From what I've seen this season (and really, the last several seasons, as I think this has been a rising trend that is only now starting to become fairly obvious), a lot of these late calls are "anomalous"; they're not consistent with the calls that have been made through the first two and a half periods. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that's why people are so upset over them -- they're made in response to the scoreboard.

This season it seems like the standard for penalties is directly related to the goal differential, especially in the third period.
