Philly fans have class.

Oh c'mon, this is exactly the kind of stuff we do at Michigan games here at Yost to rattle the other team. It's just fans being obnoxious but thats what fans are supposed to do.

This is not Disney on ice, these are the Stanley Cup Playoffs. If you don't want your children hearing bad language, don't bring them to a hockey game. Sorry if this is insensitive, but that is how I feel.

says the person that probably doesn't have kids.

Yes, you hit the nail on the head, that is EXACTLY what we do at Yost and it is the reason why Yost is the most feared rink for opposing teams to play in.

By we, you mean the "fans" at Yost. Screaming vulgarities at opposing players doesn't make a teams' barn difficult to play in. Loud fans that support their team, the surroundings/environment they play at and the level of play the home team plays with make things difficult . When was the last time you heard a chant like that at Lambeau Field (home of the Packers)? Yet look at how difficult it was to play there for over a decade.

I completely disagree that screaming vulgarities are what makes a fan. I think thats what makes individuals classless.

If you're taking your little kid to a Flyer's playoff game, or any playoff game, you have to expect your child to hear things like that... what's the difference between that and the chant that 30 teams in the league use when the ref makes a bad call, "BULLs***......BULLs***...."

Nothing....does that make it right?

I agree... i have never gone to a game and not heard some sort of vulgarity. I'm not gonna say that is how it should be since the NHL is trying to be a "family sport", but that is the way it is.

Again...does that make it right, or would you want your kids (if you have any) to be exposed to grown adults screaming that sort of thing?

I wouldn't, and I'm not even a father yet.

What do you expect from a large group of fans. Any large group of fans act like morons. Case in point: southern fans that think blowing on a little kazoo when a piece of trash "player" steps out on the ice.

I think that there is a big difference between chanting explatives against a player on the other team and supporting one of your teams own players. Don't get me wrong I don't like Tootoo but there is a HUGE difference.

Go to Michigan vs. Michigan State at Yost and you'll understand.

There's not much difference in class between "Ovechkin sucks!" and "F*ck Ovechkin". One isn't classy and the other is even less classy.

Very true! I don't know why people have to do things like this at games. It makes it hard for it to be a family atmosphere which makes it harder to get younger kids excited and interested in sports and teaches them at a young age an classless way to act that sadly seems to denegrate further as they grow up. There are much better ways to show excitement at a game and support for your team than hurling explatives at a player who works as as hard as anyone in the league and enjoys playing the game more than most.

I guess that doesn't make it "right" but any parent who is taking their child to a game knows the "consequences"

The main question raised by this thread though is whether or not it is classless and should it happen not whether parents know it will happen. I know that lots of things either will or are likely to happen but that doesn't mean that it should happen or that people shouldn't try to be considerate of others who want to take their children to the game and teach them to love hockey.

Let me preface this by saying I have no kids so I have no clue on how it is to be a parent in this situation. My take is though your kids will hear this language at some point in there life. If it is something you are really uncomfortable about them hearing atleast it would be with you right there to make sure they understand its not something they are to be saying.

You are correct that kids will hear this type of thing. But we as a society used to have some sense of propriety. We realized that there are times and places where things may not be appropriate. It used to be that society realized and respected the people around them. The debate (at least in my opinion) is not so much about when the kids hear it but rather whether the fans are classless when they engage in such behavior when: (1) children may be exposed to language, attitudes, and behaviour that are are far less than model, and (2) they are cursing a player on another team who is not dirty or cheap and plays with his heart and soul every shift. It is just a question of whether people should take into account thier surroundings when they engage in certain behavior. Most parents would be furious with their kids for the exact same condut if the kids did it at a junior high or high school sporting event and perhaps we should try to hold ourselves to the level that we hold our kids.

Trust me, I understand why people do it but that doesn't make it right. Like skacore said, unfortunately you have to expect that when you take a child to a game, which is sad. Some of my best memories were when I was kid was when my Dad took me to Packers games. I look forward to doing that with my future kids some day. Fans get well into the game, but you don't here chants like "F*ck Ovechkin" because Packers fans (as a whole) have more class than those individuals screaming things like that.

As for your Michigan State vs. Michigan comment....congrats. You've got a bunch of drunk 18-22 years-olds that find it fun to swear back and forth at each other. Once again I ask, since you still haven't answered it......would you want your kids to be exposed to that type of language and vulgarity if all you wanted to do was take them to a MSU/UM Game?

How would you feel if you had to cover your child's ears as you were heading down the escalator? I know I wouldn't have liked being in that situation with a little one.

I'm all for fans getting into it, giving the other team (and their fans) a hard time, but screaming "f*** Ovechkin" in a place where kids are plentiful isn't appropriate regardless of the fact that you're at a competitive sporting event.

I had not looked at it that way, thank you. I would probably be angry if my girl was there.

interesting.....perhaps parents should teach their kids rather than relying on "strangers" to set the example.

Maybe, we can vote in Hilary so someone can finally clean things up. Parents don't need to "parent". They are far too busy.

/lame

Maybe there can be a parents "section". Kind of like the cry-room at church. :)
