NeverForgetMac25 483 Report post Posted August 7, 2007 What I'm talking about is having a guy (or 2) who can "watch over" our star guys, & if need be stand up for them - rather having them having to fight their own fights...I'm happy to see guys like Dats, & Hank play agressive hockey, but when it comes down to it they aren't capable of handling guys like May, Tootoo, Avery, Hartnell, etc etc - this is where a guy like Asham may be of value...IMHO Norton useless both as a player, & as a fighter. He's not the type of guy we need; Asham does have some ability to play the game @ the NHL level. As for the "chip on the shoulder" - both Maltby, & Draper are fine examples. These 2 were much more agressive/chippy when either McCarty, or Kocur lined up with them (they too were younger). Now who's out there with them? Kopecky? Hudler? Ellis? Not really intimidating types are they? The only time Maltby (or many of the Red Wings for that matter) gets his nose dirty is when there's a ref/linesman standing between him, & his opponent. You know my point of view, & I know yours...Lets just say we agree to disagree on certain points This issue is like -----> Looks like will have to, because I don't see this as the solution that will put the Wings over the top. Simple as that. Also, I agree that this whole topic is like beating a dead horse. Nice animated gif.
GMRwings1983 8,794 Report post Posted August 7, 2007 I think that we should sign Peter Worrell. After all, he's close friends with Andreas Lilja and probably still has his driver's license.
YoungGuns1340 1 Report post Posted August 7, 2007 (edited) Asham is a guy Holland should have signed instead of Maltby...As for the cheapshots you've mentioned above - how many have been thwarted by having a tuff guy around?...I watch my fair share of Leaf games, & for many years they've carried dedicated tuff guys like Domi, & Belak - plus they have some of their top players such as McCabe, & Kubina (& in the past Clark) whom are capable of dropping the gloves to protect a teammate - something guys like Cleary, Franzen, Maltby, Chelios, etc etc won't do - well maybe Lilja If carrying a guy whom is capable of protecting/standing up for a teammate is considered a waste of a roster spot then why do knowledgable color commentators like Mickey Redmond say otherwise? If anyone knows it's Mickey Exactly.....What good was that 5 min pp when Pronger rammed Homer's head into the glass? We didn't score now did we I would've rather seen Pronger's face bloodied; folks who haven't played any organised hockey don't realise how an act of standing up for a teammate can change the mood on the bench. 1. Asham wouldve cost twice as much as Maltby. 2. What value Asham brings to the organization as fighter/tough guy, Maltby brings to the organization by being a face of the Red Wings that people from the past decade recognize. 3. Asham wouldve cost twice as much as Maltby. If the Red Wings had more offense, Id be all for jettisoning Sammy in favor of Asham, but Detroit needs all the offense they can get right now, and that is far more important to winning the games that get us into the playoffs than having Asham is. Although, I wouldnt be surprised to see Lapointe back in a Wings jersey at the deadline. Edited August 7, 2007 by YoungGuns1340
Opie 308 Report post Posted August 7, 2007 How is being a face people recognize going to put pucks in the back of the net or provide toughness. I am not saying Asham is great or should have been on this team, but your argument lacks any logic. When I say logic I am not calling you stupid or anything, using the word logic from philosophy class, you know like this: All trolls are green Hank is a Troll Therefore Hank is green. Sorry hank not calling you a troll just the name that popped into my head!
Heaton 1 Report post Posted August 7, 2007 How do you know what price tag Asham has? Right now he's still waiting by the phone; might be a relatively inexpensive pick-up since training camp opens in 5 weeks If he were inexpensive he wouldn't still be waiting by the phone.
