Detroit Red Wings (43-18-6, Previous: 4) – Mike Babcock is simply one of the best coaches in the league. He took Anaheim to Game 7 of the Cup finals his rookie year of 2003-04. After rejecting a one-year extension following his second season with the then-Mighty Ducks, Babcock replaced Dave Lewis in Detroit. He managed a number of egos and successfully navigated a transition from one era of contending Red Wings’ teams to another.
Superman54 91 Report post Posted March 4, 2008 Dallas ahead of us....yikes sure we had our slide but we had months where we were even more dominant then Dallas is right now, unfortuantly though that stuff gets ignored for some reason Dallas also blows in the playoffs....I do not agree with this
Guest CaliWingsNut Report post Posted March 4, 2008 (edited) This list makes no sense. If he is talking about job security from the coach's position, ottawa shouldn't even be on the list (much less number 9). He states for the number two coach that management has said he needs to go deep (in the playoffs) to keep his job... This is called a reporter w/ too much time on his hands after the trade deadline. CenterIce 83 Report post Posted March 5, 2008 27. Atlanta Thrashers (29-31-7, Previous: 26) – Don Waddell fired Bob Hartley after the Thrashers started 0-6 and decided to stay behind the bench since, splitting his GM role with coaching. Obviously he wants to see what’s available in the summer. An American GM probably wouldn’t do this, but with a star like Ilya Kovalchuk, wouldn’t it be interesting for someone to take a chance on, say, Igor Larionov? The rankings are based on the teams performance recently and over the year, not coaching security. The coaching thing is a little tid bit that they throw in there. Dallas ahead of us....yikes sure we had our slide but we had months where we were even more dominant then Dallas is right now, unfortuantly though that stuff gets ignored for some reason Dallas also blows in the playoffs....I do not agree with this Dallas sucking in the past playoffs has nothing to do with the rankings this week, they are a different team. They were probably the hottest team going into the deadline and they got better. I have Dal ahead of Det, because of recent play, and the only reason I rank Det high enough to be above ANA, is health. However if the Wings get healthy and don't tear it up (after a week or two, so just before the playoffs) I would see Ana, Dal, NJ ahead of the wings. Remember folks this wings team just went 2-7-1 in their last 10, by all rights they should be ranked closer to 10 than 1. IMO!!

Opie 308 Report post Posted March 11, 2008 (edited) http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/news;_ylt=Ap0L...o&type=lgns New power rankings and a blurb about how teams have adjust to deadline deals. 2. Detroit Red Wings (45-18-6, Previous: 4) – The Wings are 3-1-1 since making the minor move to pick up Brad Stuart for depth on defense. The biggest boost Detroit has received since the deadline is the return to health of several blue liners – namely Nicklas Lidstrom – with more expected back soon. I am a little bit surprised though that all these sports writers base these rankings on nothing. Look at Anaheim. I have heard several people say that Aneheim is favored to win the cup. But what is that based on? They don't have the best offense (actually they are #28 in GFA) They don't have the best defense (based of GAA) They don't have the best PK They don't have the best PP They are not the youngest team They are not the biggest team They don't have the best record They haven't won the most games They haven't lost the fewest Their recent record is not the best in the league (shut out 2 of the last 3 games) They don't have the best home record They don't have the best road record They are not injury free (Corey Perry) They don't have the best goalie (Luongo?) They don't have the best D-man (Lids) They don't have the best forwards (Pittsburgh?) So what is this based on? "Well" the sports writers say "they will be great in the playoffs, regular season means nothing". You could say that about any team. So these "predictions" are all just opinions and statistics mean nothing. There is nothing to back it up. My favorite is when they pick a number of games and say something like "Anaheim is 10-2 since so and so returned". Yea well they also went 0-6 at the end of January but we won't talk about that. San Jose has just won 9 in a row. Problem is the playoffs don't start for another month. I guess if a team is hot when the playoffs start it means something but otherwise, what they do during any 10 game stretch is meaningless. At the begining of the season Columbus was on fire as was Minnesota and Ottawa. So who really cares about some talking head's opinion because that's really all it is - an opinion. And fortuantely the Cup doesn't automatically go to the team with the most Canadians or the team that the most sports writers like.

But I think there is something to be said for the way playoff hockey is played and the type of players you need to have to play it effectively. Simply, Anaheim is built like a playoff team should be. Big, nasty, fiesty, tough, strong, skilled, experienced and they have a goalie who seems to always become superhuman when the playoffs arrive. as for the bolded part, if you were talking about the Wings our recent history would suggest we are not a team you could say will be great or insinuate that would be better come playoff time. Typically we are the best in the regular season and we falter in the playoffs, which is the exact opposite.
