Interesting,didn't know that.

Should Stanley Cup winning goals be called "Uwe Krupp-goals" then?

 God no! I hope not :P Let's just forget about that guy!

:hehe: I feel ashamed posing that sentence in a Howe thread! Good thing I was refering to that other dude.

That is very interesting. Makes you wonder how and why the phrase was coined.

Probably because he did socre goals, make plays, and fight. Very few players can do all three nowadays. So, who else could they have named it after? He had the goals and points records and he was a feared tough-guy.

This is a "did you know" thing.

In Gordie Howe's close to 1,800 games played (regular season), he's actually only registered a Gordie Howe hattrick once.

I actually did know that. It was brought to my attention a few years ago. Pretty strange, huh?

Gordie who? :sly:

You blasphemer! :D

Howe seldomly fought...he played a tough brand of hockey but more so with his elbows and stick than his fists....from what I've been told, so it's believable that he didn't have many goal/assist/fight games when your only in a 1-2 fights a year

It still doesn't make any sense. Yes, Howe played a rough style of hockey, but that doesn't account in how and why this term came to be.

Anyone know the story?

True, but one of the all-time great hockey fight stories is the retelling of Howe obliterating Toronto tough guy Lou Fontinato.

"squish, squish" was the word used I believe.

Very strange indeed! Altho (intentional misspelling!), as one poster noted, he was great at using his elbows in those corner scrums.

I began watching the Wings in the "Howe era," and distinctly remember him saying that he doesn't fight because "scoring hurts them more!"

I was reading an article on the WHA and they suggested that the term had more to do with his play in the W than in the N. I'm not sure if it's true or not, since I'm only in the 30's and never saw Gordie play in a real game. The only times I've seen him on the ice were as promotional/gimmicky appearances in the IHL.

The myth that Howe was a feared fighter has pretty much been debunked by now. The Lou Fontinato fight seems to have taken on a larger-than-life quality over the past 50 years.

It's funny, but the word last night that he had only had one Gordie Howe Hat Trick came as a surprise to me for a different reason: I had heard he never had one! So apparently he had one more than I thought he did.

I know, I almost stopped myself, now I feel guilty. Anywho, I had heard that Gordy only did it once on a few occasions (but hell, if you already have a goal and an assist in a night... then you've already done your job, let someone else fight). I think this is one of those little tidbits of info that is mentioned at least once per season during Wings games (anytime anyone is close to the hat trick basically).
