Why Habs?

A journalist once mistakenly reported that the "h" in the Canadiens logo stood for les habitants (sp?), and it stuck. It actually stands for hockey, as in "club de hockey Canadien."

Yeah, thats what I've heard. People usually think its for Les Habitants, but I think you are right - originally it was for Hockey. At least thats what wikipedia says!

Ok...so Habs stand for "les habitants"-which was a slang name given to the residents of New France back in the 16 or 17th century (can't remember...dammit brain!). BTW...at a point in history, Habitant was a very derogitory word that implied that these settlers were inferior. So, Back in the early 20's, the owner of Madison Square Garden (Tex ?--rich guy who was originally from Texas and owned MSG) mistakenly told a NYTimes reporter that the H on ther jersey stood for Habitants....which...is not true. The reasoning for the H on the jersey is for "Club de Hockey Canadien".
