Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted May 29, 2007 The results of the SCF game 1 have been put up on yahoo sports homepage- and get this- not just the nhl homepage. Usually (always) its nba nfl mlb stuff, and with nba playoffs also going on, and the nfl player's death this weekend (apparently he drowned) i was incredibly shocked to see hockey on their main page. But just to keep this thread from dying in 10 minutes and give it actual discussion meaning, what do you guys think of how the media exposes nhl to us. I'm sure the topics been beaten to death already, but i really am excited about yahoo sports finally caving in (if just this once) so i had to spread the news http://sports.yahoo.com/
vangvace 12 Report post Posted May 29, 2007 Made MSN too... NHL is mentioned 3 times in ESPN the magazine. (Check out the last page hilarious use of Red Wings and the Queen of England) Always good to see good NHL press. On a serious note though... two labor disputes and constant rule changes have hurt greatly in helping getting the media to by off on the game...
martyrme19 73 Report post Posted May 29, 2007 The NHL is publicized terribly to the american market. I see inklings of improvement, but there is a lot of room to grow. First off, we need a complete overhaul of broadcasters of the NHL that present the games to the american public. Copy what the NFL does, they use articulate, ex football players that are big and beefy and bring the appearance of toughness that football exemplifies right to the viewers home before the game even starts. They are edgy, comical, in touch with todays youth, and knowledgable. Even the older guys they use that might not have even had a career are still rugged enough to pull this off. Hockey doesnt have this. I'll give you two names right now that fit this bill, Brett Hull, and Don Cherry. Everyone else needs to go. Disagree? well you're wrong. even if you think Cherry is an *******, or a little crazy, thats what the public responds to. People will watch him if they love him, but even more if they hate him. I applaud ABC for bringing him to the american market although i didnt get to witness any of his games myself. Another guy that they need to show case more is roenick. Guys like these. Im sorry, but the little weasel Darren Pang...******* PANG....needs to go. I dont want someone that looks like they get 3 wedgies a day from the stations interns bringing my beloved sport to the public. One thing i'm hoping is that with all of the excessive trouble that football players and basketball players have been having with the police, some family tradionalists will say to hell with those sports and find hockey to be more appealing since those instances are few and far between. (and ya, for those of you who are about to say that it happens in hockey too we just dont hear about it, you know damn well it is no where nearly as current in hockey than those sports. Besides, Belfour is expected to retire soon.)

Any time I say my son plays hockey, the comment I hear is "that's such a violent sport". To the baseball fans I always say, What about the ordered throws at a guy's head because the other pitcher did that to your team? That's not violent?? Guest jaytan Report post Posted May 29, 2007 Well, they actually mentioned the score during the news update on the local Portland/Vancouver, WA talk station I was listening to this morning. The guy said something like, "It's the Finals now, so we've got to talk about hockey." Several times during the playoffs, they didn't even give a score, yet got into somewhat in-depth discussions about college and minor league baseball and Division I-AA football. Kp-Wings 3 Report post Posted May 29, 2007 Roenick will eventually be a broadcaster once he finally decides to hang up his skates. I love the guy, as he has a great personality, but I think his time has probably come. I really don't see any teams taking a risk on him this year.
GoHabs007 0 Report post Posted May 29, 2007 (edited) I think the first thing the NHL needs to do is change their advertising policy. They had tons of great commercials this year, but they were only aired during hockey games. I never once saw an NHL commercial during another sporting event. I mean, the people seeing the NHL commercials now are already watching! They're not bringing anyone new into the fold by preaching to the choir! Get some ads on NBC during Notre Dame football and the Sunday Night NFL game. Pay some cable providers to put on commercials during SportsCenter. Pony up and put some ads on during PrimeTime TV. RedRockit 0 Report post Posted May 29, 2007 A topic right up my PR alley, and I don't know I've time just now to give it the consideration it deserves, here goes my quick tuppence: Hockey needs a marketable superstar. He doesn't have necessarily to be The Second Coming of The Great One, just to be PR-friendly. EVERYONE was a Bulls fan when Jordan, Pippen, and even *gasp* Rodman were hanging out in ChiTown. It wasn't ONLY MJ's amazing skills, it was the never-ending pool of stories to be told about that team. Journalists require two things: something to write about, and something to write about that won't bore their readers senseless. Scandal is great in these days when respectable news outlets have to battle yellow journalism for readership-age. I may be stretching here (but I don't THINK so), but I'll compare our sport to figure skating: it took a HUGE-- cannot stress enough just how huge-- ratings leap after the Tonya Harding hit on Nancy Kerrigan. Heinous as that event was, it was the best thing that happened to figure skating as a marketable sport. Almost overnight, even prof skating developed numbers on telly ratings, it was an amazing period for FS. Not so much anymore, just try to find USFSA anything on ESPN or ESPN2. Horrible as it sounds, it took the Harding scandal to draw attention to the sport. Now, I'm not suggesting seriously here that, in the best interests of our sport, that someone should kneecap Pronger. I wouldn't do that. I wouldn't pay anyone to do that. And if I did, I certainly wouldn't leave a paper trail. Or witnessess. Of course, I haven't thought about this at all!. I think the first thing the NHL needs to do is change their advertising policy. They had tons of great commercials this year, but they were only aired during hockey games. I never once saw an NHL commercial during another sporting event. vangvace 12 Report post Posted May 31, 2007 Woo hoo I just saw two commercials involving hockey on TV. and not during a game either. The first was during a comcast commercial and it showed the Winged wheel a few times. The second was for AHL season tickets.

I actually saw a few VS ones, once on Nickelodeon at about 3pm, I was at my cousins daycare and me and a 3 year old got very excited at seeing it haha. But I have seen them on other channels not during games (not often but like 3-4 times)
vangvace 12 Report post Posted June 4, 2007 DETNEWS Blacked out in the Big Easy Hockey fans in New Orleans were shut out from watching Game 3. NBC affiliate WDSU elected to broadcast "The Children's Miracle Network" fundraiser instead. Numerous bars across the city received requests from disgruntled hockey fans, who couldn't find the game. Trouble was, many of the bars couldn't find it either, even some with satellite dishes. WDSU had no comment because a programming director was not available. Although New Orleans is not considered a traditional hockey market, it's the latest blow to the NHL's attempt to expand its market. NBC dropped its coverage of Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals between Ottawa and Buffalo just as the game was going into overtime to instead broadcast the Preakness Stakes. The end of Ottawa's 3-2 victory was broadcast instead on Versus, the league's main cable rightsholder that reaches far fewer homes than NBC. Man NHL just can't get a break on NBC

I don't see this as much of a development. However, other sites that have been mentioned, on the other hand, are a surprise.
