Textbook 1 Report post Posted March 2, 2008 If this had happened in game 7 of the cup finals, imagine what would happen. The NHL would be the laughingstock of the sports world. The sole fact that the officials have made decisions on critical goals in two Red Wings games this year already has many Detroit fans thinking the NHL is a laughingstock. I'm kind of hoping that happens in the cup finals now, would be a wake up call. I don't think the issue here is the officials. It's a 80+ mph slapshot that disappeared. You'd have to be lucky to have seen where it went. I don't blame the officials for missing the puck. I blame the video review policy. In a game where a goal actually matters , questionable goals could determine the outcome of a season. The video review/challenge system works in the NFL. They instated it in 1999, and a survey that year showed that 87% of fans were in favor. That's an overwhelming majority. Review NFL fans today and I bet you would get similar numbers, meaning the system is a success. If the NHL wants to attract new fans, they need to ask both the fans and the players what is wanted. I think both would favor a better video review policy - whether it be at the officials' discretion or in the form of a challenge. I don't care which one, but something, anything, is better than what we have now.
#19=Legend 29 Report post Posted March 2, 2008 Am I the only one that is not looking past the fact that there is FOUR REFS ON THE ICE!! one of them obviously did know that it must have went out because he lifted his whistle. There was no noise from the glass, it was nowhere to be seen for a few seconds.(which in any case, calls for a whistle) anyone who can honestly defend the zebras out there is kidding themselves. I never said thier job is easy, but that is as easy as they come and they f***ed up bad. End of story.
GoWings1905 2,694 Report post Posted March 2, 2008 I was sitting in the upper bowl, at the opposite end of the ice at the game last night and I could even tell from that distance the puck had hit the protective netting. Is it even possible that eight eyes at ice level could not see it? Un-freaking believable. The Red Wings lost two games in February, solely thanks to the officiating (or lack thereof). No wonder most people don't give a s*** about hockey. This league is a joke.
Rivalred 630 Report post Posted March 2, 2008 The sad part about it though, is the current rulebook okays what happened last night. http://www.nhl.com/hockeyu/rulebook/rule80.html Aflac, that is pretty interesting and thank you for posting that... But at the same time, if the Ref's lose sight of the puck aren't they suppose to call the play dead? Almost like the time a few years back when the ref was "thinking to blow the whistle" so therefore the play is dead.
Rivalred 630 Report post Posted March 2, 2008 Wah, wah, whine, whine, cry, cry. Good God with all the bitching and moaning going on in here in feel like I'm either in a nursery or an old person's home. You all get up in arms about this like it's the end of the world. The league will address this, after last night's debacle. If they don't, then they deserve to be the laughing stock of professional sports. I just find it funny how upset you all get, and from all of the posts I've read about getting tickets and such, I don't think many of you put all that much money into the team. My parents have season tickets and were at the game last night. They spend thousands, and I do mean, thousands of dollars every year on the Wings/NHL. And they weren't half as mad as some of you people. They were upset at the bad call, but they also recognized that the Wings did not play that well to begin with. And for all of you who are going to say they must not care about the team that much then, they have had season tickets since they were the "Dead Things" in the early 1980s, we go to every single game, so we are not like those people with season tickets who have them and leave the seats empty, and they have spent a TON of money on this team over the years. Keeping things in perspective does not make you any less of a fan. I assume you got nice vacation for this post...
Captain_Yzerman19 1 Report post Posted March 2, 2008 While I was watching the Pens/Sens tonight, I bitterly said when a puck hit the netting and came back down: "That's a live puck."
Rush 7 Report post Posted March 2, 2008 Still not a very good game from the Sharks standpoint. But even with their subpar performance I still feel it was more than enough to beat the Wings last night, with or WITHOUT the refs. But don't worry, regardless of the points from here till the end of the season, when you play in a division as weak as Detroit does, you could be a .500 team and still end up in the playoffs. See you guys in the postseason... hopefully not. Grats' on not getting swept by a team who only makes the playoffs by being in a so'called 'weak' division. Winning 1 out of 4 and being out-scored 17 to 8 in a seasonal series aint bad Sharkie! - If only we got points as easy from the Central as we did from San Jose this year. Don't think that all SJ fans think that. I think last year the central was pretty weak and Detroit benefited from that, but were still a solid team that should have gone all the way (and got farther than the Sharks by beating them). This year the central started out amazing, and Detroit was at the top of that heap. I saw some incredible games in the fall, and I think next year's going to be even better. And the season series between SJ and the Wings does speak for itself - no argument. The Sharks are streaky. Massively talented in fits and bursts, but not consistent.
