Lecavalier almost a Leaf in 2001

Smart move by the Bolts to keep Vinny

Yup. You can't replace the kind of skills he brings to the table. He's easily the front runner for the Hart so far this season.

But I'm sure T.B. could use a dman like Kaberle on their blueline.

Of course, Vinny wasn't half the player in 2001 that he is today. Now, I would assume a much bigger package and a potential Norris winner would have to be included to pluck Lecavailer from T.B.

Actually I think he was going to be traded to New Jersey for Scott Stevens!! That was in 1993ish!!

I remember reading in Blood Feud that the Wings were interested in Roy. Ultimately management felt that his antics in Montreal and the recent decline in his game wasn't enough to pursue him. The Wings were also pretty comfortable with Vernon and Osgood. I do remember Scotty saying they probably should of traded for him.

Exactly right.. Plus he's the total package of a hockey player.. And it's great to see him fight when he needs to.. I think it was the words of Shane O'Brien " Your a killer Vinny your a killer"

Yeah one of those woulda, coulda, shoulda lines.

We still won 3 Cups, and Roy only won 2 in Colorado. I'm not convinced we would have done any better with him between the pipes then we did with Vernon, Osgood, and Hasek.

Roy was outstanding, but as we know first hand, he could crash and burn about as many times as he won big.

I depends on who we would of traded, but the Canadiens traded Patrick Roy and Mike Keane to the Avalanche for Andrei Kovalenko, Martin Rucinsky and Jocelyn Thibault. Seriously, what a steal that was. Roy was worth more than both those players...but Keane too? Of course, Keane was chased out because he refused to learn French.

Spare me, there are trillions of these 'trades' that we never even hear of. The only reason we are reading this now is because it involves the almighty Leafs, and what they could have had, as if its some kind of injustice that the trade never actually happened.

Actually, this story has made the rounds quite a few times in the last year or so. Not sure why Sportsnet is writing about it now, other than to speculate the "shoulda, woulda, coulda" of what would it be like today if he were in Toronto. No harm in that.

I'm trying to remember, but wasn't there an almost-deal here locally that involved the Pistons and the 76ers about Iverson a few years back? It was close enough that the Pistons already had a plane in Philly? I'm trying to remember it, not sure if that's right or not.

I think the Wings would have at least made 2 more SCF appearances. Even if you don't believe Roy was a better goalie than Dom, Ozzie and Vernon (or as in my case, if you do), there is no denying a few things, of course all of this is dependent on who the Wings would have given up to get Roy.

1. If the Wings get Roy, the Avs don't get Roy and Keane, two large pieces to their Cup team in 95-96.

2. With out Roy, the Avs don't beat the Wings in any year they beat the Wings in the WCF, if they even get that far.

3. The Wings have a much better chance at the 3-peat.

4. Dom never comes to Detroit.

5. Joseph never comes to Detroit.

6. None of us have to waste years of our life debating who is better, Dom or Ozzie/Joseph/Manny?

Realistically, I don't see the Avs as any real threat without Roy. Most assuredly, Scotty wishes he made that deal.

I know, which is why its so pathetic that we are still hearing about it. Just because Lecavalier is tops in the league thus far, we have to go through the whole spiel about how he could have been a Leaf all over again. There were grumblings about a deal and it never happened. If its so interesting to talk about what would have been, why don't we hear about what would have happened if Yzerman would have gone to the Sens in the mid-90's, instead of hearing for the tenth time in the last 12 months about how the Leafs were 'oh so close' to getting a star player. Like I said before, the way they portray it on TSN and Sportsnet is like it was some cruel injustice that Vinny is not a Maple Leaf, as if they would have somehow won the cup with him. It fails to realize the Leafs would still have crappy goaltender, disgustingly overrated defense, and a weak core, a losing coach, and a numskull for a GM.

I like Dave Hodges interpretation of the Maple Leafs, they will never win because the team is arrogant (not to mention most of their fans). Players get there and think that just cause they are the Maple Leafs they are a cup contender, or that they deserve better then what they have received in the last 40 years. Its kind of like the New York Yankee's and their fans, except the Leafs actually suck.

Personally, I love seeing them lose over and over again, and I am bitter that all I hear about on TV, even out west here in Edmonton, is Leafs Pre and Post Game coverage for three days leading up to, and after a game against the Atlanta frigging Thrashers. Look, the Oilers suck, people here have realized that in the past 12 months, the Leafs suck just as badly, yet the coverage I get on TSN reports it everyday like its a new thing. Give me a break.

Uhg, end rant.

It seems to me that the Oilers are kind of like a farm system for the whole league. I realize that they got to the SCF's not to long ago... but everytime they get someone who becomes elite, they just trade them. I just don't see how they can keep getting support if they always are trading their star players just so they can get some more future talent.

Its so true...guys seem to develop nicely there and then Sather/Lowe trades them away.

Just think of the last ten years

Arnott

Weight

Guerin

Carter

Comrie

Smyth

Pronger

Now we are all waiting for Hemsky to be dumped somewhere for some 'prospects'.
