WhiteLightning91 105 Report post Posted October 9, 2007 (edited) Anyone have an explanation as to why we are experiencing the complete opposite problem this season as we did last season? Last season our power play, well, sucked, but for some reason this season it is firing on all cylinders. Now this season our 5 - 5 play, well, sucks, where as last year it was the only way we could score. What is the dealio??? Avalanche Warning 0 Report post Posted October 9, 2007 Is it me or does Detroit generate almost all of their offense (even strength or powerplay ) by Lidstrom spanking it from the point and the Wings looking for rebounds?
theman19 47 Report post Posted October 9, 2007 it's just you. Zetterberg and Datsyuk's wizardry account for a good bit too.

Avalanche Warning 0 Report post Posted October 9, 2007 Almost all of their offense? No. But who wouldn't take advantage of the best defenseman in the NHL? Thats arguable. Players like Pronger , Blake and Neidamayer can put up the points and lay the body..I have NEVER seen Lidstrom throw a check. He's one of the greatest defensemen to ever play the game , but thats one weakness in his game.

Lidstrom is, by definition, the best defenseman in the NHL.

Weakness? not really... throwing hits isn't an aspect of Lidstrom's game but he is better than anyone else positionally and he can get the same job done with his stick. Was Patrick Roy a lesser goalie just because Vernon kicked his ass? I wouldn't say so

I don't think I've ever seen a more inane comment on these boards. Playoff doom doesn't bring the Conn Smythe, champ.
redwinger4747 6 Report post Posted October 9, 2007 (edited) We know that Lids isnt physical, but that "dooms" us?? That statement is nothing short of retarted. Pronger getting suspended twice in the playoffs is soo much better. Lidstrom has a ******* Conn Smythe. Remember what that means? Playoff MVP? Oh Yeah, thats right. nuff said Edited October 9, 2007 by redwinger4747

seeinred 1,488 Report post Posted October 9, 2007 Just because Lidstrom doesn't deliver skull-caving head checks like Pronger doesn't mean he's not physical. He's always in position, and plays the body when he needs to. If you really think Lidstrom's lack of open ice hits is what "dooms" the Red Wings, you've got a lot to learn about this game. Now this season our 5 - 5 play, well, sucks, where as last year it was the only way we could score. What is the dealio??? EDIT: Grammar Well, I brought this up last week and people harped on me cause it was only 1 game into the season. I felt then and still do now that the Datsyuk line, without Zetterberg on it, is pretty much like an F-1 race car with beat up, bald tires. I didn't like the Datsyuk, Franzen, Homer line and I still don't. I'm one of the crazies here that doesn't see Franzen as a top line winger yet. And now he's hurt. We have to face facts. We're a pure talented sniper away from having 2 legitimate scoring lines. What we have now is DZH line and if its broken up we have 2 lines with unbelievable centers and decent wingers, Homer being the best of the bunch. Bottom line is that I thought we'd have trouble at even strength and so far its going just like I thought it would, with Datsyuk doing miraculous work out there and nobody being able to finish unless Z and Lids are out there with him. We're a one-trick pony right now and that's not going to cut it. And Franzen coming back will help but it won't be enough. Right now we have about 3-4 guys we're hoping and praying might get 15-20 goals (I wouldn't count on Clearly notching 20 this year, Sammy maybe) when really what we need is one guy who is a lock for 30+ from the wing. NeverForgetMac25 483 Report post Posted October 9, 2007 Thats arguable. Lidstrom racks up the points but his lack of physicality dooms the Wings come playoff time. Anyone that feels Lidstrom's lack of physicality dooms the Wings come playoff time doesn't know the first thing about this game. Sidenote: D*mn its a good thing the Wings won those cups in '97, '98 and '02 before Lidstrom got on the Wings. Otherwise the Wings wouldn't have been able to "overcome" Lids' lack of physicallity. Wait a minute............
WhiteLightning91 105 Report post Posted October 9, 2007 Can we get back to the actual discussion that this thread is intended for guys??? You're only giving into what the troll wants when you continue to debate him/her... As for those who say its only 3 games into the season, thats the exact same response we were given last year. "Well, its only 3 games into the season" Next thing you know, its January and we still didn't have it figured out.
toby91_ca 620 Report post Posted October 9, 2007 Physicality is probably an area that Lidstrom lacks and it would probably make him that much better or at least more exciting ot watch, however, you gotta think that his style of play is what has kept him able to miss very few games in his career and has enabled him to continue to play at such a high level as he ages. If he was a much more physical defensemen, injuries probably would start catching up to him by now, which would diminish his other skills and at worst, he could be retired. So, when I think about it, I'll take his current style of play thanks, just ensure you have other bruisers on the blueline.
VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted October 9, 2007 The 5-on-5 does concern me. The young guys are not playing as well as everyone had hoped. I don't understand why, exactly. Cleary, Drake, Draper, etc. should be scoring, or at least getting close. After all, our new style of play supposedly leads to goals. It certainly does seem like we only have two good lines, and the wingers (except for Homer) aren't good enough. Hopefully things improve.
