toby91_ca 620 Report post Posted November 10, 2007 This is a "did you know" thing. In Gordie Howe's close to 1,800 games played (regular season), he's actually only registered a Gordie Howe hattrick once.
FinRedWing 172 Report post Posted November 10, 2007 Interesting, didn't know that. Should Stanley Cup winning goals be called "Uwe Krupp-goals" then?

I hope not Let's just forget about that guy! God no! I hope not Let's just forget about that guy! I feel ashamed posing that sentence in a Howe thread! Good thing I was refering to that other dude. auxlepli 17 Report post Posted November 10, 2007 Yeah, I did. This subject just came up like a week or so ago. Bob the Badger maintains that he didn't even register one. Even if it's one or none, how did that myth start I wonder.

Wings_Dynasty 267 Report post Posted November 11, 2007 That is very interesting. Makes you wonder how and why the phrase was coined. Probably because he did socre goals, make plays, and fight. Very few players can do all three nowadays. So, who else could they have named it after? He had the goals and points records and he was a feared tough-guy. Pretty strange, huh? Gordie who? You blasphemer!
skacore 2 Report post Posted November 11, 2007 Howe seldomly fought...he played a tough brand of hockey but more so with his elbows and stick than his fists....from what I've been told, so it's believable that he didn't have many goal/assist/fight games when your only in a 1-2 fights a year

Yes, Howe played a rough style of hockey, but that doesn't account in how and why this term came to be. Anyone know the story? Edited November 11, 2007 by BringHomeTheCup! "squish, squish" was the word used I believe.
Stu in Israel 0 Report post Posted November 11, 2007 That is very interesting. Makes you wonder how and why the phrase was coined. Very strange indeed! Altho (intentional misspelling!), as one poster noted, he was great at using his elbows in those corner scrums. I began watching the Wings in the "Howe era," and distinctly remember him saying that he doesn't fight because "scoring hurts them more!"

Rob the Badger 0 Report post Posted November 11, 2007 I was reading an article on the WHA and they suggested that the term had more to do with his play in the W than in the N. I'm not sure if it's true or not, since I'm only in the 30's and never saw Gordie play in a real game. The only times I've seen him on the ice were as promotional/gimmicky appearances in the IHL. BlueMonk 102 Report post Posted November 11, 2007 The myth that Howe was a feared fighter has pretty much been debunked by now. The Lou Fontinato fight seems to have taken on a larger-than-life quality over the past 50 years. It's funny, but the word last night that he had only had one Gordie Howe Hat Trick came as a surprise to me for a different reason: I had heard he never had one! So apparently he had one more than I thought he did.
RedWings Gone Wild 6 Report post Posted November 11, 2007 You blasphemer! I know, I almost stopped myself, now I feel guilty. Anywho, I had heard that Gordy only did it once on a few occasions (but hell, if you already have a goal and an assist in a night... then you've already done your job, let someone else fight). I think this is one of those little tidbits of info that is mentioned at least once per season during Wings games (anytime anyone is close to the hat trick basically). Rob the Badger 0 Report post Posted November 11, 2007 I have heard that he never had one in the NHL but has had a few in the WHA. I'm not sure which is fact and which is fiction... and it's damn hard to find the facts on line.
