Does the Tigers poor start effect the Red Wings?

I think it does to some degree. The poor start has maybe put the Red Wings in the Detroit sports spotlight now where they were not before March 31. Yes this is still Hockeytown but over the past few months, this town has been Tigers crazy especially after their huge offseason moves, and who can blame them. The Tigers went out and grabbed quality players and paid them a ton of money (ie, Cabrera signed 8 year, $152 million contract).

The Red Wings have enjoyed an "under the radar" mainly because of this and the fact that "they are the Red Wings" and casual sports fans have taken the "wake me up when its the finals" approach to the Red Wings. A successful Red Wing season to casual wings fans and die hard fans to is answered with this simple question:

Did you win the Cup?

I feel that probably for the first time since before the Tigers rebirth in 2006, the focus might shift back towards the Red Wings in this city, especially if they make a long playoff run and the Tigers poor start continues to a poor season.

Oh btw, the Pistons are still popular but the east is so weak there might as well be byes until Boston and Detroit meet up in the Eastern Conference Finals.

Thoughts?

Well I was having this discussion with friends yesterday. And I know it sounds rediculous but I am verrrry superstitious when it comes to hockey. And we were watching the Tigers last night and my friend was upset that they weren't doing to well and I just reminded him that the Tigers got to the World series in 06 when the Wings didn't get past the first round. Therefore, until hockey is over, I don't mind the Tigers losing for a while. Again, I am very superstitious.

And yes, I agree that if the Tigers are playing poorly then people will shift toward the Wings. Especially after the first round.

This is the same city that has continually birthed interest in the Detriot Lions, and from what I have garnered from listening to local sports talk radio is that this has only causes most people in the Detroit area to talk even more about the Tigers. However, they just moan, *****, and talk about what's wrong, which is the same thing with the Lions

I do think in the long run it the Red Wings might harness a bit more coverage because of it though, Tigers have to completely prove they're mediocre first and beyond help however, and the Wings will probably have to show us something in the post season first. It's hard to get excited about Detroit/Nashville, however judging by the way we local sport fans seems to prioritize, Wings will make top news if we blow the first 3 games and fall behind 0-3 in the series.

haha my boss said to me (jokingly) today that the tigers' terrible start is part of an intricate conspiracy on the illitch family's part, in order to sell (more expensive) red wings playoff tickets.

honestly though, i don't think it really makes too much of a difference. the economy is really really bad. and a lot more people can afford to go to a tigers game than a wings game. so they will.

i have my fingers crossed though, that the wings'll sell out every playoff game. i guess we'll see. :)

Nah, I doubt the Wings players give two s***s about the Tigers at this point. They've been to the playoffs before, they can deal with almost any kind of stress. I think the last thing they are thinking about is baseball.

you missed the point of this thread. Of course the Red Wings dont care about baseball (of course a lot of wings go to tigers games).

The general sports attention in Detroit might change based on what the Tigers have done on the field with their poor start. Are the red wings in a bigger spotlight locally now that the Tigers are off the radar for a lot of casual fans?

I was just talking about this today.I really DO think the struggling Tigers will help the Wings get more attention right now.I mean we need some kind of excitment in Detroit sports right now because surely the Tigers are not providing any.I mean with the expectations being SOO damn high before the season for the Tigers and now being the only team in the MLB that hasn't won a game I do think it's leaving a sour taste in the mouths of fans here in Detroit. It's playoff time man, forget regular season baseball.I mean I like baseball but these regular season games are hard to watch.

No, I got what you meant - I just didn't answer very well. Sorry.

I guess its hard for me to say because I don't live in or around Detroit, but you would assume thats what would normally happen wouldn't you? It seems like more attention would be on the playoff team rather then a team with 155 games left to play. Sure opening day is sweet, but by 2 weeks into the baseball season...I would pick playoff hockey over spring ball any day. So saying that, I would assume the Wings are used to the spotlight. Therefore, not making much of a difference in their play.

Do the Tigers normally carry more attention than the Wings during Hockey playoffs? I guess I am not the one to be responding.

Well it makes sense that if the Tigers success is stealing thunder from the Wings, that their failure would eventually allow bandwagon fans to turn back towards the Wheel.

I really could care less about baseball, all my attention is going to the Red Wings, and I know that if they win it all the attention will be there.

I told my sister the Tigers can lose every game until the Wings win the cup, then they can win every game and it will be a fair trade.
