Majsheppard 203 Report post Posted June 17, 2008 Check out the draft prospects. I do not remember there being so many right handers on the top end. There could be 8 righties going in the top ten. Also the rankings have alot more defensemen, many of which are "undersized" but are described as great puck movers. As another thread stated this is a trend that just was started because the Wings dominate. I wouldn't mind picking up a few more righties, if nothing else I can buy their sticks during the sales. Any thoughts, or any other draft quirks you have noticed?

redwingfan19 293 Report post Posted June 17, 2008 Why are there so many left-handed hockey players, anyways? kinda makes you think. Look at golf 95% are right handed.
egroen 384 Report post Posted June 17, 2008 Not even 10% of the population is left-handed... found this on wiki: Interestingly, in the sport of ice hockey, there are many more left- shooters. When shooting, the player's less dominant hand is in the middle of the stick, and the dominant hand is at the top of the stick. When skating fast, or stretching to reach a far away puck, a player will often use only the top hand on the stick. The majority of right-dominant players shoot left-handed, and likewise, the majority of left-dominant players shoot right, allowing them to use their dominant hand when wielding the stick one-handed. The majority of goaltenders also catch with their left hand. In Canada, left-handed children are encouraged to play with a right-handed shot, and this puts their dominant hand on the top of the stick, which strengthens stick-handling skills. However, in the United States, lefties are encouraged to play left-handed; this is because of a perceived advantage at shooting and vision on the ice. toby91_ca 620 Report post Posted June 17, 2008 Shooting "left" has nothing to do with being left-handed.
egroen 384 Report post Posted June 17, 2008 I never really noticed back when I played... As a righty, I would have trouble playing with my left hand on the middle of the stick.
digitaljohn88 4 Report post Posted June 17, 2008 I think the higher amount of righties has to do with the influx of young American defensemen. I could be wrong though.
