2/10 GDT : Ottawa Senators at Red Wings, 7:00 EST

As far as first period powerplays go, I feel like this one is going to be key. Wings have awesome pressure right now, and to score on this powerplay could really cement the tone they've set for the rest of the game.

9 (NINE!) player trade involving Phanuef

I would. Having a chance to potentially lead the "Maple Leaf Revolution" which incidentally is also his hometown team and the most popular franchise in hockey's biggest country, and make a s*** ton of money doing it? (and maybe also have Matthews to play alongside next year)

    ROY according to LGW

The NHL Rookie of the Year according to LGW Because we're less biased than the NHL Here are some of the candidates: Artemi Panarin Like the on-ice version of the date-rape drug, Panarin has quickly made a name for himself helping Kane score. He currently leads NHL rookies in GOALS, ASSISTS, and POINTS. And while he's only one goal ahead of Larkin for the rookie lead, he's about a mile ahead of the competition in assists and also points. He's also leading the league in power play points. In short, the guy puts up numbers. Including age numbers! At 50 years old, he just barely made the rookie cut-off. Harry Potter Dylan Larkin At 19 years old, Larkin somehow convinced Holland that dropped balls weren't necessary to play in the NHL and hasn't looked back. He's been consistently among the top rookie goal scorers in the league, and locked up the rookie +/- back in November. In a season where the Wings' production has been down across the board, Larkin has also made a strong case for team MVP now that Drew Miller's season is effectively over. Max Domi NORTH AMERICAN SKATER Sufferer of perpetual forehead acne and being the son of "that one guy" as they say in Phoenix Las Vegas Portland Arizona, Max Domi has been a large reason why the Coyotes are still in the playoff hunt despite featuring on ice talent such as Shane Doan, Kyle Chupacabra, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Hanzal, and literally nobody else you've ever heard of before. He's also consistently in the running for "runner up behind Panarin" for ROY. Probably would win bro of the year award based on some of his pics. Jack Eichel Everyone's favorite rookie ginger got off to a slow start compared to those rookies who weren't supposed to win the Calder this year (see: anyone not named McDavid or Eichel) but has been as hot as that hair more recently. In fact, he and Larkin were tied for points going into the Wings/Buffalo game. However as the final buzzer went off, Larkin skated away up two more points, while Eichel skated away up one tooth. As far as draft consolation prizes go, Eichel has been solid, and more importantly, not injured. Colton Parayko At 6'6", 226lbs, this hulking defensman has made his presence known. However, in the year of the rookie, Parayko has gone largely unnoticed. He's second in +/-, leads all defensman in points, and is logging some solid minutes for the St. Louis Blues. But because defense isn't really a thing with NHL awards, he'll probably be left off the ballot. OTHER NOTABLES: Conner McDavid! Shayne Goatheistberry or something Anthony Duclair Landon Ferraro Who will win this year??? ITS ANYONES GUESS

2/8 GDT : Florida Panthers at Detroit Red Wings, 7:30 EST

Seems kinda similar to the Miller hit. Neither was a blindside hit and they both had enough time to brace for the impending collision and make any necessary adjustments, but in both instances their head wasn't in the right place when the hit finally came. I don't think either player explicitly targeted the head either. Abby's arms were tight to his body, he wasn't reaching out to make contact with the head, but that's the natural path his shoulder was already on. Those people who believe in players being partially responsible for their own health should be a fan of the nonsuspension.

As panarin walks up to the stage to claim his award, Larkin speeds out of nowhere and swipes it away. Excellent demonstration of the Finders Keepers Act.

Its close (depending on exactly when you want to cherry pick the numbers from) but still not as high as what he's scoring at now, and that period last year during his best stretch of hockey is also a smaller sample size than now. ~1.2p/g based on my calculations from mid November through February last year, compared to this year where he's currently at 1.36 for the whole season (October through now). Even if it was dead even, though, I still don't think its fair to Panarin to discount his contributions to those point totals, which you seem to be in agreement with me about. Its also comparing Kane's absolute best 3 month stretch from last year and ignoring any slumps he had, to this year's best and slumps and everything in between, which isn't an entirely fair comparison. If we looked at Kane's best three month stretch of this year and compared it to the aforementioned best three month stretch from last year, this year's three-month-best p/g is 1.46 from October through December, which is even more outrageous. But either way, I don't think this is something that will be considered too deeply when they decide on a rookie of the year. Point total is extremely heavily favored when they make their decisions, particularly if the player is a forward.

