European Players Having Their Number Retired

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

I was just reading over the topic about whether Lidstrom and Osgood should have their numbers retired, and then I thought of something interesting about Europeans having their numbers retired, and the fact that I could only think of a few who might have been retired, but I wasn't entirely sure.

So does anyone know offhand how many Europeans have ever had their numbers retired, especially by original six teams?

Also, I was thinking more of guys who were trained in Europe, so guys like Mikita and Bob Nystrom aren't what I am looking for, even though they were born overseas.

I think you forgot #25 Thomas Steen i Winnipeg mindfly.

What the hell does "former retired numbers" mean? They found out they weren't retirement-worthy anymore?

Surprisingly few euros though.

I think there will be more Euros in the future, but at this point, not that many have had their jerseys retired.

Also, I just thought of Peter Stastny, and I bet the Nordiques/divealanche retired his jersey, althouth I could be wrong.

According to mindfly's wikipedia-link Peter Stastny is one of those poor guys whose numbers were "formerly retired"...

I think with regards to former retired numbers, what has happened is teams that have relocated have had retired numbers and then the next incarnation of that franchise has not recognised those retired numbers. I believe Stastny is one example of this with the Diques.

His son is currently wearing his number for the same organization; this likely would have occurred even had Colorado retained the Quebec retired numbers. But yes, the Avs did do a 'retiree dump' when they moved...which was not terribly classy.
