Doggy 130 Report post Posted August 28, 2008 The Sens will probably match. He's a great young player and they need him on their D big time.
seeinred 1,488 Report post Posted August 28, 2008 I wouldn't mind seeing him end up in Phoenix. Anything that Helps Jokinen make the playoffs.
Guest Dump-N-Thump Report post Posted August 29, 2008 Signing in Pheonix would make that Jokinen trade look that much better. Boynton and Ballard is a big loss, Meszaros will just soften the blow.
CenterIce 83 Report post Posted August 29, 2008 The Sens will probably match. He's a great young player and they need him on their D big time. The Senators were only offering him 3.5 million per year. That is a large jump to match that.
Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted August 29, 2008 They need to match that offer. With Redden gone, he will be shouldering a heap of defensive responsibility, and he's the type of player to be able to handle it. He was my diamond in the rough last fantasy season. Doggy 130 Report post Posted August 29, 2008 (edited) The Senators were only offering him 3.5 million per year. That is a large jump to match that. Not really. It's business and he's a RFA. Of course Murray lowballed him. See the above post from Echolalia. They can't afford not to match. Edited August 29, 2008 by Doggy
Kp-Wings 3 Report post Posted August 29, 2008 Signing in Pheonix would make that Jokinen trade look that much better. Boynton and Ballard is a big loss, Meszaros will just soften the blow. Boynton sucked in Phoenix, and hasn't done anything productive since the 2003-2004 season. The Coyotes tried to get rid of him a couple of times last season. Murray didn't really lowball him. Talk on the Sens was that Meszaros was crap this season. And he's definitely not worth 5M per, especially when Vlasic, who is better than Meszaros, just signed for 4 years at 3.1M. By of course offer sheets have to be overpaying by nature. RedWingedKitten 9 Report post Posted August 29, 2008 Well we know someone is going to over pay for him. What's the compensation again? A 1st, 2nd, and 3rd I believe?
Doggy 130 Report post Posted August 29, 2008 (edited) Thats all Meszaros is worth right now. When it comes to a 22 year old though, 5+ year contract lengths also must take into account their worth in a few years time. The guy is just a pup and IMO, it's very likely $5m/yr will be pretty cheap in 2-5 years. But we'll see what eventuates. It's always a gamble. While this is true, many recent contract signings for RFA dmen can't be overlooked: Burns - 3.5 per Vlasic - 3.1 per Weber - 4.5 per Suter - 3.5 per ALL these guys are better than Meszaros and are the same age, and Murray was right to offer Meszaros in the neighborhood of 3.5M. You're entitled to your opinion, but I strongly disagree that they're all better. Meszaros is really good dude. Seriously.

As a rookie. Hes regressed every year to the point where hes a good young Dmen with potential. However, the guys I listed above are without doubt better than Meszaros at this point. YoungGuns1340 1 Report post Posted August 29, 2008 P.S. The frontrunner is neither Phoenix nor Atlanta, but Tampa, and the deal is rumored to be unofficial as of yet until Tampa Bay acquires a third rounder, which could happen shortly and is likely to be the hold up.. How do you mean "frontrunner"? And do you have a source or link? You sound like Eklund lol.

Possibly, but I believe Kronwall is better than Mesz, and is only making $3 per the next 5 years. Mesz @ $5 is outrageous.
Doggy 130 Report post Posted August 29, 2008 Possibly, but I believe Kronwall is better than Mesz, and is only making $3 per the next 5 years. Mesz @ $5 is outrageous. Yeah, but that's not really an apt comparison. Kronwall was signed when he wasn't as good as he is now and had been through a terrible injury run. His seemingly fragile body caused his value to drop. Hell, at the time when he was offered that contract, it was considered pretty risky.

Tampa can't be the frontrunner. Meszaros is a defenseman, and Tampa doesn't sign defenseman.

The frontrunner is neither Phoenix nor Atlanta, but Tampa, and the deal is rumored to be unofficial as of yet until Tampa Bay acquires a third rounder, which could happen shortly and is likely to be the hold up.. They would have to re-acquire their own 3rd rounder from Pittsburgh, which they gave up for Ryan Malone's rights. It seems the most likely route at this point is that Meszaros will be traded to Tampa Bay, instead. Edited August 29, 2008 by MacK_Attack

MacK_Attack 108 Report post Posted August 29, 2008 (edited) Here is the link TSN Good deal by the Sens IMO. Meszaros wanted far too much. $4 million per year is pretty reasonable for a defenceman of his calibre these days. As for the trade, I think I would've rather had the draft pick compensation from the offer sheet. Edited August 30, 2008 by MacK_Attack
