I did this on another forum for an nfl team, it's kind of interesting.

1.Pick any team. We typically picked some of the more bottom feeders in the league.

2.And explain what you would do to get them to the playoffs this season.

Granted there will be probably a fair amount of transactions before the season starts.

Lets at least try these teams:

Anaheim

Vancouver

Edmonton

Colorado

St.Louis

Chicago

Columbus

Toronto

Washington

Phoenix

Florida

Atlanta

and whoever else needs a little direction.

So basically pick a team, and make pretend trades to make them better *realisticly*

right?

SWEET THREAD! Ok, I'm Brian Burke, in flight I break into the cockpit, take control of the plane and crash it head on into the Florida Panthers' plane.... I just fixed two, BRIAN BURKE IS THE GM OF THE YEAR!

Fix the grammar.

Sorry but I couldnt resist.. ;)

Haha that's what I was thinking too. If I was GM I'd take 3rd grade English over, then buy Lowe a drink. I'd take over Toronto and buy out every contract and start over as an expansion team.

"If I were GM..." .....

Washington needs to re-sign Fedorov. That's it, and they will make the playoffs.

If I were a GM I would stop trying to fix things overnight and plan a long term dynasty. I would start by hiring the best scouts, GM's, and coaches available. I would continue to draft top quality players and build around them. I would create a tradition for winning by making sure that only players with that mind set came here. I wouldn't try to fix things overnight...rome wasn't built in a day. Too many GM's think landing the next big FA will fix their problems. It couldn't be further from the truth.

Lol obviously that is the way to do it, but thats no fun. This way you try to see if you CAN make the quick fix. I think it's a good idea for a thread.

I agree it is a fun thread in a NHL08 sort of way, it's just that I had a long conversation about GM's pulling this crap (2 yr 20mill for Sundin?!) vs what the Wings did. Which one really works? Then they wonder why their teams continue to suck, the NHL can't compete with the other three major sports and why their prized UFA's get run out of town. Or if they do win the cup it's a fluke and they often don't even make the playoffs a year or two later. (Tampa Bay, Hurricanes.)

Here is my take

If I were the GM of....

Anaheim... I'd tell Selanne and Niedermayer to stop coming back and let some of the youth we have develop. (Miller and Ryan). Drop George Parros, that mustache makes him look like a pedophile. No offensive talent.

Vancouver... Package a deal for the Sedins. They aren't siamese twins... They'll get over it.

Edmonton... Need a veteran presence, the youth movement in Edmonton isn't working.

Colorado... Stop living in the Forsberg/Sakic era, their time is done. They need to move on.

St. Louis... Get the broadcaster out of the front office and behind the mic where he belongs. It's not working for the Lions, it's not working for the Blues either.

Chicago... Stay the course. Rocky Wirtz has done a great job in turning the Hawks around from the dark days of his father, "Dollar Bill".

Columbus... Nash could be a greater player if he had a solid group around him. They've had what 10+ straight drafts in the top 10 and they still haven't made the playoffs yet.

Toronto... I'd shoot myself. they're hopeless.

Washington... Should have signed Huet. Theodore isn't what he used to be. They need more than just A.O.

Phoenix... Gretzky was one of the best players in the league... He's not a great coach (sorry). Phoenix has a great pool of prospects, including a couple of U of M guys. They do have a solid goaltender with Bryzgalov.

Florida... Hope a hurricane blows through town and wipes this team off the map, it's not pretty..

Atlanta... See "Toronto"

I'll play, I kinda like Washington and hope for the best for Ovechkin. It should be pretty easy with their quality kids although a lot will depend on which Theodore they get. Boudreau had a lot to do with their success last year and the only major change will be in goal. I expect them to give an improved Tampa a run for the Southeast. A full season out of Clark, Pothier, and Nylander should help, but they need to improve on defense like much of the East. They were tied for 9th in scoring last year but in the bottom half in goals against but they played much better in front of Huet after the deadline. The only players scheduled to become UFAs after this coming season are Brashear, Johnson, and Kozlov.

Not even ten players over 28 years old. Nylander and Brashear are the oldest at 36.

Forwards already under contract:

Ovechkin- 9,538,462

Nylander- 4,875,000

Semin- 4,600,000

Clark- 2,633,333

Kozlov- 2,500,000

Backstrom- 2,400,000

Brashear- 1,200,000

Bradley- 1,000,000

Fleischmann- 725,000

Steckel- 512,500

Giroux- 487,500

Defensemen:

Green- 5,250,000

Poti- 3,500,000

Pothier- 2,500,000

Alzner- 1,675,000 (will be a rookie)

Schultz- 736,889

Jurcina- 881,250

Erskine- 537,500

Morrisonn- RFA (Offer sheet 1 Million+)

Goaltenders:

Theodore- 4,500,000

Johnson- 812,500

Total on Goalies is 5.3 Million

Total under current or expected contracts: 53.3 Million

Cap is at 56.8 Million, cap space is 3.5 Million

Now that I've done the research it appears as though they are pretty set, close to the cap and just waiting for their extremely young players to break out, the difficulty will be keeping them all together long-term. Armchair GM says they could use a veteran presence, someone like maybe Brendan Shanahan, if he would leave NY his salary would fit.

