Trade Deadline Thoughts - Not Wings Related.

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

So, as of today, 4 points separate 6th and 14th place in the West. I can't remember a race this tight. The East is tight as well.

My question? How much does this affect the trade deadline? My thoughts are that this could be the slowest deadline ever. Too many potential buyers, not enough sellers.

Thoughts???

An inactive trade deadline bodes well for the Wings. They don't have the cap space most other playoff-calibre teams do.

I agree.

The other scenario is that teams don't go the rental route as per usual, rather make real hockey deals -swaping "needs", so to speak.

For example, listening to Holland during that tsn 1-on-1, he alluded to a straight up trade of salries with another team. Not to turn this into a Wings trade deadline thread, but I'd like to see a deal where the Wings get the third or forth line grit that they need and in return team X get's maybe some scoring depth or a veteran presence. You know, hockey deals.

I know you didn't want to make this a Wings trade deadline thread, but who did you have in mind? I most certainly wouldn't be opposed to that given the lack of all-around production the Wings' 4th line has had this season. They've seemed to ramp it up slightly as of late, but its still something I'm keeping an eye on.

Not Wings related, but the Caps will probably be looking for a backup behind Theodore as Brent Johnson recovers from surgery. I wouldn't be suprised to see them pick up Curtis Sanford, that is if Columbus doesn't ****** him up first.

Does Columbus really need another goalie?

Was just browsing the trading deadline page at TSN (link), and a couple names caught my eye ...

Chris Pronger ... I don't think we can afford him, nor do I think ANaheim would trade him to us, but do you guys really think he might be moved? I hadn't heard his name before ...

Keith Tkachuk ... he's always seems to be on the move at the trading deadline, but do you guys think he could help us? Obviously past his prime, but he brings some size, grit, and a veteran presence. I realize he's not the ideal "hungry" veteran, unless we're talking about a buffet, but anyone think he has anything to offer us?

if this continues i dont see many big trades happening, for the wings anyway it would just be a little change i think, one because we're up against the cap and too many other teams are afraid to make a trade that could hurt them.

My dream trade right now is Flippula for Michael Frolik of the Panthers, this kids brings a lot of what Flip has, but is a better scorer from what i see, decent in his own end, and is still on a entry level contract . Florida could use someone like Flip, he does have a cup ring, and could bring a more defensive posture to their team (they already dont score a lot). Best of all, it would free up around 2 million in cap space for the playoffs (meaning we could bring up Larrson and Leino or Howard for the playoff run).

I would love to see these lines in that case

Homer-Z-Hossa

Lenio-Dats-Franzen

Frolik-Cleary-Hudler

Sammy-Draper-Helm

Well, there's a few ways to go IMO.

Samuelson + a 3rd for Adam Mair?

(the 3rd rounder because Sammy's a UFA and Mair has another year at .75K)

Filpulla for Anthony Stewart and a 2nd round pick?

(Detroit dumps salary in preparation for this summer's blitz, and gains size and a decent draft pick. Stewart's an RFA who should make a third of what Flip makes now.)

I wouldn't make both deals. But one maybe. I dunno?

What are your thoughts Mac?

He could definitely garner some assets if he were moved. At this point, Anaheim is going to have to more or less makeover their entire defense, and Pronger's value at the deadline + an additional year at a reasonable price could be the guy that puts the team over the hump for the next year. If they can trade him for a good young Dman, and maybe a 2nd liner to boot (with some balancing required), it wouldn't be such a bad idea. Anaheim has a lot of holes.

Just out of curiosity, what is everyone's obsession with trading our forwards at the deadline? Offense is not our problem. If we were going into the playoffs today, our 4th line is not what would ruin us. Our defense and goaltending is. Unless we're trading Filppula for a defenseman or some sort of goaltender (not a soon to be UFA tender. Kenny would have to be creative here), then theres no point in trading Filppula when you can trade him AFTER the playoffs, and add a gritty 4th liner with only moving a pick and still keeping Filppula.

For example, if all we're going to do is add a guy like Neil, then we don't need to move salary to do it and a 2nd round pick would likely suffice. And keeping Flip only makes us deeper in the playoffs. Then the Wings can take the entire summer to look for a "cap clearing" trade in which Filppula could be tossed in favor of something else.

The only way, in my eyes, that trading Filppula for a forward at the deadline makes sense is if the Wings are making a second trade that requires them to clear some cap space.

In regards to your ideas first, I'm not too thrilled about the idea of moving Samuelsson given his currently light contract and his production. While there's a decent chance the Wings will lose him this offseason, Sammy has shown he's a valuable piece of the Wings especially for a small investment. The way he steps up in the playoffs is something I think this team will also need given the target on theirs backs due to being the defending champs.

As for Filppula, I wouldn't mind seeing him moved for the right deal. While Kenny does so many things right, Filppula's deal tends to be mediocre and I'm not sure he's going to drastically improve over the life of his contract at this point. While Stewart would be a solid addition to the fourth line given how hard he plays and his tenacity on the ice, he doesn't bring to the table what Filppula can (given how different their respective roles are). Moving Filppula for Stewart and a 2nd would definitely be a hockey move simply because we gain a needed young, fourth line grinder with size and $2.5 million in cap space (Filppula's $3 million - Stewart's $522,500) for this offseason. This might be a decent deal if the Wings are then able to use not only their current remaining cap space but Filppula's to add another legitimate third liner at the deadline without giving up to many assets. That being said, the only problem with moving Filppula is that you lose an extremely defensively reliable third liner, and given the Wings' team defense woes this season, I'm sure not Filppula should be moved. My heads spinning.

Personally, I'd rather see the Wings add some 4th line grinding depth at the deadline than anything else. My hope is that adding guys to rejuvenate the fourth line will end up spreading energy and tenacity throughout the entire lineup in a ripple effect sort of way. The Wings' current fourth line is anything but tenacious and adding someone that sends the right message every time they're on the ice is something not to be undervalued. I look at what Drake brought to this team last year, and I think that's something *big* that our boys missing.
