USA/Canada Olympic Team Predictions...

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

The Winter Olympics are really only less than 18 months away, and I'd say the teams that we make now with the present best players, could be virtually identical to the best players in 2010.

I don't want to assemble lines or anything, just the players on the teams. 13 forwards, 7 defensemen, and 3 goaltenders. I also decided to appoint 3 assistants and 1 captain for each team.

Canada

Offense - Crosby, Iginla (A), Heatley, Spezza, Nash, Lecavalier, Morrow (A), M. Richards, Getzlaf, E. Staal, Toews, St. Louis, Horton

Defense - Phaneuf, Pronger (A), Niedermayer [C], Bouwmeester, Regehr, Green, Jovanovski

Goal - Luongo, Brodeur, Turco

USA

Offense - Kane, Pominville, Stastny, Brown, Parise, Gomez, Drury (A), Mueller, O'Sullivan, Malone, Tkachuk [C], Kessel, Rolston (A)

Defense - Rafalski (A), Whitney, E. Johnson, Liles, Corvo, Suter, Komisarek

Goal - Miller, Dipietro, Thomas

I agree with your lists for the most part, but your missing Joe Thornton for Canada, and i also think Brent Burns and Marc Staal should get a chance to make the team over Boumeester and Jovanovski. Also i think Sakic will be there for the same reason Lemeiux was there in 02.

Only difference on Canada I see would be, Brent Burns being on the team, and Sakic. If he's still around, Stevie will pick him, and honestly, If Niedermayer is named Captain, it'll make me sick. Iginla, Crosby, Richards, Morrow, Lecavalier or Sakic would all make better captains IMO.

As far as the States are concerned, damn, they have alot of good young players in the NHL.

Sakic might not be around in 2010, but Thornton ought to be. I don't know if Toews will be ready (even at the end of next season), but Yzerman is really high on this kid, so he will be there. Not sure if Nash is complete enough of a player to warrant attendance. Pronger's not getting an A on his jersey; I think Richards is the guy to give it to. Crosby, maybe, too. Gretzky is probably going to lobby hard for Doan to be on this team -- I could definitely see him going instead of Horton. And Derek Roy could very well earn himself a spot, too.

Crosby-Iginla-Lecavalier. Spezza-Heatley-Staal. Thornton-Toews-Roy. Doan-Richards-Morrow. Getzlaf? Horton?

Look for Duncan Keith to be on this team. Don't count out Chris Phillips completely, either. I think Pronger is probably going to make it, but Jovanovski might be the guy left off.

Keith, Phaneuf, Niedermayer, Bouwmeester, Regehr, Green. Pronger? Jovanovski?

Paul Martin will be on team USA in 2010.

Wow, he''s really going to have to train hard for that. I lost track of him after he was replaced as Canada's Prime Minister but I guess he's been using all his free time to learn how to skate and get into shape. Who's he been playing with since he left office?

Wonder if Cheli will still be around to play next year

I think the only reason Cheli hung around this year was for the Winter Classic. For some reason I really believe this will be his last season. I didn't feel it last year.

Parise-Stastny-Brown

O'Sullivan-Dubinsky-Kane

Kessel-Gomez-Pominville

Rolston-Mueller-Drury

extras: Higgins, TJ Oshie, Cole

Rafalski-Martin

E. Johnson -J. Johnson

Komisarek/Whitney

extra: JM Liles

Miller

Dipietro

Conklin

I really like this lineup for the US. More grit than Team Canada and some big hitters on D (Komisarek and JJ). A lot of youth but if they play up to their potential they should definitely be in the running for medals.

what about a couple of Boston boys, anyone think Marc Savard might be given a go? will Milan Lucic be ready by then?

Savard is great, but the Canadian lineup has superior set-up men (Crosby, Spezza, Thornton, Getzlaf). I actually really like Savard [in fact, I own a jersey with his name stitched on the back) but am realistic that Spezza and Getzlaf will be entering their primes, Thornton has just been better [and has better size/strength], and Crosby is the undeniable #1 center. There were only 11 Canadian 30-goal scorers last year and 11 guys with 50 assists. Canada only needs four of the latter category (Crosby didn't have 50 assists due to injury). The others will be Thornton, Spezza, possibly Getzlaf, possibly St. Louis. The fourth line for Canada will probably be Morrow, Richards, and Doan and will be a shutdown line. Savard definitely does not fit that role. Of Spezza, Getzlaf, Thornton, and Savard, keep in mind that Savard is the oldest and actually a couple years older than Thornton. Thornton will be 31 for the Olympics and the others will be mid- to late-20s. Perfect timing for the Games -- in their prime and hungry.

I am sorry Getslaf over Savard, come on. I know this board loves him because he is North American Grit/toughness grrrr but come on, Savard is on a similar level to Dats when it comes to setup, something Getslaf is no where near!

The problem with Savard is that with Crosby & Thornton playing a bulk of the minutes, and getting basically all of the PP time, there isn't a lot of ice-time to be there for another playmaker. They'll be looking for more character guys on the bottom-two lines, guys who will kill penalties and provide some grit. Since this is being played on North American ice, there will be a intentional move to have guys on the team with some sandpaper.

Guys like Morrow, Doan, Sakic, Smyth, Richards (both Mike & Brad) and Staal (Eric) are probably going to be considered before Savard.
