YoungGuns1340 1 Report post Posted February 6, 2009 Didn't want to make a new thread, so I'm bumping this one. Alexander Ovechkin - 23 years old, and he scored his 200th career goal tonight.

Coolio Mendez 7 Report post Posted February 6, 2009 Which one would I prefer on my team? Crosby. He's ranked 2nd by Central Scouting (behind Iginla) and Ovechkin is ranked 5th. People say Ovechkin is more entertaining..well, so was Eddie Shack. So far throughout their careers, Ovechkin's 'entertainment' hasn't resulted in more points on the board than Crosby. It hasn't resulted in a Stanley Cup final appearance. Ovechkin leads the league in giveaways (2 years straight, that is never a good sign) Ovechkin leads the league in shots, and his own GM said on Saturday that Ovechkin's inability to see other players on the ice has cost the Capitals at least 3 games this year In the end it all comes down to personal preferences, and 29 of the 30 NHL GMs prefer Crosby to Ovechkin (and that 29 includes George McPhee). Crosby merchandise outsells Ovechkin merchandise. In games between the two, Crosby is outscoring Ovechkin 23 points to 15 Crosby's career ppg is 1.36, Ovechkin's is 1.27 Crosby even had more votes for the all-star game from DC area IP addresses than Ovechkin. So, I have failed to find a reason to take Ovechkin and don't give me the nonsense that he hits more - several of Ovechkin's hits result in giveaways. Hitting is one thing, knowing when to hit is another. Recently Ovechkin passed Yzerman on the career hit list (Yzerman had 486 career hits) ...........does that mean I should take Ovechkin over Yzerman............again, not going to happen. Ovechkin is a highly skilled skater. He has a very good shot and is an excellent skater. He is still a lousy skater in traffic, and he is considered by NHL defencemen as easy to strip the puck from (see giveaways). He is far from a complete player as he is considered very selfish, and doesn't have a good read on the ice.
WeBleedRed 8 Report post Posted February 6, 2009 I just did some quick math here. the "great" one scored 0.60 goals per game over his 1,487 for a total of 894 Ovechkin is at 0.675 per game over 296 games. If the O scores at this rate, for say, g's games played, he will have a total of 1,004 goals.... I know that's going out on a big limb, but still... that's insane. Ovie, despite all his speed and goal-scoring ability, is not a very complete player and many, many times per game he makes wrong decisions (mostly because he refuses to pass) which results in giveaways or lost opportunites for the Caps. But sometimes it seems like all people see is the amount of goals scored. I'd personally take Datsyuk over either Crosby or Ovie though.
NeverForgetMac25 483 Report post Posted February 6, 2009 A hat-trick against Ottawa is akin to scoring three goals on the special kid at recess. Truth or not aside, that's hilarious.
Coolio Mendez 7 Report post Posted February 7, 2009 Thank you. I've been saying this, but haven't had the stats to back it up. That would make for a much more interesting trade, Ovie for Datsyuk. I believe that Datsyuk fits in better to Detroit's 'team first' attitude and Ovechkin fits in better to Washington's 'Ovechkin-centric' offense. What would Detroit gain with Ovechkin? - a few years What would Detroit lose with Ovechkin - bigger cap hit - less disciplined play (having Hossa is bad enough) - less defensive skill What would Washington gain with Datysuk - smaller cap hit - defensive skill up front What would Washington lose with Datsyuk - a few years - some offense The more I think about this, this is one of those trades that could possibly be a lose-lose for both teams. Both teams have their offense primarily driven around these two players. Datsyuk feeds Zetterberg and the two of them have an uncanny ability to find one another. Backstrom feeds Ovechkin and they two have an uncanny ability to find one another. IFF Datsyuk plays on a line with Semin and Backstrom both, then this deal would work out well for Washington because Ovechkin and Zetterberg would never complement one another (nor would Ovechkin and Franzen). Dastyuk is the better skater, the better puckhandler, and the smarter player. He's a team first player. Ovechkin is a faster skater, and has a better shot, and is far away a flashier player. But whereas Datsyuk leads the NHL in takeaways, Ovechkin leads in giveaways. Datsyuk is the type of player that all teams would love (if he could only fight than he would rival Iginla as the leagues premier player) and he currently excels in the team first dynamic that Detroit has. If Detroit had a bona fide goal scorer in the Ovechkin/Kovalchuk/Heatley mode, Datsyuk would a perennial contender for the Art Ross. Ovechkin on the other hand is not as well loved around the league as Washington fans would have the world believe. He is prone to taking nnecessary hits (as per his own coach and GM), he is prone to taking unnecessary shots (as evidenced by his league leading missed shots total), and he has led the NHL in giveaways two years running. Fortunately, he is deadly around the net, and has matured into one of the great goal scorers. As long as there is someone to get the puck to him, he'll find a way to put it in. But, this is a trade both teams would lose as the effect of losing your offensive cornerstone would be difficult to overcome despite the trade being a straight up of two superstars. I can go on...... stuck in socal 56 Report post Posted February 7, 2009 Crosby can't even play a whole season. Crosbv is too injury prone and he's a huge whiner and I can't stand it. Ovechkin is the best player in the league and I would trade anyone from the wings for him.
Chase 0 Report post Posted February 7, 2009 Didn't want to make a new thread, so I'm bumping this one. Alexander Ovechkin - 23 years old, and he scored his 200th career goal tonight. Thats crazy. When we played the caps last, Ken and Mick were talkin about the possibilty of him breaking Gretzkys record for goals scored. I think it is possible, for sure. WingsFanInDC 0 Report post Posted February 7, 2009 I see ovechkin play at every caps home game. Whenever he gets the puck on a breakaway, everyone, and i mean just about EVERYONE jumps to their feet to see what he'll do next. He's unpredictable. and yes, he does play good defence. He even does a great job that. I can't explain how much of a turnaround he's done for the caps. Despite his 124 million dollar contract, he's earned every penny of it as far as I'm concerned. Not only that, he's already on par to break his own record for the number of goals scored per year. Having met this guy, he's a pretty humble kid. One thing that I like about him, he doesnt whine about every little thing, unlike Cindy does. Ovie plays a CLEAN game. When I saw the Det vs Caps game, i saw two highly skilled teams playing their best. They both played a clean game. Ovie for MPV. It's already a fact.
