MacK_Attack 108 Report post Posted October 7, 2008 (edited) The four players placed yesterday on waivers will know their fates in about half an hour. So far, two players placed on waivers today, both from Toronto. - Staffan Kronwall - Boyd Devereaux Any player not making an NHL roster that requires waivers must be waived today. UPDATE: - Aaron Downey - Peter Schaefer - Matt Pettinger - Jason Krog - Kyle McLaren - Cory Murphy - Jeremy Reich - Nate Thompson Edited October 7, 2008 by MacK_Attack
The Mule 0 Report post Posted October 7, 2008 Devereaux is a decent fourth liner. He isn't all that skilled, but he's fast, and he works hard.
Aussie_Wing 354 Report post Posted October 7, 2008 Boyd the Void! Let's get him back! Staffan Kronwall placed on waivers? I was only just reading some Toronto fan who said he would finally get the ice-time he deserves this season to prove himself...

MacK_Attack 108 Report post Posted October 7, 2008 Devereaux is a decent fourth liner. He isn't all that skilled, but he's fast, and he works hard. Which is why I suspect somebody will take a chance with him. His cap hit is only $575k, so he's dirt cheap.
PROBIE4PREZ 58 Report post Posted October 7, 2008 Staffan must be out of AHL options and must gothrough the waivers in order to be demoted now? thats strange it seems like hes been in the ahl for years now ...

I was only just reading some Toronto fan who said he would finally get the ice-time he deserves this season to prove himself... It's clear that Toronto fan had no idea what he/she was talking about. With Kaberle, Kubina, Finger, Frogren, Stralman, White, Van Ryn, Colaiaccovo, and even Schenn ahead of Kronwall on their depth chart, there was never even a slight chance he was going to make the team. Opie 308 Report post Posted October 7, 2008 (edited) Sucks for Downey, but it's the right move IMO. The only option the team had really, with Mac being injured he is in the same boat as Howard you can not send an injured player down. Downey had to go, if they were both healthy the same move may have been made but one never knows. If D-mac is healthy again and stays up one can assume that was going to be the move all along, but as soon as Mac is healthy he could switch with Downey, who really knows. Edit: Peter Schaefer waived by Boston. A decent player that I have got to think will be back on another team soon. Edited October 7, 2008 by Opie
96warrior 11 Report post Posted October 7, 2008 http://redwingscorner.blogspot.com/ Downey's reaction Forward Aaron Downey was put on 24-hour waivers. Here's a few things he said as he left JLA this morning ... "If I've got to go down to Grand Rapids, I go down to Grand Rapids. Whatever happens, happens." "Business is business. I know I had a good camp." "I feel like I'm a top-five enforcer in the game."
BigTex 1 Report post Posted October 7, 2008 (edited) Helm is goin to GR yah for us who live in West Michigan ? I hope you didn't come to this conclusion based on what's been said in this thread. Can you attach a link that proves this? If so then all the pieces are in place (Lieno stays up with Meech, McCarty on IR, Quincy being traded or sent through waivers, Ericsson sent down most likely). OK, I found the link about Helm on RW corner. http://redwingscorner.blogspot.com/ Edited October 7, 2008 by BigTex
Guest E_S_A_D Report post Posted October 7, 2008 Sucks for Downey, but it's the right move IMO. Good afternoon. Yes, my first post, but I had to register on this board as a long time Wing's fan. I think some posters clearly are missing the point of having Downey or such a player on the roster. I have been following the Wings for almost 30 years, season ticket holder for 12 years, and my family has been attending Wings games since early days at the Olympia. However, these posts that it's a 'good move' to send Downey to GR is simply hogwash. When your own Captain says they appreciate having Downey on the bench, it's silly to me that he gets ignored. This year more than ANY other year the Wings will have huge targets on their backs from opposing teams. They'll look to crush the Wings physically and impose a gameplan to throw their finesse system off-track. Will it take Holland and Babcock to have a key player injured from a Cam Janssen style hit until the Wings then realize they made a mistake sending Downey to GR? Silly... Who got injured in 06-07 because Downey wasn't in the lineup, you are painting a worst case scenario as though it is sure thing that will happen. As a long time fan you should have noticed that the way to beat the Wings for the better part of the last 11 years was to rough them up. Didn't do anybody any good last year (note Downey did not play in the post season), or the year before. Downey is sent down due to Mac being injured, and a bunch of guys nursing sore groins, if Homer, Dats, Hossa, or any other forward goes down Babs is going to need Leino not Downey. Howard and Mac both are eating up roster spots as is Cheli to a lesser degree. You can not send some one down who is injured that leaves Babs and co with one forward spot. It is a very smart move to put Downey in the A, when all of the roster spots are open again I am sure things will change. However, because Downey isn't on the opening day roster doesn't mean he won't play all year!

GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted October 7, 2008 So you guys don't acknowledge Downey or McCarty's presence on the team, yet you all think Kopecky is somehow important. Good thing the members of the team don't think the same way you do, or else Downey and Mac would become bellboys for the rest of the players rather than being teammates. StormJH1 231 Report post Posted October 7, 2008 Will it take Holland and Babcock to have a key player injured from a Cam Janssen style hit until the Wings then realize they made a mistake sending Downey to GR? Silly... While you're certainly not alone in having that perspective on the value of enforcers, the idea that having a player like Downey "insulates" you from cheap shots and injuries is misguided and antiquated. Ask the Minnesota Wild how safe they feel under the "security blanket" of Derek Boogaard (arguably the most feared goon in the league), not to mention Todd Fedoruk and Chris Simon in 07-08. People took cheap shots (and injured) Kim Johnsson and Mikko Koivu. And when they got the playoffs against Colorado, none of the dirty players on the Avs were man enough to drop the gloves with any of the Minnesota goons, which made retribution impossible without taking an instigator penalty/suspension. The Wings have proven that you need tough players that can also play the game--like a Shanahan, McCarty (of yesterday), etc. There may be other reason for having goons (fun factor, team motivation, revenge, etc.), but it's not a viable or necessary strategy in today's NHL. Opie 308 Report post Posted October 7, 2008 We had 2 enforcers on the roster last year for our championship. Did you forget? Thanks for answering my question. No I did not forget that Downey was in the press box and Mac was riding Pine for 55 minutes a game. I also did not forget that the past three years have garnered very similar regular season results (which would be when Downey did play) and that the last two years the wings have made it to the WCF or beyond. So what was your point? Weren't Ritolla, Howard and Ericsson on the post season roster too, they had as much impact as Downey in the post season, was it fun watching them sit in the box as well. You are also forgetting that this is the opening day roster, nothing says none of the guys will go up or down. And at this point in time Mac, Howard and Cheli(can't anyway) are injured and can not be moved to the AHL. Thus there is only one forward spot open at this time, and with all of the forwards that are not waiver exempt, the Wings can not make a move to bring up a forward without some one having to clear waivers, the waiver clearing process is not immediate and if a couple of hours before the game Hossa, Homer, or Dats say their groin is still too sore, Bab has to play the 13th forward, if that is Downey the wings are screwed, if Downey were taking the spot of Malts or Kopecky that is a different story and I am all for it. However the Wings need to leave the most versatile forward they can on the roster. Like it or not that is not Downey. Sometimes your posts make it seem like you think the Wings are not playing an enforcer to intentionally and personally piss you off.
