Holland says Hossa wanted more then $7.5. Holland said he promised Lidstrom nobody would make more then him, he would have to call Lids to see his feelings about it. Hossa said don't worry about it ill sign for what Lidstrom is making.

Just about to post this exact thing. Awesome bargaining by Holland, to say "Hey listen, we're the best, you need us more than we need you" in other words.

I am very happy with the off-season. I wanted us to sign a goaltender so that we could keep the 2 headed monster that we had in Osgood and Hasek. Hossa was just unreal shocking.

And TBH, nobody should make more than Lidstrom on this Wings team. The guy takes paycut after paycut to continue to help the Wings be as competitive as they are year after year. If the best player in the world is willing to take a paycut to give your team the chance to be a perennial contender, everyone else that comes to the Wings needs to do the same.

When it comes to the Red Wings, no one should be making more than Lidstrom.

These guys on the panel are idiots. They are saying Hossa was stupid for walking away from money and term. One guy said it was smart, and how he'd rather be in Detroit then Edmonton, but the other mopes said they'd rather be around all the kids.

I like to win, and then listen to idiots, and then start winning again. Hossa made the best move, and smart for himself as well.

Lidstom is the bar by which the rest of our roster is set. He is the captain of our team, he is THE BEST defensman in the league, he's a six time Norris winner, a four time Stanley Cup winner, a Conn Smyth winner, an Olympic Gold Medalist, a future HHOFer and a career Red Wing. The message is thank you for coming Mr. Hossa but you nor anyone else is more valuable to our team than Lidstrom is. Lidstom sets the example for the rest of the players.

because Lidstrom's reduced his salary a number of times for the team and he's the best player in the world.

It has nothing to do with Lids making more or less money - it has to do with the fact that Lids has continuously taken pay cuts so that the Wing can have money to sign other guys and you don't ask your best player and captain to sacrifice and take less and then not ask that of other guys. Lids doesn't seem to mind taking much less than he is worth to help the team but it doesn't seem right to then take that money and use it to pay another guy more.

Holland did nothing of the sort, if you go to the press conference you will here him say what happened.

He gave a modest long term offer to Hossa, not expecting anything, knowing that he said he would like to be a Wing. When he told him he was going to make a decision tomarrow and that we were still in the mix holland waited.

In the morning his agent asked if we were willing to do a one year deal. Holland said yes, and when the said money, he said I promiced Nick Lidstrom no one would make more then him. Hossa said deal. Holland didn't bend him over, Hossa wanted to come and made it well known he was willing to compromise.

Its huge testiment to Holland that the Organization is so respectable that it can cause this kind of behavior in a guy that 4 months ago said he wanted to make the maximum.
