We use an octopus because people started throwing them one the ice when a team only needed 8 wins to win the cup. 8 legs on the octopus=8 wins+the cup.

Before a game. Rarely are they thrown after that. Maybe after a big win...

Recently they are thrown now right after the "home of the braaaaAAAAaaaave" but in the past it mostly done after goals ... best was the horn blowing and seeing seeing Al twirling the mofo in the air... classic good times!
