Maltby Absent From Wednesday's Practice

Bad news from Wednesday's Red Wings practice:

November 28, RedWingsCorner: No surprise, but Kris Draper (sprained knee) isn't on the ice as practice starts Wednesday. Neither is Matt Ellis (headache). Kirk Maltby isn't on the ice either for an unknown reason.

With the lack of forwards, Derek Meech is practicing up front.

Red Wings Corner blog says it's a shoulder injury and his status for Thursday is unknown -

-- Kirk Maltby (shoulder) didn't practice. His status is unknown for Thursday. Since the beginning of the 2001-02 season, Maltby has missed just three regular-season games. He has played in 430 of a possible 433 games during the five-plus season span. Maltby has appeared in 187 consecutive games.

"He's had a bit of soreness in his upper body," said Babcock. "I think he'll be fine. Malts hasn't missed one practice since I've been here. If he missed a practice, that's a bit concerning. (Athletic trainer) Piet (Van Zant) doesn't think it's a big deal."

Wednesday night update

No return call on whether the Wings will call up a forward from Grand Rapids. Perhaps Kirk Maltby (shoulder) will be ready to play Thursday.

Talk about Toronto-Native-Twins. One gets injured, drives oneself to hospital. Other sees twin get hurt. Must be hurt too. Only explination.

That would be sweet if the Wings called up Adam Keefe if Maltby is hurt. It'll be cool to see what the kid can do at the NHL level when it comes to fighting.

I've been following him lately, and he looks like he could be a good fighter someday. I almost compare him to Tie Domi, because Keefe is a small guy like Domi is, but is a hell of a fighter. Hopefully the Wings give him a chance and don't cast him aside like they did to Ryan Barnes.

I doubt the Wings will call him up this season, but it would be really great if they did. I can always be hopeful, right?
