Maybe Holland was just taking care of business early. With everyone healthy, he was going to have move someone anyway. I'm guessing 1/2 guys are coming off IR and the team wants to keep Tatar in the line up longer. No, that was supposed to be last season.
-
How? The kid was a 4th line player on a team with a handful of guys that can better contribute on that line. Plus, the guy made no impact on the team anywhere except the injured reserve and has been passed on the depth chart by Emmerton, Tatar, Andersson and Nyquist.
-
Wouldn't surprise me. Most teams have an abundance of players that can play on their 3rd/4th lines. What would you pay for a small injury prone 3rd/4th line winger in a trade? Plus, teams knew Detroit was going to have to waive someone anyway.
-
In reality, they probably did it to give him some playing time in the AHL since he has barely played the past few season. Obviously no one is going to claim him, so waivers were small potatoes.
-
I've done the math, and all it is is minor speculation based on something he said to his hometown media. It seems most on here just use it as fuel to turn on NHL13 and try to trade Filppula for Sidney Crosby in GM mode and then post about it.
-
Why does everybody seem to think Datsyuk is ready to just pack his bags and go back to Russia? He told the Russian media that he "would like to retire" in Russia. Doesn't mean that he wants to when his deal is done, or that he will do it at all. Lidstrom talked about going back to Sweden as far back as 1999, and retired a Wing 13 years later. Come on now guys... Boy, am I glad you don't have Hollands job... You'd make Mike Milbury look like Bill Torrey, and Garth Snow look like Art Ross.
-
You're ingnoring the fact that trade value means little in NHL13 GM Mode.... If anyone is hoping that Holland packages Filppula for a better player (Bobby Ryan, #1 dman, etc etc), you're dreaming. Slated to become a UFA, Filppula has ZERO value in a trade like that. The players that teams would most want for players like Bobby Ryan would include: Brendan Smith, Darren Helm, Gustav Nyquist or Tomas Tatar AND draft picks. No, they won't want Dan Cleary, Mikael Samuelsson, Ian White or Kyle Quincey. They only way Holland even considers moving Filppula is if by April 3rd the Red Wings are out of the playoff picture. Playoff teams, or teams close to the playoffs will no doubt be calling Holland with offers for Filppula. And don't get your hopes up, they WILL NOT be offering players of Bobby Ryans caliber in exchange. They WILL be offering draft picks, lower level roster players and/or mediocre prospects. If your curious as to what that may be, look back at the past 5 trade deadlines and look at the returns for 2nd line forwards. The return will be something like that. If the Red Wings are poised to make the playoffs, or are on the playoff bubble, Filppula will go nowhere. EVEN if they think he will sign elsewhere in the offseason. / end thread.
-
None. Filppula has no trade value in a trade like that. The only way the Red Wings can get anything for Filppula will be if they are out of the playoff race and a playoff team wants him a rental piece. And they certainly won't be offering any good young players. It'll be middle of the road depth players, picks and/or mediocre prospects.

Who are you to know who was or wasn't running the team at that point? Is that you Mike Illitch? Holmstrom was a great player yes, but I'm not really sure he can be labeled a "star". Same goes for Draper and Maltby.
-
Parise and Suter wanted to play together and Detroit couldn't bring them both. Parise wanted to go home to Minnesota, and Suter wanted to play with him. Pretty easy. Time to get over it... Parise tearing it up? Zetterberg and Datsyuk have much lower cap hits and are arguably playing better this season. That's a stretch. Holmstrom, Samuelsson, Draper and Maltby were never "stars". Good players sure. Chelios, Lang and Bertuzzi were all in decline from their best years.
-
The Shanahan trade was when Jimmy D was still GM. Holland took over the next season. The Chelios trade was a big trade, but was also similar to trades for Lang and Schneider in where draft picks were the biggest part. Eriksson wasn't really part of the Red Wings core. He was a #4/5 dman on that team. The more valuable part of that deal for Chicago was the 2 first round round picks that came along with Eriksson. Unless this team really sinks, I doubt Holland re-writes his team building playbook.
-
That would only be if we are using him to acquire a better player to improve the team. If the Red Wings are out of playoff position as the trade deadline nears, his value to teams that are playoff bound will skyrocket. If that's the case, those teams GM's will most certainly be calling Holland with offers. Same probably goes for White and Howard.
-
Too bad, I really like Lindy Ruff. Buffalo certainly needed a change though, after 15 years. I'm sure he won't have difficulty finding work in the NHL.
-
In an 82 game season, that team is lucky to see 25 wins. 15 if Mrazek and McCollum split the work load 50/50. He does, but very rarely. He's only ever traded a player of Filppula ilk once, and that was Slava Kozlov in the trade that brought us Dominik Hasek. If by the deadline, the Wings are way out of the playoff race, I can see Holland listening to offer for him from playoff bound teams.
