Why does Fedorov wear nr 29...

I'm watching the Russia vs Czech rep game and I noticed that Feds is wearing the number 29 on his jersey. Why is that? I'm assuming a retired jersey because who on the current Russian national squad would take the number 91 in Fedorov's stead?

According to Japers' Rink (I googled that page, to be honest), Fedorov wore that number at his last World Championships back in 1990. So I think he just wanted to keep "his" old number.

By the way, notice the name of the Italian goalkeeper mentioned in that article... :D

I personaly think it s because slava bykov's jersey has been retired. Bykov is the current trainer of russia and was one of the greater center in the russian history.

I have to say i register specially to the board to answer at your question coz Bykov played in the town i come from in Switzerland (Fribourg), and he is veritably a legend here!

It s many years i m a fan of the Wings and some months i read this board that a really appreciate ! All keep going!

bykov had the number 90 with his team in fribourg. 91 was khomutov. so bykov hat number 91 with the russian team? i can't belive that!

Of course for fribourg numbers. I don t know why i always believed he wore the 91 in national team but after checking i was wrong.. number 27 so the question of this thread is still open.

@Wilson alias DaKineMaui: thank you!

@swiss_redwingfan: where do you come from?

If we're talking about the Bykov I remember... he was a good player but proclaiming him one of the best Russian centers in history is a reach.

well to answer you, wihout mentionning his palmares, the fact he was the captain of russia, taht he scored clutch goals in very important international games , Fetisov said about Bykov

"When someone weight 70kg (sorry i dont know how many pounds), is one of the best center center in the world and throw his body around like he do, is easy to understand who do you have in front of you"..

I remember a guy from the Red Wings too. Larionov? I'd love to take him out to dinner and talk hockey sometime. (By "take him out" I mean "eat dinner" and go to the bathroom when the check comes, and then leave.)

I miss Igor. The guy saw the ice from underneath.

"When someone weight 70kg (sorry i dont know how many pounds),

I'll take this one......70kg.

That would be 595,000 "lbs" in the States, in England it would be 4.2 billion "hands" or "centimeters" or "seltzerbottles".

Are you guys sure it's Sergi? It could be Fedor Fedorov- Sergi's brother. Fedor scored a goal and an assist against Canada in the pre-tournament exhibition game while wearing 81... I have no idea whether he's changed numbers since more NHL players have arrived- but it makes more sense than Sergi changing his number, no?

That being said- I don't really think you see many number changes that late in the game unless someone who wasn't originally in Russia's changed their minds and that resulted in a late shuffle of numbers?

EDIT:

Forget all that posturing- I found a roster on the iihf website:

http://stats.iihf.com/Hydra/132/IHM132D03_54B_1_0.pdf

Sergi is wearing 29... and the only reasonable explanation I've heard is the one above about his number used in international play early in his career. That or 91 is retired by the Russian national team.
