Now you people wonder why im an atheist.

God doesn't exist. The Red Wings Existed LONG BEFORE the World did. The Red Wings spawned a son to lead us into the 21st Century, his name was Steve Yzerman. On the 8th Day, Steve gave us a Stanley Cup.

That is your Religion Lesson for today.

The Pope coming to the US is kind of a big deal. It sends a lot of political messages and important religious undertones.

It sucks for people in New York but I can udnerstand why they would preempt a game for this. Now golf on the other hand...

Yep...major big deal. For Catholics, being in the presence of the Pope is second only to being in the presence of Jesus Himself. I watched his mass in Washington on Thursday and the one in New York today, and I will tape the one from Yankee Stadium tomorrow - sorry, but it's the playoffs, it's Game 6, it's potentially a series-ending game...I've got to watch my Wings.

Exactly... i mean it was fun watching the Smoke stacks at the vatican waiting for the white smoke... but personally not being Catholic... I am more awed by being in the presence of the stanley cup... in the hockey hall of fame!

The pope being in town basically would be second only to Jesus Himself, so I get why its a big deal to Catholics. Being Lutheran, I guess it'd be the same if Martin Luther came to town. I think maybe I'd skip one day of hockey, even if it was the playoffs, to go see that happen. But that's just me.

Who knows, maybe the nhl would ban the pope from hockey games if he took the octopus and twirled it around...or better yet, replaced the white hat with the octopus itself!

LOLOL!!! It wouldn't quite match his hair the way his white hat does. ;) And it would be a bit slimy and drippy, not to mention smelly. It could soil his vestments.

If I had tickets to his mass tomorrow, I'd definitely go without a second thought. I'd tape the Wings game instead. But since I don't have tickets and already saw two out of the Pope's three masses I'm completely happy taping the Yankee Stadium one.

Please lock this thread.

All the religion bashers are coming out of the woodwork. This is A HOCKEY FORUM!!!

1) The game is only interrupted in one market

2) It is the free choice of the TELEVISION network on what it wants to air.

Not bashing religion just not understanding why its not preempting any the traditonal Sunday Morning Religous stuff... They would get more of a kick out of it... no?

I am religious by all means... but somethings just don't really need to be shared with everyone...

Only the stations in New York know why they are choosing to air the pope's mass as opposed to the Red Wings game.

I have an idea that it is more for ratings purposes as opposed to oppressive Catholic TV station workers forcing the pope's airing.

The Pope is a major world leader, besides being the leader of over a billion Catholics worldwide. When he comes to the US, it's a big deal, more than even the Queen of England. So the Pope takes precedence over a hockey game. I suppose the only thing that would preempt the Pope is if the Shiites and Sunnis over in Iraq decided to join hands around Sadr City and sing "Kumbaya." And mean it. ;) Or if Bush decided to pull all of our troops out of Iraq.

There are more Catholics in this country than there are Wings fans...sad but true fact. LOL ;)

As for the timing, well they're showing the Mass in real time so they have to broadcast it as it's happening. That's just the way it's scheduled. *shrug* And the Mass probably will get higher ratings than the Wings game, anyway. :P

LOL! He is 81 years old! Lets see how fast you are mentally and physically beyond the age of 80.

LOL!!! You obviously haven't met my dad yet...he's sharp and spry at 82, and he still works full time even though he retired over 15 years ago! His only problem is, the older he gets, the crabbier he gets. :P His favorite phrase is "what a jackass!" which he uses to describe anyone who doesn't see things his way (which of course is the ONLY way...lol).

Me? At age 81?

I would own this Pope.

(Yes - this is the only place we can ever read the words "own this Pope".)

I'd imagine going 5-hole on the pope would be your best bet.

isn't that only a weakness for priests? vicious.gif

I imagine we need a better a way to score on the pope

I'm relieved to find that this will only effect one area of the country, and that they are given options to watch the game.

Let's remember that this isn't the Pope's decision; it's NBC's. One of the other networks could have gotten coverage of the Pope, but only NBC has hockey. It was their choice, not the Pope's.

If I seem too calm about this, it's because last year my local NBC station pre-empted game 3 of the SCF for a telethon benefiting a local hospital. What really frosted my miniwheats was that I had been at my parents' house, 2 hours away, and had driven back for the game. I listened to it on NHL radio, just like I do every other game that isn't on NBC, and life went on.

Disappoinements happen. Fortunately, this is not going to be a disappointment. The game is still on.

Now if Jesus comes back, I expect full coverage, preferably on ABC. I don't trust any news from a network that advertises that you can CBS. I see enough BS anyway.
