toby91_ca 620 Report post Posted January 9, 2008 With Lidstrom apparently heading for another Norris, and the duo of Hasek and Osgood aparently heading for a Jennings (which Osgood and Mike Vernon won for the 1995-1996 season), and Datsyuk practically a lock for the Lady Byng, I really don't think ANY Red Wing will win the Selke; a Red Wing might be a nominee, but probably not the winner. They all may be the frontrunners for those awards, but by no means locks. I think the one that has the biggest edge at this point is Lidstrom, but you never know what will happen, by the end of the season, I would guess that Pronger may give him a run for it. Jennings, Hasek and Osgood will get a challenge from Luongo and maybe even Nabokov. Datsyuk will probably get a challenge from St. Louis and Alfredsson. daniel1 32 Report post Posted January 9, 2008 Depends on what you mean by "legitimate candidates." There is a pretty good chance that none of those guys are even nominated (i.e. top 3). Legitimate as in "meets all the requirements needed to win the award." Draper has won before, so it's obvious he's a "legitimate" candidate based on his PK and faceoff work (2nd in the NHL). Z is 6th overall in points (and climbing now that he's healthy again) while being defensively responsible (tied for 6th in NHL +/-), has won 376 faceoffs (14th in the NHL) and kills penalties. Datsyuk has the 3rd best plus/minus in the ENTIRE NHL (+26) and LEADS the NHL in takeaways (by a wide margin, 96 to 72)) and kills penalties while sitting at 3rd in the NHL in assists. Cleary is on pace for 30 goals and 60 points, kills penalties, can play on the checking line and is a plus 16. "The Frank J. Selke Trophy is an annual award given to the forward who best excels in the defensive aspects of the game. The winner is selected in a poll of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association at the end of the regular season." (NHL.com) Defensive aspects: PK, +/-, face-offs, takeaways, turnovers, backchecking, defensive zone coverage.
dicksmack 33 Report post Posted February 3, 2008 I think it's safe to say Pavel is a legit Selke candidate: +37, the most takeaways by a mile, relatively few giveaways (esp. for a guy who carries the puck a lot), plays the pk, backchecks tenaciously the way Hank did the past couple of years, and is trusted by Babcock to play in any and all situations. Nev 1,085 Report post Posted February 3, 2008 The Selke, like the Norris, is one of those trophies that you have to have several good seasons under your belt before you're nominated. Look at Lidstrom - is he *really* that much better in the 2nd half of his career than the 1st half? Of course not, but his 6 wins and 3 runners-up are off the back of the reputation he built through the 90s. Same goes for Datsyuk and Zetterberg. Last year the rest of the league began to notice what we've known for since his rookie year - Hank is a 2 way monster, which is why the national media is starting to talk about his being a potential Selke winner. Last year Datsyuk was 1st among forwards in plus/minus, 1st in takeaways and 7th in face-offs. I know its not a stat-driven award, but if they aren't Selke numbers, I don't know what is. So it may be another year or 2 before the national media starts to notice Datsyuk's 2-way play.
WindsorWings 0 Report post Posted February 3, 2008 I'd say Pavel's the frontrunner at this point.

Second in the league in plus-minus, first in takeaways, not only this year, but last year as well, and maybe even the year before, out on the power play, penalty kills (including 5 on 3 sometimes, which he's shown himself capable of)...how in God's name this guy shouldn't be considered is beyond me. I've been screaming for this recognition for a long time, but I always thought no one else was listening to me. Nice to know it hasn't totally fallen on deaf ears. Not taking anything away from Dats, but you don't hear many people outside of here saying he's the Selke candidate, which his defensive play has improved very much this season. When the Wings are playing you hear the announcers speaking of Zetterberg being as good defensively as he is with the puck, that may influence some writers in their votes......On the other hand, there may be split votes between Dats and Z and neither could win it. Actually, I have been hearing more and more announcers bringing up his defensive acumen. I live in NJ so I see a lot of opponents feeds of Wings games so I get a lot of opponent feeds. Datsyuk is being recognized more and more for his all around game throughout the league. Not only is he first in take-aways, top forward +/- but also leads the Wings forwards in blocked shots. I don't know that he will win it but he deserves to be a contender.

I was gonna post this too... For some reason I get 95% opponents feeds on my Centre Ice and almost without exception Pavel's (and Z's) defensive responsibility gets tossed some verbiage... I see Pavel as having a good shot at it, actually. Who's his competition?

I don't know why where you live has to do with tv coverage, I have the Center Ice package and I see the opponents feeds as well. The main thing I hear about Dats is "Guy's got the puck on a string" I hear it from Zetterburg moreso than Datsyuk. I agree with you that he should be a contender, guy has come a long way with his defense.

blues_demitra38 11 Report post Posted February 6, 2008 Amazing that this is even a possibility. Think about it, Datsyuk has a realistic shot at the Art Ross, Selke and Lady Byng award. Is there any other player in the league who can say that about themselves? Simply amazing...
