Kipper hasn't been all that great this season. Besides, goalies get injured frequently nowadays, so backups can become starters just like that. Also, it's not like every team in the league wanted Cujo that badly. What exactly were his options?

On a side note - i always love to see CuJo's mask when he goes to a new team. It looked so damn cool when it changed from Leaf blue to Wing red. Think he will throw some orange in there for the Flames? It should look pretty cool.

I think the whole point is to give Kipper a break. He's started 44 of 45 games, and must be getting a little tired. CuJo will give them a chance at winning some games while Kipper takes a breather, rather than putting in the other back-up.
