    Yup. Dunning-Kruger effect.

    Be honest..

Could you imagine the fury that would be unleashed if the Wings were to finally miss the playoffs (by one point) only to get the overall top pick in the draft?

On a positive note, aside from that giveaway, Mantha has looked every bit an NHL player so far

wow these canadiens commentators seem pretty insecure about Howard potentially playing hotter than their favorite goalie thus far. Kinda reminds me of some posters actually lol

He seems pretty annoyed now that Blashill has the gall to play statistically the best goalie in the league over the guy who isn't even in the top 30 for goals against and save percentage.

I think both he and Mrazek play better when they have something to prove. Now that his position as starter is in question, I expect when Mrazek gets another chance between the pipes he will be solid.

Howard is the champ of averageness and luck apparently.

I love that the Joe was cheering Miller's save. What a beaut.

I think its a combination of having a lot of confidence in Howard (who, in the opportunities he's been given, has outperformed the rest of the league) and a complete lack of confidence in Mrazek (who's struggled to be a difference-maker in the opportunities he's been given). Frankly I think the decision to start leaning on Howard more heavily at this point is an obvious one.

    Conflict in the Crease

I took my values from NHL.com so unless they're incorrect I don't know what to tell you. I also used 54 starts, every single one of Mrazek's starts since the beginning of last season. That's representative of roughly half his entire NHL career. Not a small sample size, and when we're talking about half the total value (particularly the most recent half) it's usually a good indicator of what's going on. He looks inconsistent from game to game. That observation has been confirmed with the ideal mathematical equation defined to measure variability from the mean and contrasted with another goalie whom you compared him to, which showed more reasonable deviation. Even looking at the table you assembled shows that Mrazek's distribution demonstrates two peaks at either extreme which account for 43% of his starts. Holtby demonstrates a peak at .950 but his lower half values are pretty consistent and more flat. His two highest values are right next to each other while Mrazek'a are on opposite ends of the graph. It's just another way to visualize Mrazek's inconsistency and is in line with what I've already mentioned.

You knock my using standard deviation of save percentage because you believe save percentage is a poor indicator of a goalie's performance, then you go on to say quality starts is better- despite it being based on a goalie'a save percentage. Quality starts also measures the goalie's performance relative to the league average and not his own, thus isn't even that great of a tool for measuring individual consistency. Also I didn't use a small sample size when measuring STdev, I took every game each goalie started between this season and last, which accounts for half of Mrazek's entire NHL career. Cutting out isolated games with this sample size doesn't skew the mean or the std much at all. Over that period 68% of Mrazek's games are within .985 and .825, which is a wide distribution, and the very definition of inconsistent. 68% of Holtby's games were in a much narrower window, and more tightly hugging his average.

Standard deviation is a good measurement of consistency, no? Taking Mrazek's numbers in games he started compared to Holtby's: Mrazek: average save % since Jan 1st: .900/ Standard deviation: .099 Holtby average save % since Jan 1st: .910/ Standard deviation: .046 Even if you go all the way back to the beginning of last year Mrazek's stdev is .08, still almost double what Holtby's is.

I disagree that he's been playing well. He's had flashes of brilliance in almost every game he's played, but that doesn't negate the soft goals he's given up (and he's given up many). Right now Mrazek is 29th in save percentage and 33rd in goals against. He's played 7 more periods than Howard has thus far so they're workload isn't all that dissimilar. Meanwhile Howard leads the league in both categories. The main objective for the Wings over these 82 games is getting into the playoffs, not gift-wrapping starts to an inconsistent goalie based on how he played last year, or at Juniors, or during that one period last week. Until Mrazek can prove he's ready for those kind of numbers, a balance between starts is only appropriate, and if one goalie falters the other should theoretically be ready to take the lead, as it was last year. The debate from the pov from a lot of posters here is whether Mrazek should get more starts than he's currently getting. In light of the above I think a more appropriate question would be should Jimmy be getting more starts, and I think if he continues to play well they should go back to a 50/50 scenario, then eventually to a clear cut number 1, provided one of the goalies proves they can handle the workload.

I'd personally rather back the goalie with the better goals against and save percentage, especially when hes leading the league in both categories.

Mrazek has only himself to blame for his numbers. Lets not deflect his performance and blame coaching and days off. Besides, if Mrazek is unable to get into a rhythm if he has a couple days off between games, frankly he shouldn't be a number 1. Having said that, the team in front of him is really leaving him hanging tonight.

There's also a certain amount of time needed to properly cool everything down and sequentially freeze the surface to be playable. Sometimes Ken and Mickey have pointed out how choppy the ice gets at other arenas when the Wings are playing the night after a basketball game or concert. But who knows, maybe the technology has advanced enough to make this a nonissue. Personally, I'd rather not risk it, particularly because I'm not a basketball fan and wouldn't be getting anything out of the Pistons being in LCA other than more traffic and potentially poorer ice conditions.
