Blake Wheeler is now a UFA..

I'm not positive on this, but since Wheeler was drafted in 2004, he's not subjected to the 2005 CBA and it's rookie cap rules.

Jeff Carter signed a deal in 2005 where the Flyers didn't have to abide by the new rules since he was drafted in 2003.

That could be, but I'll have to do some digging. TBH, I can't imagine something like this wouldn't be taken into affect though simply because every player that was contracted and making over 20% of their teams cap heading into the 05/06 season had to trim their salaries to fit the new CBA. I can't imagine that it wouldn't apply to the other end of the spectrum.

I just like the idea of signing him because we don't really have a guy like him in our system. I would agree that if he is completely anti-AHL then the Red Wings aren't the organization for him to go to, but it's hard to imagine that there's another team that could give him a better combo of playing time + money than the team he just turned down. So maybe immediate PT isn't what he's after??

Kopecky would be ahead of him (at least initially) having paid his dues and gotten some experience, but he really seemed like "just a guy" to me for most of the season. He was ok... Wheeler clearly has much more potential (though potential is all it is and it remains to be seen if he'll even be as decent of a player as Kopecky in the NHL).

I love Helm--he's been really impressive in the playoffs. You'd never know it that he's a rookie--and one that had a whole seven games to his credit before the postseason. He's gotta be on the roster next year. Abdelkader definitely warrants a look as well. So there might not be room for Wheeler, but young guys with that much talent don't become available all that often. Maybe the circumstances don't work out that we can sign him and commit that much money to him, but I think he'll end up being a fine player for somebody.

He's an absolute monster. Maybe underachieved somewhat this year, but I think the Goofers had him playing center for a lot of the season and he's probably better off as a wing. I came to start this thread earlier today and couldn't get to the site. I'd love to see him in a Wings jersey, even though I typically hate everyone and everything having to do with the University of Minnesota.

Hey you're right! I think you could be a better coach than Hall-of-Famer Lucia! Dude you should be coaching the most storied college hockey team in the nation! Please...

I agree. I'd love to see what this kid could do with Pavel and Hank.

I really believe, with the right centre and in the right system, he could be a 30 goal scorer.

But the Wings won't give him Holmstrom money. Especially with Z's contract up in 2 seasons, where he'll probably get $7M+.

But you never know? Maybe he'd love to have a shot with the Wings. Even if he has to work his way up from the farm. Doubt it though.

I don't think this is a money issue with this kid I think this is an organizational thing, he sees them going nowhere and wants to win, I can't blame him for it. He turned down the most money he can make so people need to stop acting like he is asking for money, he can not make more than they offered him.

Seriously can you blame him though, who wants to play in PHO right now.

Hey, they needed centers. I didn't say there was anything wrong with the move. With the defections (RyPo, Kessel, Okposo) and injuries (Stoa and Carman) it's not hard to figure out why they had him playing center the last couple years. But that's also not his natural position. Take a fricken pill.

At least he didn't go flinging himself into the net after a game....

Upon further reflection, I'm not sure I'm as annoyed about this as I was at first. Turning down more money isn't so bad...I can understand it if he wants to play for the Wild (his home team) or if he wants to pick and choose...but I do wonder if this isn't just bad karma!

I agree. He'll make a better winger (his natural position) than a centre at the NHL level.

Especially if he got to play with a centre like Zetterberg.

Way to take a shot at a kid with mental health issues. Real classy!

Fine, I retract that statement. Instead, I'll conclude the previous post by saying "Take a fricken pill. I bet Nate Hagemo could hook you up with some good s***."

That work better for ya?

You are an idiot. Making fun of other people's problems just to make yourself feel better. Typical Badger Fan.

That's me! Wisconsin fan #1! I worship the ground Robbie Earl dives on.

All this because I didn't take a shot at your coach while discussing a player from your team that I actually like and would want the Wings to sign.....

Well, it's not really his fault he got drafted by a crap trap like Phoenix.. while you obviously don't turn down a shot at the NHL, you get out of a place like that when you have a chance to ASAP if you're not in it for the money.

While I'm not getting into this flame war, stating "Typical Badger Fan" is pretty ignorant. I like the Badgers, and you don't hear me making edgy comments.

Agreed. If he's looking for a better situation for himself, then I don't fault him one bit. It would be years before he'd normally have a chance to be a UFA. He won't make more money with this move (and chances are, he'll make less) but there's something to be said for getting to pick whatever team you want to go to. I'd be tempted to do the same if I was in his situation.

By turning down a deal from Phoenix, the rules automatically revert to post cap rules. Now the only contract he can get is the standard three year rookie deal max which is $1.7 mill + bonuses for major awards. With his age, it maybe only a two year deal instead of three.

Just like Leino? Or Brunnstrom they couldn't get anything more then one year at the rookie max but they're a year older.

Trust me, you're not a typical Badger fan then. They are some of the most vulgar and rude fans that you will come across.

What would make me believe that after you said:

I'd love to see him in a Wings jersey, even though I typically hate everyone and everything having to do with the University of Minnesota.

And you are from Madison, WI. The only people that would be ignorant enough to say "I hate everyone and everything having to do with the University of Minnesota" and take unwarranted cheap shots at Gopher players are Wisconsin Badger fans. Period.

Anyways, although I believe Wheeler is a solid hockey player I do not think he is worth a spot over Helm or anyone else on the Wings who are trying to pay their dues.

OTA's? What's that?

The organized team activities the Packers have going on? I think a couple of them were/are open to the public.

That's probably why I like it so much in Madison. And no cheap shot at a Gopher player is unwarranted.

Are all Goofer fans as thin-skinned as you? I didn't say anything that bad and I certainly didn't dare insult the coaching abilities of The Don.

Anyways, although I believe Wheeler is a solid hockey player I do not think he is worth a spot over Helm or anyone else on the Wings who are trying to pay their dues.

If he's looking to have a spot gifted to him, then I'd probably agree. But I'd be thrilled to allow someone like Wheeler the chance to earn a spot and get into the mix. I think he's going to be a solid player at worst (with a chance to be really good) but I've been wrong before....

Gotcha. My wife and I might make it to the Donnie D Charity Softball game, but we're still waiting on tickets. Other than that, we won two sets of 4-tickets to the upcoming season in the County Lottery. Both my wife's and my name got pulled this year.

Sorry, back on topic.
