mmorland 16 Report post Posted November 7, 2007 Melrose made a public apology for his comments about the New Jersey Devils arena/outside of it, stating: "beautiful new building" but added, "Don't go outside if you have a wallet or anything else, because the area around the arena is just horrible." NJ gets a bad rap like Detroit, so I can understand why people were bothered by his comments. *shakes head* oh Melrose... http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=3097823
mmorland 16 Report post Posted November 7, 2007 I feel he can say whatever he wants, doesn't mean he'll be the most popular guy though.
WhiteLightning91 105 Report post Posted November 7, 2007 Melrose hit the nail right on the head when he said that. I've walked through Newark and it is an absolute ghetto. The Mayor should take this as a wake up call and realize what a dump of a city Newark is presently, much like the city of Detroit.
PROBIE4PREZ 58 Report post Posted November 7, 2007 thats some funny s***. I read last year that Camridge New Jersey was the #1 place for violence and crimes. How far apart of these two cities?
hillbillywingsfan 794 Report post Posted November 7, 2007 i thought the arena was in East Rutherford. but i guess its all the same. its one big pile of sewer.
auxlepli 17 Report post Posted November 7, 2007 This is what gets me. The area around Ford Field is praised in an SI football article, but the area around JLA is derided most of the time. I realize there is a bit of difference between the two, but the article mentioned walking to Greektown Casino from Ford Field, that's a bit of a hike. Yet the People Mover goes from JLA right to the casino. Plus there's the beautiful riverfront at JLA. Shuttles to just about anywhere fans could want to go. It's troublesome sometimes, but it's also fun too. It's a great way to meet people.
Icer 0 Report post Posted November 7, 2007 thats some funny s***. I read last year that Camridge New Jersey was the #1 place for violence and crimes. How far apart of these two cities? I think you mean Camden, NJ. Camden is across the river from Philadelphia. Newark is closer to NYC. They're about 2 hours apart. Both are ghetto, though. But other parts of NJ are great. Princeton, Summit, Morristown, Cape May. Lots and lots of great little towns.
edicius 3,269 Report post Posted November 7, 2007 Melrose hit the nail right on the head when he said that. I've walked through Newark and it is an absolute ghetto. The Mayor should take this as a wake up call and realize what a dump of a city Newark is presently, much like the city of Detroit. Exactly, I'd never normally side with Melrose...but he was 100% right on this one. Newark is an absolute hole and I refuse to go there unless I absolutely have to. I have no qualms about walking through Downtown Detroit these days, day OR night. But Downtown Newark? I have enough problem passing through that s***hole in the daytime. I actually got lost there at night one time in my car and I was afraid for my life. It is ranked at #22 on the listing of most dangerous cities in the US (mind you, Detroit is #2) However, considering NJ Transit pretty much drops you off right at the arena, I wouldn't mind going to see a game or two...that is, if the cheapest tickets weren't $65-$70 each. Blech. I ain't paying $140 plus train fare to go see a Devils game. And hillybilly, the old arena was in East Rutherford (the Continental Airlines Arena at the Meadowlands), the new one is in Newark. But other parts of NJ are great. Princeton, Summit, Morristown, Cape May. Lots and lots of great little towns. Hey, I live just outside Morristown! And I work in Madison, another nice little town. Icer 0 Report post Posted November 7, 2007 Hey, I live just outside Morristown! And I work in Madison, another nice little town. My daughter was born in Morristown and my wife worked in Madison. We lived in Somerville. We moved back to Michigan to be closer to family but I miss New Jersey all the time.
RedWingsFanatic 4 Report post Posted November 7, 2007 Yikes. I think I'm going to have to side with the minority here. I don't like those comments. If Melrose had said anything even close to that about Detroit, I think a lot of people would have a much bigger problem with it. His comments just sort of reek of arrogance, but that's just me. seeinred 1,488 Report post Posted November 7, 2007 Barry Melrose is an idiot and I am by no means a fan of him, but who really cares about this comment? This fake outrage by people nowadays really pisses me off.
Guest GordieSid&Ted Report post Posted November 7, 2007 IMO this world we live in today has become way too "P.C."; can't say anything, or have an opinion on anything without a pre-written apology, & tears welling-up in your eyes :nonono: Couldn't agree more. I'm hardly one for being PC around here so go figure that I would agree with your statement. Frankly, if Melrose thinks its a s***hole, he doesn't have to say it to save himself grief but in reality, it doesn't make what he said untrue. The truth hurts and when people know it they can't do anything else but point the finger at somebody else and make them apologize for pointing out how s***ty their situation is. Barry should not have apologized. I wouldn't hold it against anybody for speaking the truth.
auxlepli 17 Report post Posted November 7, 2007 Never been to Newark, but Prudential has to be better than Continental. If the Rock has any businesses around it, the area around it is better too regardless of what people think about Newark. There is NOTHING around Continental except a big ass parking lot. It was the worst place I've ever seen an NHL game.

wingsrock34 0 Report post Posted November 8, 2007 http://newarknj.areaconnect.com/crime/comp...troit&s2=MI Hey people take a look at the facts. This link above is a graph that show the Newark crime rate vs Detroit. The Detroit crime is higher but keep in mind population, if Newark had as many people as Detroit thier crime rate would sky rocket over ours On a side note i think you should all take a look at the PBS doc. Streetfight it is about Newark and their former mayor and how the city is a joke thats for sale http://www.pbs.org/pov/pov2005/streetfight/about.html So Newark is a s*** HOLE AND MELROSE IS RIGHT
