Canadiens offer Qualifying Offers

The article states that in order for a team to receive compensation for one of their RFAs if they sign another team's offer sheet they must atleast give the player a 1 year qualifying offer by June 25th.

As far as I know Filppula, or any of the other Wings RFAs have not recieved any type of offer. Would this mean that if he accepts another team's offer the Wings will not get anything for him?? Could someone with a little more knowledge on the rule enlighten me. Why would the wings take such a risk, or could they just be thoroughly confident that Flip is going to sign with them regardless.

One other question...if a team makes an offer sheet, does Detroit have to match it regardless of whether Flip is willing to take a lesser salary from us?

1 thing I do know about the offer sheet process is that if Flip wants to take less money to stay in Detroit, which it appears he does, he can just refuse their offer. It is an offer sheet he has to accept it before Detroit even has to worry about it.

If Filppula was offerend and signed an offer sheet to another team, the Wings would get compensatory picks from the team that signed him if the Wings decided not to match it. Lets say the Canadiens offered Filppula an offer sheet, the Wings have I believe 24 (or 48) hours to match it or let him go. In doing so they would get the Canadiens' compensatory picks based on what he signed for.

even if they have not made a qualifying offer by June 25th?

All this stuff confuses me. I tried reading the rules but even my university degree in english could not crack all that legal mumbo jumbo.

I believe so.

What page of the CBA is it on? I'll go read it.

page 30 section II...it seems pretty clear now that I read it again that the Wings would not at this point get any compensation for flip if he were to accept an offer sheet from another team.

I just read the article those are their own RFA's not other teams RFA's.

So the part about them signing with other teams with no compensation is there because if they cannot get their own RFA's signed by July 1st they become UFA's and available to all other teams.

It is not that they can offer a contract to Flip and if he signs after June 25 there are no compensations.

thanks for the clarification :)

edit: I can definetely see Corey Perry getting an offer sheet thrown his way. If I was in Anaheim's division I would, considering they will probably be willing to overpay to keep him after what happened with Penner last year. Drive up his price and they have less room for other players :D.... but that could backfire and you could get stuck with him and lose a few big draft picks :s

As far as I know Filppula, or any of the other Wings RFAs have not recieved any type of offer.

Filppula (along with the rest of the Restricted Free Agents - except Logan Koopmans who is facing retirement after tons of injuries and hernia surgery) was extended a qualifying offer from the Red Wings. All it means is that it keeps him (and the rest) from becoming an unrestricted free agent on July 1st.

He's still subject to offer sheets from other teams - but at least he can't be lost for NOTHING.

Here's hoping he's not lost at all.

As JeeSpot stated, as long as Filppula was extended a qualifying offer he can't be lost for nothing. I'm sure he was offered some lowball amount to keep the Wings from losing him for nothing (even if it got that far--which it won't).

Oh, ok, that was how I interpreted the CBA... I just was not aware that he had been extended a qualifying offer.

I can guarantee that Flip was offered the same salary as this season sometime after we won the cup in the form of a basic contract. This ensures that we retain his rights when July 1st comes if we hadn't signed him by then.

That's all you have to do is offer the RFA to be a contract of the equal or more value than their current one to retain their rights.

Which is what makes the Penner situation from last year so friggin absurd, all Burke had to do was offer him a contract even if it was the same he was making the year before, then that prevented him from having him stolen right out from under his nose.

I think his arrogance got in the way of that one.

Would you guys say the most probable RFA out there to shift teams is Corey Perry?

I realize we're contractually obligated to hate him. Truth be told, he makes our job very easy (e.g., "He's gonna get it," fighting with a visor).

However, I'd absolutely love to see him on the Wings.

I don't think its worth putting an offer sheet out for Perry! We need to sign the players we had this year first, and maybe get a second or third line guy (like Drake) and just roll like we did last year, and wait until the trade deadline to make any BIG moves if needed!!