Secondary scoring is maybe the Caps' biggest problem with only 3 forwards scoring more than 20 goals last year, although injuries to Clark and Nylander may have been the biggest reason. They have so many young players with potential that trading for a goal-scoring second liner should be doable, maybe Mike Knuble who only has one year left at Philly and would fit no problem (although Philly is set on young D prospects). Fedorov came in and played well while he was there, if he enjoyed playing there he would be worth adding at a significantly reduced salary from his 6 million+ of last year, between the 2 million they supposedly offered and the 4 million he thinks he's worth. To them he's probably worth just over 3 million.

I'm a big fan of Jason Smith, and I think his veteran presence would certainly help the young blueliners, he would certainly be affordable and could solidify their top 4 with two gritty vets and two younger offensive-minded guys. A gritty left-handed top 4 would be welcomed. Berard would be a risk, but could have a good season with some youngsters and a healthy year. Knowing that Defense wins championships they might consider trading for Schneider. He could be had for very cheap, and provides what they're looking for, however they would likely lose Fedorov unless they managed to wait till the deadline or lose salary somewhere else.

Go after Feds and a vet Dman, but if he won't take less than 4 million, trade for Schneider and a pick and let the young forwards play.

Babcock: Trade samulesson for some draft picks and cap space

Holland i mean lol

Ugh....for the millionth time, Samuelsson takes up practically no cap space is beyond defensively responsible and on top of that, showed the ability to score timely goals in the last two playoffs (2007 - Game 6 in SJ, 2008 - Game 1 of the SCF's).

Somebody tell me a player out there making as little as Sammy does that can contribute with the *all-around* play Mikael does.

Sorry.....back on topic.

Legace

Mason

TRADE Legace. He was extremely good last year (as was mason) but there are enough teams looking for veteran goalie who has proven he is good. Trade him for a 2nd line scorer or a top 4 defenseman. (plus pick). the blues need more depth for their skaters. They dont need a legace - mason combo....

ummm Manny Legace will not get you a top 4 d-man, think of it this way would you trade Kronwall for Legace? Stuart?

And there is no way they get a legit Second liner for him either, he has proven to be a great back up mediocre starter, there is not a high demand for that around the league.

Your completely right. What makes sami valuable is that he is dirt cheap compared to what he delivers. WHICH IS WHY WE SHOULD TRADE HIM FOR A HIGH PICK IN NEXT YEARS DRAFT. There are plenty of s***ty teams that need to increase depth but dont have cap space. These teams could really use a player like Sami who is cheap, reliable and contributes from time to time. In the mean time we could give players like kopecky, helm, abdelkader, and leino some ice time. and we wont have to consider taking maltby off for an enforcer.

how does a cap number of 1.2M equate to no cap space?? it actually equates to $5.47M prorated salary cap space come trade deadline. I agree that Sammy has a role, but his cap number undeniably has value. I fully expect him and/or Lilja to be moved because of this.

Can I see your algorithm fort that prorated number I don't understand how a guy who's full contract is 1.2 mil can go up to 5.47 with less than a full season left?

If it is a 1.2 hit for a full year for Detroit why would it be higher with 1/3 of the season left, and why 5 x's higher?

Why him or Lilja? Because "we" at LGW don't like them and they must be expendable in Kenny's mind as well as a result?

First and foremost, the member I quoted stated they'd move Sammy now for cap space or picks/prospects. They didn't say anything about waiting until the deadline, so I wasn't referring to that. $1.2 million for the season for Sammy is beyond fair. The deadline is a completely different issue.

Now, why would any team in the NHL trade a rental to the Red Wings at the deadline for another player that will become an UFA at the end of the season (which is what Sammy's situation is)? What possible purpose would that serve the team that makes a deal with the Wings at the deadline? Sure, it would help the Wings' cap situation given proration, but why would another team want Sammy in return for one of their elite?

Next, Lilja was just signed as an UFA. He is not going to be moved unless you want to break the cardinal rule of UFA signings. Lilja will not be moved.....not even at the trade deadline. You can mark that.

Lastly, I don't understand how the majority of LGW thinks Kenny's a God for bringing in and signing the players he does yet how can he not see how "worthless" Lilja and Sammy are? I just don't understand how members of this site don't understand what Kenny is trying to accomplish and the gameplan he's been using ever since he's been here, and moreso even since the Salary Cap was instituted.
