be middling. This team needs more than just a defenseman or two, more than just a forward or two. This team needs...many things.

That's pretty good, but I would also add Erik Karlsson and Drew Doughty and Roman Josi.

If we're picking outside of the top five or six, I'd be ok with Foote. I'm not totally sold on him being/becoming the caliber of player that we desperately need -- and, well, I guess that's my hang-up about the 8-12 range. We need elite, can't-miss talent. It's an arms race in the Atlantic Division and we're not even in the race. If we're destined to suck for the next several years, then I hope we're destined to suck hard and land a couple of lottery superstars. My fear is that we're destined to "suck modestly" (8-12 range) for the next several years and land some good-but-not-truly-great kids who help our cause but not enough to get us out of the hole we're in.

I think I'd probably lean towards keeping the pick; I'm not sure we'd be able to get much in a trade. Though, I do think we should be kicking the tires on other teams' young defensemen, e.g. Julius Honka, Anthony DeAngelo, Shea Theodore, Rasmus Andersson.

Patrick or Liljegren would be a godsend. But, if we're being honest with ourselves, the Wings are likely picking in the 8-12 range. Which...meh.
