wingsfan75 2 Report post Posted April 2, 2008 Definitely a good read... In another topic we were asked to choose our top 10 Wings of all time and I thought about it when someone put Lidstrom as number 2 on the list. IMO that was spot on. He was a mainstay on the ice during all the cup years. Yzerman was the leader but Lidstrom was the backbone of the team. You don't win a cup without either one but I think Lids was just as important, if not more important, to have in the line-up. Not that February's record was all due to Lidstrom being out of the lineup, but I think we saw a real difference without him there.

Opie 308 Report post Posted April 2, 2008 Par for the course, the wings have drafted many, many talented Euros in the late rounds and I think that has a lot to due with the extended success. I am not saying having all Euros or even having Euros is the cause of the success, I am saying that the skill that they drafted late (because no one else was scouting as well/heavily in Europe) is far superior to what most other teams draft that late. BTW http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/draft/nhl1989e.html D drafted ahead of Lids in 1989: Adam Bennett Doug Zmolek Jason Herter Jason Marshall Kevin Haller Jason Soules Jamie Heward Steve Bancroft Adam Foote* Dan Ratushny Mike Speer Patrice Brisebrios* Rick Corriveau Bob Boughner* Detroit Paul Laus Brent Thompson Bob Kellogg Veli-Pekka Kautonen Niklas Lidstrom #53 * Players I have ever heard of 3, 4 if you include Lids

Well, that explains it.

Opie 308 Report post Posted April 3, 2008 His point (I am guessing here) was in reference to him and I having many conversations about the importance of fighters. Paul Laus did nothing for Florida except get PIMs and in fights. I only know this because I saw his quote in your post and had to look it up thinking I missed some one, well, relevant. But alas I didn't.
BeeRYCE 2 Report post Posted April 3, 2008 Paul Laus was a pretty good stay at home defenseman. But Opie, you did make your point and I applaud you.
