WhiteLightning91 105 Report post Posted March 31, 2008 I don't remember anyone saying there shouldn't be sponsors on the boards or that arenas shouldn't have a corporate name. Imagine if the Wings got a new arena: GoDaddy! Arena. Oh the possibilities You're correct. No one has said those words in this thread, but those statements have been posted on here before. Nev 1,085 Report post Posted March 31, 2008 Meh, it was the same when games where on ESPN had to have the Flyers every single game And if you think THAT is bad, imagine if, like over here, you only got 1 free-to-air hockey game a week, on a Wednesday night. Then imagine if EVERY SINGLE WEEK the game featured the Chicago Blackhawks, cos that's what us poor UK hockey fans have had to endure this season. Go check the schedule, if Chicago were playing on a Wednesday, then they were on Channel5. And Chicago have played about 80% of the Wednesdays this season. Naturally the only time they weren't shown on a Wednesday was when they were playing the wings. The rare occasions that it wasn't the Blackhawks we got to see such great teams as the BJs (repeatedly), LA, Phoenix, Tampa Bay, Atlanta......
McCartyFanForLife 17 Report post Posted March 31, 2008 I don't have a problem with Versus showing the Pittsburgh vs New York game tonight. The only other game to choose from is Atlanta vs Tampa Bay. Wow, there is a tough decision.
Kp-Wings 3 Report post Posted March 31, 2008 (edited) They air those three teams for specific reasons. Comcast, which owns Versus, also owns the Flyers. Do the math on that one. The Penguins have Crosby, so you definitly know their going to get plenty of games. And the Rangers are... well, the Rangers. New Yorks primary teams (IE the ones that play on Manhatten Island) are always a big draw, much more so than those that play in Brooklyn, Long Island, Jersey, etc. While I don't really agree with that criteria, those are, more than likely, the reasons why those three teams get so many games picked up. Guest Hank=FutureCaptain Report post Posted March 31, 2008 Guess which teams are playing on Versus tonight? Give up yet? It's going to be Rangers vs. Penguins. Seriously, this crap needs to stop it's always those 2 teams plus the Flyers playing against each other for televised games in a three ring circus. Aren't there any other teams in the league? I'd love to see Montreal, Ottawa, New Jersey, or the Flames, Canucks, hell even the Ducks that won the Cup last year never get any airtime when they play on the east coast. I'm just annoyed at seeing these same 3 teams playing each other every other week on Versus. A little more originality would be nice for a change, especially when they played each other yesterday on NBC. Part of me does agree with you. Cause I'm also getting real sick of CONSTANT Penguins games on versus. But today I don't agree. The only other option for them would be Atlanta Vs. Tampa Bay(the 2 WORST teams in the east). I would watch Rangers and Penguins ANY DAY over a Trasher/Lightning crapfest.

But that doesn't mean they have to show those teams playing against each other. How about Flyers vs. Senators, or Rangers vs. some team out on the West coast, or Penguins vs. Sharks. Yet it's always those 3 teams playing against each other. Hell, what about the Devils? They play in that same division and never get any airtime, with some pretty good players on their team, and a great record. It's just plain idiotic.

Majsheppard 203 Report post Posted March 31, 2008 Thank you, I was going to start this thread but usually get yelled at for any glib comments. I feel like I've watched more Pens games then Wings. Get used to it because I don't think its going to change anytime soon.

auxlepli 17 Report post Posted March 31, 2008 Wow. Some of you people really need to take a class in Economics of a Capitalistic Society. THE NHL IS A BUSINESS FIRST AND FOREMOST!!! They don't care what YOU want to see. They care about the GENERAL AUDIENCE. You think tickets are expensive now. Imagine what they would be if you guys had your way where there were no corporate sponsors on the boards, none of the arenas had a corporate name, and all the teams got equal amounts of airtime on national broadcasts. The NHL would be dead! Penguins vs. Rangers = Relatively good ratings Got it? The NHL might be able to make even more money if it tried appeasing fans. That whole attracting more flies with honey than vinegar cliche. That said given any match-up the networks can potentially upset 28 other teams' fans. "You can't please all the people all the time." Still the NHL seems to be more vinegar than honey. Or maybe it's hockey fans, or NHL general managers who are never satisfied and always want to tinker with the game. Or maybe it's NHL fans who have an inferiority complex because the sport they love so passionately isn't the top-rated sport in the United States. I don't know. I don't have all the answers. But tonight's match-up, even though it's on the heels of yesterday's NBC Game of the Week, seems a trivial one to complain about.

GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted March 31, 2008 You know, I moved to New Jersey a year ago and met a Devils fan. Hopefully, one day I'm going to meet another one. That's surprising, because they always get good attendance and I've always thought they had a big fan base. Then again, it's New Jersey, and I've heard millions of rumors about that state, so I don't know truth from fiction.

Better road attendance percentages, but I think that's a product of their division. Add to it that they're fourth fiddle in the region behind both New York teams and the Flyers... Hopefully moving to downtown Newark will give a lift to attendance instead of the new stadium boost they have this year.
