What do the Wings need?

Rate this topic

With the Wings being a team better known for building through strong drafting, what do the lets go wings faithfuls think the wings are gonna need in this years off-season? There's enough speculation about signing free agents and salary cap. I'd like to know what is needed in the entry draft....and if the wings at this point in time have a first round pick?? Fire away.

I'm sure Holland and co. have different priorities, but one thing lacking in our system is any semblance of a power forward - a big guy who could pan out as a physical top sixer.

Ultimately those guys come at a premium though, but I also think the Wings should trade up in the draft. I'm not convinced we're going stay lucky with our later draft picks. WIth the added emphasis on scouting in the new NHL, it seems like teams are taking their later draft picks more seriously and doing their homework. Itd be nice to have a first round gem in the system.

So yeah..What do the WIngs need? How about Zack Kassian? Other than that I think the Wings are pretty stacked in all other areas and might just be best served going with the BPA if they cant find a power forward.

Nik Kronwall was a first rounder. Besides Heatley and Gaborik he was right up there for top players. For Dmen he was competing with Klesla, Volchenkov and hainsey. Id say his playoff performance last year tops all of those guys.

Heaton pretty much summed it up. If you're not drafting in the top 5 (top 10 in a really deep year), you take the best available player. Guys drafted after #10 RARELY step in and play in the NHL right away, they're usually a year or two away at least. So your team's needs are different from draft day '09 until your late first-rounder is ready to play...

If you're short on prospects at a position, you can always narrow your list down, but it's hard to draft specific types of players. That's much easier done through free agency.

power forward, someone about 6'2 and 210 pounds that can notch about 30 a year on a first or second line

Thats exactly what I was thinking. Sounds like you'd like Zack Kassian too. Some say hes the next Milan Lucic. If the Wings need to clear cap space to re-sign guys like Franzen, Hudler, and Hank, then Id ship off Filppula and our late first to a team like Florida for their 1st, which would likely be about 8-12th overall. That should be high enough to land Kassian. The kids already 6'3, 205.

What...point...are you trying to make...that relates to my post?

The Red Wings system puts emphasis on quickness and the ability to move the puck around. Unfortunately the 6'3" players who already possess these attributes will most likely be gone by the time the Wings hit the podium, leaving them with one or two solid picks followed by 6 rounds of looking between couch cushions in Europe for small-but-skilled players who fit the mold. I imagine they would be most interested in top six-capable wingers and defensemen, considering some combination of Datsyuk/Zetterberg/Filppula/Hudler/Cleary/Franzen/Helm should be taking care of center for a while, and there are a good half-dozen goalie prospects floating around with realistic NHL chances. Hopefully Hedman will fall to the bottom of the first round and everything will work itself out.

Canadian skilled powerforwards are impossible to get at 28-30th overall, they are all picked before... european is the way to do it, even though detroit should get more canadian unfluenses.. soon draper and maltby is gone and poooof not many canadian forwards left.

"wings need a first round gem"

Yes. They need a first round gem. What does that have to do with drafting one a few years ago? Besides. I was referring to forwards only. I dont see Dmen as a wings need. And those first round gem forwards usually come in the first 15 overall or so.

This is a thread about what the Wings need. Not what they will likely end up with. They could definitely use some more balance up front.

defense and grinders.

Lids is not a lock to be here past 2010. the grind-line is awefully long in the tooth as well.

I really think the Wings are just going to carry on with a top 4 of Stuart, Ericsson, Kronwall, and Lidstrom. Because Lidstrom is irreplaceable, it might be a good idea to bulk up in terms of our 2-5 Dmen. Although Lidstrom was taken in the 3rd round, its pretty unlikely that that sort of pick is going to be replicated. We'd likely have to go after Hedman if we wanted another Lidstrom, and the Wings dont have the assets to trade for that pick.

As for grinders, you can find some pretty good ones on the free market. But we could stand to draft another Abdelkader for a future grind line, yeah.

Where's Rafalski going to go?

They need a euro goalie. Imagine if the wings had Backstrom from the Wild. Howard isn't the answer...

Yeah then we can just cut the whole English crap all together, let the team speak Swedish during the games :)
