henrik40 76 Report post Posted August 11, 2008 Haha I really can't believe they think Babcock tried to say something Hossa about coming to Detroit, what garbage. They're reaching to the stars to try to find an excuse as to why he would choose Detroit over Pitt besides the fact that the Wings are better. They wouldn't want to admit that. SouthernWingsFan 854 Report post Posted August 11, 2008 (edited) Plenty of people are laughing at Penguins fans for this, but if the teams were reversed and the Red Wings lost in the SCF and Hossa or somebody who was one of the best players in the league did this to the Red Wings to go to the defending champs with the Wings losing in the Finals, I bet plenty of people in here would be writing all kinds of Hossa-hate mail or be practicing their booing when that great player came to town on the other team. Dabura 12,232 Report post Posted August 11, 2008 To borrow a quote from Adam and Jamie of Mythbusters... "There's your problem..." But seriously, Pens fans can screw off. Besides, isn't Crosby, like, Gretzky x 12 or something? Don't see why he'd need help from a lowly mortal like Marian Hossa. psh
stevie for president 42 Report post Posted August 11, 2008 People need to stop mentioning Fedorov's situation with Detroit being in line with Hossa's situation whatsoever. Fedorov was playing for an organization that went through hell to even get him into the NHL, and then gave him everything he could've dreamed of while he was here. The Pens have had one year of bona fide success and then went on to lose a few key pieces to their playoff run. The only situation that is comparable is Schneider. He was a huge point producer for Detroit, and what he didn't have in game-taking presence a la Hossa, he had in tenure with the wings. Were Wings fans pissed? Yes. Did we go on a booing streak with him, bestowing him withe nicknames like "Schneiderasshole" or "Judas" like Pens fans have? No. The only answer I have is that its a patently young fan group, due to the fact that a pair of youngsters lead the squad and a teenager was their renaissance man. And that translates into a lot of immaturity that other fan bases don't have to such an extent.. The Wings agreed to a contract with Fedorov and then when he went to sign, it was 1 year and $10 million less than the original contract. Of course he left. I would've left. You can call the wings the classiest team in sports, and I would agree, but what they did to Sergei was very very classless. And for some reason, after that, after 3 cups, after all the highlights, he still gets booed by the fans after 5 years. thats all i meant by it. i was never trying to compare his situation with hossas because they arent similar. as far as schneider is concerned, Rafalski is 10x better, his contract is better, and i think thats why wings fans werent pissed. he was replaced by someone better. therock48880 14 Report post Posted August 11, 2008 (edited) There's a layer even deeper than that though. Yes, everything you said is true, but there's a bit more to it. Hossa had previously said that he would like to sign in Pittsburgh. He even said that he would take less money to sign with a contender. So the fans got their hopes up that he would be returning, and that a full year's worth of ice time with Sid & Geno would build up their chemistry. Pittsburgh's front office put together several deals to offer to him, varying in length and money. But Hossa asks to be given the chance to test the open market. Everyone knows that Edmonton put together a 7 year, 60 million deal, to which Pitts had zero chance of matching. But when Hossa surprises EVERYONE and signs a one year deal, with the team that barely a month ago beat him out for the Stanley Cup, and on a one year deal that was right in the range of what Pittsburgh was offering? To borrow a quote from Adam and Jamie of Mythbusters... "There's your problem..." Signing with the team that eliminated your team? That hurts. Signing a deal that Pittsburgh would have matched given the opportunity? That stings. But the true salt in the wound for Pittsburgh's fans is this line by Hossa when he signed with Detroit... "I want to have a best chance to win the Stanley Cup. I feel like Detroit is the team." That's just a slap in the face, no matter how you look at it. I read a few times in that thread about how Hossa "held the Pens hostage" which caused them to miss out on some big name players, Rolston in particular. Here's my problem with the statement. Yes, he said he wouldn't mind playing there. However, the fact that he refused to sign any contract and wanted to test free agency should have given Shero and Co. a clue that he could be leaving. So, why not have a backup plan in place? When Schneider didn't take Detroit's contract offer and signed with the Ducks, how long did it take to get a replacement? An hour, two hours? Yet, the Pens seemed completely blindsided by Hossa leaving and it took them a few days to find replacements. Edit: Actually, I was wrong, Hossa signed in Detroit on the 2nd and on the 3rd the Pens signed Satan. Edited August 11, 2008 by therock48880
therock48880 14 Report post Posted August 11, 2008 Let's look at the Pens moves this offseason: Lost Hossa, gained Satan. Advantage Hossa Lost Laraque, gained Goddard. Advantage Laraque Lost Ruutu, gained Cooke. Advantage Ruutu Lost Roberts gained Fedotenko. Advantage Fedotenko Lost Hall Lost Malone Lost Conklin I can't imagine how they'll be as good as last year. It helps them that the East is not a terribly strong conference.
LeftWinger 5,152 Report post Posted August 11, 2008 ...so what if Babcock said somethig to Hossa. "Great Series, you almost tied it there, I'd love to have ya here!" Big deal! ...anyway Pitsburgh fans are Steeler fans first then Penguins fans, they don't even look at the Pens until February. (must be nice to have a good Football team! LOL!) ...anyway, we may singning the same tune if he leaves in 09. He's gonna have to take a huge cut in order to stay here after we sign Zetterberg and Franzen. Will he? Doubt it, even if we repeat I think he'll cash in his worth to someone who can give him $10 million (or whatever the max will be)
pjgj13 30 Report post Posted August 11, 2008 I am willing to bet the Pens don't even make the playoffs next year, even playing in the weaker east. On the other hand, barring injuries the Wings should have an AWESOME season and I can't wait until hockey starts. This time I get to see them much more as I am moving back to the 'burbs in a few short weeks. CAN'T WAIT!!!

They've still got some very young, talented players, but I think can't see them being as good as last year. In all honesty, I think Dallas would have beaten them last year and possible Anaheim and SJ too.
Dabura 12,232 Report post Posted August 11, 2008 Unless the Habs nab Sundin and Price has a stellar season, the Pens are still the team to beat in the East. Which, granted, isn't saying much.

A couple good pick ups this off season for them doesn't really compare to the big losses they endured.
stud_defenseman 1 Report post Posted August 11, 2008 well, considering that both Crosby and Malkin are probably going to continue to improve I could see them being around the same spot they were last year.

I know the Wings played them in the Finals so they are hated a bit more now, generally speaking, but that's a bit of a stretch even though they have lost some personnel. It isn't impossible or unfathomable to think that such a thing could happen, I know it happened to New Jersey one year after the won one of their recent Cups, but I don't think there is going to be much of a dropoff with their team, even with how "weak" the EC might be as next season as you stated. thedisappearer 291 Report post Posted August 14, 2008 Three things I'm pretty sure about... First, I have no doubt that Pens will make the playoffs. Their core is pretty solid for a weak eastern division. Secondly, I have no expectations of Hossa sticking around after this year. He's going to bolt for more money. Thirdly, Holland and co will have a plan for the '10-'11 season. (2010 -2011 --sounds so futuristic) Yes. Yes. Yes.
