edicius 3,269 Report post Posted January 10, 2009 I'd just like to see Columbus finally make the playoffs. Wouldn't even care if they didn't win a single game once they got there, but just making it there would be huge for them. Yeah, yeah, they're in our division...but c'mon, the only team in the league right now without a single playoff appearance? Give 'em a go.
Hockeytown0001 7,652 Report post Posted January 10, 2009 All I know is that Mason had better be heading to Montreal for the young stars game
Hockeytown Red Wings 245 Report post Posted January 10, 2009 I'd just like to see Columbus finally make the playoffs. Wouldn't even care if they didn't win a single game once they got there, but just making it there would be huge for them. Yeah, yeah, they're in our division...but c'mon, the only team in the league right now without a single playoff appearance? Give 'em a go. So would I. This city loves hockey more than you think. They would absolutely go nuts. And I'd also like someone to tell me to "f*** off" or something for wearing my Wings jerseys around town. Just once. Been wearing Wings jerseys down here for five years and never gotten anything but "Go Wings!" comments.
BuckeyeWingsfan80 209 Report post Posted January 10, 2009 That can be deceiving. And I'm not trying to take anything away from Mason. Like I said, if you didn't know any better, you'd probably think he was a veteran with the way he looks in net. I just think the way the Jackets have been playing defense lately has been beyond impressive. And considering Hitchock's first goal in coming to the Jackets was to turn a guy like Rick Nash into a defensively responsible player, I wouldn't be surprised if the defense of the Jackets is insulating Mason in the same way that the Wings defense frequently does for our goaltenders. Now, mind you I've only seen Mason play twice - once against the Sharks and of course against the Wings - but in those games, the shots taken were almost entirely from the outside, and the Jackets defense did a great job of keeping the opposition there. two points I'd like to add for you since I've seen him probably 20 times this year since I live near Columbus.... 1. The BJs defense plays much more aggressively when he's in net vs. when LeClaire is in the net. They seem to have more confidence in him and they also appear to have some sort of defensive rhythm that I saw even during the first 2 periods of the CBJ-Detroit game. 2. While a lot of the shots he faces are from the outside, Washington started crashing the net starting in the 2nd last night and he still stoned them. San Jose did the same thing a couple weeks ago. If the CBJ ever get anyone healthy and keep them that way, they'll likely make the playoffs AND if they trade well and get someone to actually compliment Rick Nash without giving anything up they could go pretty far in the playoffs too since they play defense so well. they do kind of remind me of Calgary in 2003/4. Doc Holiday 0 Report post Posted January 10, 2009 Perhaps Mason is the Dan Ellis of the 2009 playoffs.
The Mule 0 Report post Posted January 10, 2009 If Mason continues to play the way he has (leading the league in shutouts, GAA, and SV%), he is a lock for both the Calder and Vezina trophies. If the league were to not award him either, assuming his stats stay the same, I would consider it a travesty.
Bluedevils_13 0 Report post Posted January 10, 2009 So would I. I've gotten a boo once at a Kroger in Columbus wearing my Wings' jersey, but the person was cool and talked to me about hockey. Columbus is a pretty good hockeytown IMO, there was always good energy at the Jackets games. The Jackets may be the last team to have made the playoffs, but they won't be the last team to win a playoff round, or even game.
TheOwl 77 Report post Posted January 10, 2009 You would think Columbus would be in a play-off position right now with goaltending like this. They should trade Leclaire for a top 6-forward and keep Mason longterm.
WeBleedRed 8 Report post Posted January 11, 2009 I'm from London. I watched him, Perry, Nash, all those guys play here all the time. I still hate Perry, but Mason was a diamond waiting to be found. He played every damn game like it was game 7. I loved watching him!

They should trade Leclaire for a top 6-forward and keep Mason longterm. Leclaire wouldn't land them a top-6 forward, unless it was a guy like Eric Cole or Miro Satan who are having rough seasons. Yeah, yeah, they're in our division...but c'mon, the only team in the league right now without a single playoff appearance? Give 'em a go. I think a lot of people feel that way. Like someone else said, hockey is well-supported in Columbus. I'd rather see them in the playoffs than a team like the Ducks. They win the cup and no one cares. If the Jackets got into the playoffs, that city would go crazy. Especially since hockey doesn't conflict with the college football season.
cnot19 191 Report post Posted January 11, 2009 I like Mason after having watched him a couple times. He seesm to be the real deal. I find myself rooting for Columbus a little bit more. They havent made the playoffs but are in the hnt this year. It would good for a team that had been supported well in its early years finally reward the fans with a playoff season. C-TownWing 0 Report post Posted January 11, 2009 Very true. I'll add Andrew Raycroft to that mix. I was convinced he was the real deal after witnessing him shut us out his rookie year. Admittedly, it's a nice story, but I'm still rooting against Columbus, I can't stand anything about them.
b.shanafan14 733 Report post Posted January 11, 2009 If this kid keeps this up and doesn't win the Calder AND Vezina it would be a joke. Seeing him play the other night against the Wings was awesome, kid has a bright future (except for the whole Blue Jackets thing )
BuckeyeWingsfan80 209 Report post Posted January 14, 2009 Mason actually let a bad one in tonight. Someone from Colorado shot a wrister in from about 25 feet and he whiffed with the glove. A vet probably tries to put his body behind the glove. But then Columbus gets 2 goals in about 20 seconds to make it 4-2. Colorado just scored again, but I hate Colorado to the point that I hope Columbus wins 10-
