george27 0 Report post Posted December 13, 2007 going to my first Wings game Monday vs. the Caps. my mom and i are heading up there Saturday from the Va/D.C. area, probably get there late, then spending Sun./Mon. around Michigan/CA before the game. we're kind of operating on a vague agenda, as we've never been up there. i was wondering if anyone had any suggestions about ANYTHING, particularly game days/The Joe. haha, we haven't even settled on a place to stay yet and are still on the fence Windsor vs. Detroit. so far we've talked about driving out to East Lansing/MSU as well as visiting University of Michigan (boo, no hockey games, i checked), hitting Cheli's Chili at some point, maybe Hockeytown Cafe?, Tim Horton's, maybe doing something other than eating. i heard the downtown/Comerica Park area is relatively safe, but obviously we're not planning on skipping down any dark alleys holding hands, handing out cash. but yeah, sights, hangouts, places to eat/stay, warnings - i appreciate any suggestions. we're leaving Sat., but will have internet access, so i can check the board whenever. Thanks! p.s. sure this kind of blatant nerding out is looked down upon on here, but i've been a Wings fan since i was a kid and never seen them play (i'm in my 20's). needless to say, i'm a little excited. zettermaberg 0 Report post Posted December 13, 2007 I personally think that Cobo Joe's is a must. I'm going to the Caps game as well and we're going there for their amazingly good chicken fingers and onion rings. So stop by for a pint and incredible pre-game atmosphere. Hockeytown Cafe is nice, but overrated if you ask me. The Hilton Garden Inn is a great hotel in a great location. Close to Greektown, so you can take the peoplemover to the game and still be able to walk to Cheli's/stadiums. Get off at the Cobo Hall station and exit onto Congress, then hang a left - Cobo Joe's is at the corner of Congress and 1st (I think it's first, but at any rate, you can't miss it). lets go pavel 2 Report post Posted December 13, 2007 hey, what part of VA are you from? we're in fredericksburg ... just got up to detroit to catch a game for the first time in october, so i can't offer much in the way of suggestions, but i will say the peoplemover is real quick and easy if you stay somewhere near it ... it sounds like you're driving up though, so maybe it won't matter ... anyway, enjoy the game! KevinD 1 Report post Posted December 14, 2007 (edited) the new MGM casino hotel is having a tough time selling rooms, so you may be able to get a great deal there. I know they have a shuttle to and from the game. A really cool bar that always gets overlooked is Bookies. It's on Washington in the Book tower. They also have a shuttle. (unless the kid is late like last week.) You find a bunch of the employees from the Joe at Bookies after the game. The Ferndale/Royal Oak area is good for walking-shopping-people watching. Just north of downtown. I don't care what people say, this is a great place to live. In Detroit, you are only 20 minutes away from anything and everything. Skip Windsor, you will have to deal with the Border Patrol and it may take a while to cross the border. Have Fun. k. edit:spelling Edited December 14, 2007 by KevinD

The Ferndale/Royal Oak area is good for walking-shopping-people watching. Just north of downtown. I don't care what people say, this is a great place to live. edit:spelling i heard good things from a coworker about Royal Oak, too. i really liked it when i looked it up. and people watching is always a bonus. Detroit turns sexy at night... bowchickawowow.... hmmm, just as long as it doesn't turn sexy around my mom at nite. haha. and i was stoked on the GLI and good restaurant info (plus directions!), too!