-
Or the classic: "He didn't do enough to land Suter" Guys on here were hoping that Holland would kidnap his family and hold them ransom until he signed.
-
Trust me, I was on here then. It was entertaining. NHL06 GM's were proposing ridiculous trades on a daily basis. "I traded Andreas Lilja, Kirk Maltby and Kris Draper for Sidney Crosby. You guys think that Holland may try this?" or the crazy "sign and trades' with UFA Manny Legace, who had made it clear he didn't want to come back to the Wings. "Guys, how about they resign Legace and then trade him? I traded him for Ovechkin last night and IT WORKED! Get on the phone Holland..."
-
If you look at all of the trades Holland has ever made, he has rarely ever dealt any real key prospects. When aqcuiring a roster player, Hollands playbook most always involves trading: -Middle of the road regular players (Jamie Pushor, Anders Eriksson, Kevin Hodson, Yan Golubovsky, Sean Avery, Maxim Kuznetsov, and Jason Williams) -AHL prospects that don't seem to be in the Red Wings future plans (Philippe Audet, Yuri Butsayev and Sebastion Piche) -Or draft picks (six 1st rounders, five 2nd, rounders, three 3rd rounders, six 4th rounders and one 6th rounder). In 15+ years as GM, Holland has only ever traded three prospects, in order to aqcuire a roster player: -Petr Sykora (NOT the one that won a cup with NJ in 2003, but the one that played 10 games with Washington in 05/06) -Tomas Fleischmann -Shawn Matthias He has also only ever traded one "core" type player in 15+ years, in order to acquire another roster player: -Slava Kozlov Looking over Hollands trade playbook, it's doubtful that he is shopping for young expensive dmen that "could be in the future and could have a larger impact for many years to come".
-
Streit is probably the best of the bunch, but IIRC the Islanders are pretty keen on getting him re-signed and probably won't deal him. Whitney has lost a huge step due to injuries and probably won't be as effective as the Red Wings would like him to be. I personally like Regehr and Murray out of the bunch, but I can see Holland making a pitch for all of those guys depending on where their teams (and the Red Wings are at come April 3rd.
-
I got one. -Holland not stock piling All Star defensemen on the Griffins in anticipation of Lidstroms retirement. FIRE HIM NAOW.
-
10-12 "legit stars" deep? Past Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Lidstrom, and maybe Schneider, I don't know who else going into 06/07 you could consider a "star". Past Datsyuk and Zetterberg, only Lang, Samuelsson, Williams and Holstrom had posted top 6 numbers, and Shanahan had scored 40 goals the previous season. There were alot of question marks heading into 06/07. It was Franzen and Cleary stepping up, and secondary contributions from from then rookies Filppula and Hudler that helped make up for the loss. It didn't come from expensive UFA's, big trades or a rebuild... I can see this too. Since he's a UFA, he probably won't cost the Wings any good roster players and would be low risk. He's also a right handed shot, which would be a plus.
-
I wonder what the Red Wings plan on doing with Mursak? I feel like his lack of durability has made him expendable. It's been two seasons in a row now that he has missed crucial opportunities to prove what he can do for this club, and now it seems he's been leapfrogged on the depth chart by Andersson and Tatar. The only place he would really fit into the lineup is on the 4th line, but the line of Miller-Emmerton-Tootoo has been very good for this team which is probably why Babcock hasn't broken them up. I think with everyone healthy, he was supposed to be in a battle with Emmerton for the #14 spot, but I feel like Emmerton has probably secured it.
-
This team needs a quality top4 dman wayyyy before they need Ryan O'Reilly.
-
The team wasn't exactly loaded up front, a lot of players ended up stepping up to fill the void. Rafalski and Hossa were added by that "key vet here and there approach" that you lamented earlier. How is this team not loaded? They have plenty of depth, which has kept them afloat as injuries have piled up. They also have a lot of good young talent that is showing that they are ready to make a contribution as well. There is absolutely no reason for a "rebuild". I apologize if you are a long time fan. No offense, it just doesn't seem like it.... Probably NHL13.
-
I'm merely being realistic. I've seen the NHL13 fueled posts that you make around here, and it seems as though you may be new to this whole "Red Wings" thing... Even when things get rough, Holland has never resorted to huge shake up trades or "rebuilds" over his 15+ years as the Red Wings GM. I doubt he is going to start now, when the Red Wings are still well into the playoff race. Funny, because after the 05/06 season when they lost Yzerman and Shanahan, people were making the same kind of posts about "rebuilds". Holland made barely any moves (none to replace Yzerman and Shanahan) that summer, and the team went to game 6 in the WCF the following season.
