As their most recent segment was wrapped up they said Hossa has a few possibilities. $7M or so from the Pens. $9M or so from the Oil. And something Datsyuk-ish from Detroit (so $6-7M).

I was just watching tsn and they said Pens, wings, and oilers. Ofcourse team names are just flying out. But i wouldnt count us out.

I count the wings out. They have 38mil committed to 09-10 already. Thats before Zetterberg, Franzen, Flip and Hudler are signed. I just don't see how it works.

why he would sign with the oil is beyond me if he wants to play for a contender... both det and pitt are offering job security with 7 year deals, yeah you get more money in edmonton but you're not exactly in contender land

Haha. Go figure. No sooner do I post do they update. If I'm Hossa, I'd go with Detroit, assuming there isnt that much of a difference in the price between the Pens and the Wings.

As for going to the Oilers...I don't care how much they paid me, I'd stay clear. They're the furthest from the cup of all three, have suspect goaltending as it is, and who knows who they'd have to trade if they added Hossa. They're 4M from the cap floor. They need to cut 5M alone simply to reach the cap roof. Not to mention the weather..I'd be wary of a team that would be losing assets once I signed.

The last time the Wings won the Cup they didn't make many changes the following year. That year we got swept by the Ducks in the 1st round of the playoffs.

Just because we won the Cup, doesn't mean that we don't need changes. It's difficult to repeat, and sometimes you have to juggle things a bit. I was hoping Holland wasn't sitting on his ass when it came to some of these big name forwards, but it looks now like he has.

judging by how much the wings front office seems enamored with this guy i think they're willing to let 1 or 2 of of them walk, tbh. obviously not Zetterberg.

you're out of your mind. He's made offers to both of them; he hasn't thrown the bank at them because that would be a retarded move

Out of the guys I mentioned who are they gonna let walk? If not Hank then who? Flip, Franzen or Hudler. And Hudler wouldn't relieve that much cap pressure imo.

I don't think that's why we lost. The point I was making is that many Cup winner make no changes the next year, and fall on their faces.

You dont think thats why we lost? We had a group of complacent veterans who didnt have a coach to make them care. Babcock does that. Not to mention, this was in the pre-cap era. The majority of our skilled guys were being mauled to the ice before we even entered the zone, and faced one of the best goaltending performances in the modern era. Apples and Oranges.

Now, thats not to say Im not advocating we keep the same exact team. Thats obviously the reason the Wings are looking to add someone whos dying to win a cup.

It sounds like everyone is dying more to make money than win a Cup. The exception may be Sundin, but I'm beginning to wonder how much he cares about winning the Cup.

If not Hank then who? Henrik Zetterberg is better than Hossa. Letting Hank walk would never happen.

As for "letting people walk", it would never come to that. The Wings would trad a guy - likely Filppula as hes the least offensively talented of the trio listed and his defense could easily be supplemented by Hossa's defense. He'd likely earn more than Hudler, hes still an RFA which means well hold his rights, would garner more in a trade than Hudler would, and Franzen brings more to the table in terms of things we dont already have.

The fact that Hossa hasn't jumped at the rumored 9-10.5M a year pretty much proves hes at least giving the lesser offers from more competitive teams a 2nd thought. If he were all about the money, that Edmonton contract would be signed, sealed, and delivered, and make him more money than Alexander the Great.

FFS...

Why in the world would it come down to a choice between Hossa, Z, Fil, Franzen, and Hudler? Can someone explain this absurd fixation to me? Everywhere I go, these are the decisions laid out and it's all crap.

There are other contracts that can be moved one way or another. Not just the young up and comers that figure to be part of our core for many years to come.

Hossa isn't old enough to be "dying for a Cup" as you put it. He would have already re-signed for less in Pittsburgh if all he wanted was to win.

I wasn't saying let Hank walk I was just saying Hank because the guy I was replying too said they wouldn't let Hank walk so I wasn't even conisdering him was my point.

I'm sorry but is there some sort of age requirement to be dying to win a cup? This contract Hossa signs will put him with a team for the rest of his prime, and possibly beyond. Of course hes going to be considering going to a team that is competitive year after year.

And why would he have already signed in Pittsburgh? Pittsburgh had plenty of question marks surrounding their team when Hossa was asked to re-sign. Why on earth would he not investigate all his options? Is there some crystal ball you have that says Pittsburgh is guaranteed the cup next year?

Then where do they find the room? Tell me I would love to hear it. And you're right there are no decisions laid out by Ken Holland for the future. I have never heard him say "We've got a good cap situation this year but it's 09-10 where it's a little tighter because Zetterberg and Franzen will have new contracts." Thats not a direct quote but pretty close. How do the Wings pull it off? How do they not plan ahead with stuff like this? Lets say they sign Hossa for 6.5mil, just making up a number. Tell me how they get Filppula, Hank and Franzen signed and under the cap for 09-10? And don't give me the crap that the cap could go up because right now you don't know what it would even if it did go up.