The issue with saying Panarin's point totals are only as high as they are because he's playing with Kane is Kane has never in his career scored at the rate he's scoring now. He's played with Toews, Hossa, Sharp and many other guys over the years and nobody has set Kane up at the rate he's scoring now. Maybe some of that is Kane rising to the next level and I would agree with that to an extent. But you can't discount Panarin and say the kid is essentially freeloading off Kane's numbers. Panarin is an active participant in all those points and that assist column has been well earned thus far. Also it's not a good argument to bring forth because if it applies to Panarin playing with Kane, than it also applies to Larkin playing with (not as good but still pretty good) Zetterberg and Abdelkader. Fans of Domi want nothing more than for the committee to embrace the argument you're suggesting because Domi is on a line with Duclair (another rookie) and Hanzal, which is quite benign compared to Zetterberg, Abdelkader, Kane, etc. So if we're going to give Larkin a 15 point handicap on Panarin cuz he plays with Kane, then Domi getting a 3 point handicap on Larkin is just as justified.

I wouldn't call it getting robbed. Panarin is absolutely lighting it up in Chicago.

    Flyers/Penguins Winter Classic 2011....I mean 2017

I'm officially at the point where these things don't excite me anymore. Even if the Wings were playing next year I just don't see myself getting pumped over them. Which is a shame cuz ir was the best thing to happen to hockey for a while. At least someone's making a ton of money off them still.

2/6 GDT : New York Islanders at Red Wings, 7:30 EST

I think it was Edmonton that exploited this back in the 80s because their chances of scoring 4 on 3 were much better than 5 on 4, so when they got a power play someone would goon it up and get the coincidental minors to make it 4 on 3, and raise their odds at a goal.

    New NHL website design....

It's kinda funny how the public response typically is negative when the NHL updates their website. Each time it's updates the majority of people hate it. It makes me wonder what the current response would be if the NHL reverted to the web design they had back in 2005. But I hate it lol

I think Larkin has a lot of arguments going for him, for sure. If the voters are willing to look at a multitude of evidence (some if it perhaps a bit complex) instead of just point totals, and Larkin can close the gap a bit on points and perhaps take the goal scoring lead, he def has a legit shot.

    ROY according to LGW

Unfortunately the one with the highest points often ends up winning it, regardless of what the actual criteria should be (same with Norris for that matter). The only time the top rookie scorer hasn't won the Calder in recent history, its been a defensman or a goalie (good news for Panarin) to win it. You have to go back to 1998-99 when Chris Drury won the Calder to find the last forward to win without leading the rookie class in points.

I agree. Larkin could dominate the fancy stats department and I don't think it would weight that heavily in his favor. Fancy stats are still a new phenomenon and a lot of people are still phobic about it. Points and goals and assists are easy numbers, universally accepted. They'll go farther in a vote of who's best.

Just based on eyeballing them I really think Helm is (or was) the faster skater. Today, though, Larkin might have the advantage.

Amusing stories you have heard or lived.

As promised: It was back in high school and there was a blood drive going on. I signed up to give blood during my 4th hour so I would have a valid excuse to get out of my English class and roll straight into lunch. I went down to the room where they were all set up and gave blood rather uneventfully. I ended up with a nice bruise on my arm and because I had two hours of art in the afternoon, I figured that holding my blood-giving arm up to paint for two hours wasn't a good idea (but really I just didn't feel like going in). So I decided to skip my afternoon classes and went home and took a nice nap on the couch. I woke up really groggy a couple hours later, feeling like I had to pee like crazy. I got up and made my way to the bathroom, but when I got there I briefly forgot why I was there. I stood around for a couple seconds wondering why I wasn't still napping on the couch when I suddenly surmised that if I came to the bathroom I probably had to poop. So I went to the toilet and stood in front of it like I was about to sit down on it and lost my train of thought again. When I recovered I remembered I had to pee and so i started peeing. It wasn't until I felt the warmth in my crotch and down my leg did I realize something wasn't right. I looked down and I still wasn't facing the toilet. And my pants were still up. And in the time it took me to put two and two together I had emptied my bladder.
